Scott Hammond: Ladies and gentlemen, friends and neighbors, Hammond and the 100% Humboldt podcast with my new best friend, Toby

Scott Hammond: Tullis.

Toby Tullis: What's happening, Scott? How are you, sir?

Scott Hammond: Do you want Toby or Tobin?

Toby Tullis: Toby, please. Tobin's for if I'm in trouble.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: That's your, your mom's name.

Toby Tullis: Or, or if a new, a new client until I get to know them a

Scott Hammond: So who are you? What do you do? Why are you here?

Toby Tullis: Oh my gosh, right off the bat. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: What-

Toby Tullis: Who am I?

Scott Hammond: What do you want?

Toby Tullis: I was born a poor bla- No. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: I like to start all that off with the jerk.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: The beginning of the jerk.

Scott Hammond: Great.

Toby Tullis: I was born a poor Black child. That's the greatest, uh, intro scene ever.

Scott Hammond: Oh, Steve Martin.

Toby Tullis: Um, wonderful, and still holds water. Uh, what am I? I'll let you know when I figure it out. I can tell you what I do.

Scott Hammond: What's your day job?

Toby Tullis: Got two of them. I am currently the assistant program director and morning drive DJ of, uh, KHUM, uh, 104.3 or

Toby Tullis: 104.7.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. I'm Toby in the morning.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: I am also the owner/operator, um, of 6 Street Marketing, S-I-X-S-T-R, not sixth with a T-H. 6 Street Marketing is a digital marketing firm that I founded in 2020.

Scott Hammond: Right, right.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Tell me about that.

Toby Tullis: Little bit of something. Uh, started a digital marketing company in 2012 in the Bay with a good friend of mine.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, let me re- recant. The brother of a good friend of mine.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Toby Tullis: I figured it was far enough away that

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: … it wouldn't ruin Thanksgiving.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: You know, and that's exactly what happened,

Scott Hammond: As it does

Toby Tullis: … as it does.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. And then we caught fire, and it was wonderful, and I learned a lot, by fire, and then moved up here in 2018. He stayed in the Bay and was never gonna really understand commerce

Toby Tullis: Humboldt.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Toby Tullis: You can't unless you're kinda here, I think.

Scott Hammond: You gotta be here.

Toby Tullis: You… It's a… It is a bubble. Um,

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … there's seven in the rest of the world, when it comes to business. And so we weren't seeing eye to eye on I sold it out-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … um, to him, my half of it, no strings, just like, "Hey, and I'll do mine."

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And then-

Scott Hammond: Yeah. The seven degrees of, uh, Kevin Bacon, right?

Toby Tullis: That's really good stuff.

Scott Hammond: Is that a, actually a movie or what?

Toby Tullis: It's a board game.

Scott Hammond: It's a board game.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, that's what I hear. Yeah, it's a thing.

Scott Hammond: 'Cause it's a saying.

Toby Tullis: It's also a drinking game, I think.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: I think that… Yeah, if you can figure it out.

Scott Hammond: Ah.

Toby Tullis: But it's a board game.

Scott Hammond: But here it's two degrees.

Toby Tullis: It is two degrees.

Scott Hammond: So you know Patrick Cleary, so y- therefore, you're my friend.

Toby Tullis: I was just telling Nick about that before we started. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: That, that's how the radio thing can link up.

Scott Hammond: Wait, you know Pat? I know Pat. We're now f-

Toby Tullis: We are. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And we, we… You and I have known each other for a little

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … that same trajectory where our paths You gave me your book on parenthood-

Scott Hammond: That's right

Toby Tullis: … many, many years ago. I think I was here by like four months.

Scott Hammond: Oh, wait. Do you mean…

Toby Tullis: That's the one.

Scott Hammond: This one.

Toby Tullis: Dun, dun, dun. Oh, that's right. We're on camera.

Scott Hammond: Oh, that's right. Yeah.

Toby Tullis: [laughs] I'm so used to being in a radio booth.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Your fifth wall is right there, bro.

Toby Tullis: Oh my gosh. I shouldn't have… Uh, yeah, that's a wonderful read, and at a time where, um-

Scott Hammond: Thank you

Toby Tullis: … my family was budding. I think that we had the fourth one almost

Scott Hammond: Wow

Toby Tullis: … when I first got that book and read it right away.

Scott Hammond: Cool. Hopefully it, there's two ideas.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. That's great.

Toby Tullis: A couple. There are a couple of them.

Scott Hammond: So my last week's guest was Solomon Everta from Eureka Books. I was just there this afternoon, walked in.

Toby Tullis: He'll be in my sh- on my show next week.

Scott Hammond: Super sweet.

Toby Tullis: Great guy.

Scott Hammond: Amazing, smart guy. And so he, um… I saw him today. He goes, "Bring some books in." I go, "Well, there's…" [laughs] They're, they're all Amazon, uh, CreateSpace, which is a defunct company, but…

Toby Tullis: Oh, is it really?

Scott Hammond: Yeah, I have two.

Toby Tullis: My… I've, I've got a book. It's on Amazon as well, but-

Scott Hammond: Really?

Toby Tullis: … um, yeah, it's just normal.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. I'd love a copy of your book.

Toby Tullis: I would get one for you.

Scott Hammond: So you grew up in the Bay Area. Tell us about growing up, school, you get here and-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … what's, what's that? So you're East, you're East Bay,

Toby Tullis: East Bay. Uh, yeah, oh, absolutely. Diehard Oakland A's fan.

Scott Hammond: Oh, the Sacramento A's?

Toby Tullis: Having a really hard time letting it go.

Scott Hammond: The Las Vegas A's?

Toby Tullis: I am actually excited that they're wearing a Sacramento jersey

Toby Tullis: Um-

Scott Hammond: Oh, they are. They are

Toby Tullis: … they are. The-

Scott Hammond: The River Cats?

Toby Tullis: Yeah, fin- they're finally wearing it. Um, River… They s- you know, they sold the River Cats to the Giants

Scott Hammond: Oh, interesting.

Toby Tullis: More than that.

Scott Hammond: Was that the A's team?

Toby Tullis: Yeah, it was.

Scott Hammond: Oh, okay.

Toby Tullis: It was.

Scott Hammond: I've heard that they're-

Toby Tullis: Unless they're playing in that s- in that stadium.

Scott Hammond: I heard it's a fun game to go to there.

Toby Tullis: It is because it's a, it's a minor league ballpark. It's sad.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, yeah.

Toby Tullis: It's sad from an MLB perspective-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Toby Tullis: … but I went and watched them play the Yankees,

Toby Tullis: Judge.

Scott Hammond: That's cool.

Toby Tullis: You know, it was really fun to see Aaron Judge rip

Scott Hammond: Oh, I bet

Toby Tullis: … uh, in a tiny little ballpark.

Scott Hammond: Just rip, rip them out.

Toby Tullis: Oh, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: It was unbelievable.

Scott Hammond: He's great.

Toby Tullis: So, well-

Scott Hammond: But they beat them two out, two out, two out of three, right?

Toby Tullis: Two out of three this week.

Scott Hammond: Shoot, and they… And it turns out the Yankees swept the

Toby Tullis: Well, they… Oh, I, I s-

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: I've been seeing some stuff 'cause I don't go near the National League know, playoff time-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … and/or Interleague games. But I've been hearing, Giants are, hard time right now.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, I think so.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, and that's bad news.

Scott Hammond: Padres are, like, 500 ball, so whatever.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, that's take it or leave it.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: They got-

Scott Hammond: Hey, it's sports

Toby Tullis: … they had our Bob Melvin.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, right.

Toby Tullis: But then gave it to another-

Scott Hammond: So what part of the Bay Area and where'd you go to school?

Toby Tullis: Uh, Danville, California.

Scott Hammond: Uh-huh.

Toby Tullis: So East Bay Area, just right, we border up next to Walnut Creek,

Scott Hammond: Sure.

Toby Tullis: Born and raised, great place. Um-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … really developed. Became a town I didn't recognize.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Toby Tullis: Became a town that didn't… You know, it used to be that place that you got caught drinking with your buddies, you know, the cop would drive you home and knock on your door and say, "Sam, keep an eye on your kid"-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … kind of thing.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And then it just became a place that didn't care if I was there If the checkbook didn't match, then, you know-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … c'est la vie.

Scott Hammond: Huge growth.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. And then, you know, the family-

Scott Hammond: Hmm

Toby Tullis: … started getting bigger, and I started entrepreneurship. So at the beginning, you know, you don't have two wooden nickels to rub

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And so we ended up in the Central Valley, um, where it's a lot more affordable.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: In a little, little place called Patterson.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Ne- next to Patterson. It's, uh, Newman was the actual city.

Scott Hammond: Is that an Air Force base?

Toby Tullis: No, uh, all agricultural-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … uh, in between the Amazon Fulfillment Center

Scott Hammond: It's way out there, right? Yeah

Toby Tullis: … way… Like, I tell people it's right about the time on Disneyland that you stop paying attention.

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: You're just like, there's nothing to look at.

Scott Hammond: I know where that is.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so I'm just not gonna look anymore.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: That's Newman.

Scott Hammond: Wow, way out there.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. And then, and we do the just, uh, the freeway, "Not Newman."

Scott Hammond: Newman.

Toby Tullis: You know? [laughs] 'Cause that's how it was.

Scott Hammond: Love it.

Toby Tullis: 119 degrees, dusty and dry. Ugh. And so we w- uh, started coming here in 2012. Um, had our, my first son, my son, my firstborn is, uh, born in 2012.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Toby Tullis: And my wife's, ex-wife now, but my wife's best friend… moved up here a whi- quite some time ago in high school.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: And so they had babies at the same exact time.

Scott Hammond: So you met her down there?

Toby Tullis: Uh, no, my wife was Dublin. We-

Scott Hammond: Okay

Toby Tullis: … in the Bay Area, but her friend had moved away before I

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Toby Tullis: Um, and then they had their first babies at

Toby Tullis: we-

Scott Hammond: Hmm

Toby Tullis: … were motoring up here to visit them-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … um, and quickly, quickly fell in love with Humboldt.

Scott Hammond: Ah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: What's to like about Humboldt?

Toby Tullis: Well, first of all, her husband, um,

Scott Hammond: Oh, cool.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so we'd go out in kayaks in Trinidad every

Scott Hammond: Pull up those pots.

Toby Tullis: Sometimes November.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, one pot, one net when we can.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: I'm still very, very passionate about it. Then he taught me how to forage mushrooms, and that was-

Scott Hammond: Oh, that's cool

Toby Tullis: … the next level of forestry. I mean, I-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Toby Tullis: … I really wanted… We're… Like I said, our family budding. Um, I got four kids that are two years apart, and w- fe- feeble attempt, but we wanted to raise them as best we could outside as opposed to-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … behind a screen.

Scott Hammond: Sure.

Toby Tullis: And it's not possible 100%, it's just not.

Scott Hammond: Sure.

Toby Tullis: But this is, at least gives us a,

Scott Hammond: Taught him how to shroom. Taught, taught him how to crab.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Right, exactly. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Get your own food.

Toby Tullis: First thing I did when they were, what, three teach them how to clean.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You know, here's how you cook and clean a crab.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: You know, you can't go out and catch them yet 'cause there's not room

Scott Hammond: That's so disgusting.

Toby Tullis: It's so disgusting.

Scott Hammond: What do they call the crab in there?

Toby Tullis: But kids love it.

Scott Hammond: They call it the butter?

Toby Tullis: The butter, and it's anything but.

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Toby Tullis: It might look a little like it, but it's-

Scott Hammond: There's people that eat that stuff, right, or mix it with stuff?

Toby Tullis: Oh, yeah. No, they spread it on bread.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: I am not one of them.

Scott Hammond: No. I love seafood, but forget it.

Toby Tullis: I give away more crab than I eat.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Love crab, man. It's-

Toby Tullis: It's just versatile. It's so good.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And it's so abundant, and it, and it really got me in touch with the

Scott Hammond: I bet

Toby Tullis: … up here and out there, of which there wasn't anymore in the Bay.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: So, I mean, h- it's still home. Mom's still-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Toby Tullis: … in the Bay Area. Um, we go back every now and then, but-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … this is, this is where the roots-

Scott Hammond: Well, hey, welcome home.

Toby Tullis: I appreciate you.

Scott Hammond: Glad to have you.

Toby Tullis: That's exa- I appreciate that too.

Scott Hammond: Welcome to Humboldt.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, it's a good spot.

Scott Hammond: We're two degrees from knowing each other.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. [laughs] We sure are.

Scott Hammond: We're getting closer even. That's-

Toby Tullis: You and I are one and a half.

Scott Hammond: It's… [laughs]

Toby Tullis: We don't have to play the game very long before we're like, "Oh,

Scott Hammond: Oh, yeah.

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: No, he's my buddy. He's…

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Oh, we're like brothers.

Toby Tullis: It's like, "Do you know…?" It's like, "Oh, yeah, years." [laughs]

Scott Hammond: So what did you do… So when you got here, what'd you do for work? You were a bartender for a minute.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so I was… My first life is, uh,

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, I wrote myself a book and got myself out of

Scott Hammond: That's right, the Bourdain book.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, it- the Bourdain-esque kind of tell-all. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Is that the one book you just mentioned earlier,

Toby Tullis: Nope, that's it.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Toby Tullis: That's it. I'm, I, I'm one of those authors for the last 10 years.

Scott Hammond: Of course.

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Aren't we all?

Toby Tullis: I don't even say that out loud because it's so cliché.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, I, I, I'm writing it right now.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, I've got the idea. I got the framework. Uh, but yeah, uh, what seems to be the problem, it I was, I was venting everything that was driving me crazy every day about my, my job, because I wanted out. I didn't wanna be in the restaurant

Toby Tullis: anymore.

Scott Hammond: Up here or down there?

Toby Tullis: Down there.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And I was upper echelons. I was fine dining restaurant.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Toby Tullis: I was a three-piece suit every day and-

Scott Hammond: Where was that, Danville?

Toby Tullis: Yeah. Four different places I had a, um, private golf and country club in Livermore-

Scott Hammond: Nice

Toby Tullis: … in the wine, wine country.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I co-owned a bar and grill in San Francisco.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, in the financial district. That Then I went over to a Kobe beef steakhouse in Danville.

Scott Hammond: Sweet.

Toby Tullis: So that was really cool, and then I finally ended up at a Michelin um, rest- seafood restaurant in Walnut Creek.

Scott Hammond: A Mich- Michelin?

Toby Tullis: Michelin.

Scott Hammond: Michelin.

Toby Tullis: I don't like to equate it to the tire, It's like I can't [laughs] get co-

Scott Hammond: It's funny, yeah

Toby Tullis: … It's so weird.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, there's a two-star Mexican restaurant down today on the phone.

Toby Tullis: Oh, is it really?

Scott Hammond: It's M- two-star Michelin.

Toby Tullis: Michelin.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You're gonna say it now, I can't.

Scott Hammond: They have a chain now. They have two or three down there. So it's pr- pretty good, I guess.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, I just, I just can't stand the thought-

Scott Hammond: So-

Toby Tullis: … of a ti- a guy made out of tires bum-

Scott Hammond: Does it make any sense?

Toby Tullis: [laughs] It doesn't make any sense.

Scott Hammond: Same name. Yeah, it is the same name. So, do you… Came up here and then worked for Carter House, and then, uh-

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so at the time, I was keeping one hand

Toby Tullis: a-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … networking-

Scott Hammond: Yep

Toby Tullis: … um, opportunity. I knew that that was a great place to be

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I wasn't getting that kind of social feed at home, and so,

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … um, as a employee, not a manager.

Scott Hammond: Could you drink for free, or had you… Or were you so- sober then?

Toby Tullis: No, I was already sober by then.

Scott Hammond: You were?

Toby Tullis: Yeah, I was sober.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Like, I got sober in 2009. We moved up here in 2018.

Scott Hammond: So I would've met you, I think, after that.

Toby Tullis: Yes, uh, well, I mean-

Scott Hammond: At the Carter

Toby Tullis: … I met a lot of people at Carter House.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I think, I think I might have crossed paths with

Scott Hammond: You did

Toby Tullis: … there were so many movers

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Toby Tullis: And what a great place to-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … accidentally kinda get a, a, a job at because it opened me up to Chuck Leachman over at North Coast Journal.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, it got me to know a lot of people.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Uh, Brett Watson, um, ex-mayor of Arcata. You know, all of these people that were in the game at the time-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … moving and shaking, and so.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: It was good.

Scott Hammond: And then you met Chris and Bill at, at Brucci.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, then that… God, how'd that… Oh, that was right after. Yeah, I had left Carter House-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … and Bill Chino… I had applied for a job with Bill Chino.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And he had called me.

Scott Hammond: Hey, Bill, what's up?

Toby Tullis: Hi. Such a good dude.

Scott Hammond: He's on next week.

Toby Tullis: Is he really?

Scott Hammond: [laughs] That's-

Toby Tullis: He's got a lot to talk about.

Scott Hammond: I think it's next week or two, but yeah, he's s- he's scheduled.

Toby Tullis: The Plaza's back, baby.

Scott Hammond: The Plaza Grill.

Toby Tullis: That's awesome.

Scott Hammond: That's gonna be fun.

Toby Tullis: I'm pretty excited about that for, for him too.

Scott Hammond: Look at the me- look at the menu. I'm going, "Oh, it's not $1,000 to eat here."

Toby Tullis: The other thing, too, that I, I just read 10 minutes ago waiting in the for the kids, um, he's got OpenTable as a reservation his feet across not doing that for some long, so long, so.

Scott Hammond: It's a pretty big deal, right?

Toby Tullis: Yeah, it's a big deal.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so he gets to automate all of his stuff.

Scott Hammond: Oh, it'll make it so easy.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so he had called me up and said, idea for a Brucci's…" You know, Chris was not doing well. He was kind of removed from service, and then-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … um, his idea was the basement and would turn it into a should've been from the get-go. That place is custom-made to be a jazz

Scott Hammond: Oh, yeah.

Toby Tullis: He wanted it to be the stand-up basement, so base B-A-S-S, a fishing community. It's gonna look like the basement no

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: "So call it what it is." So I created-

Scott Hammond: We serve fish-

Toby Tullis: Yeah, exact-

Scott Hammond: … and jazz

Toby Tullis: … yeah. Yeah, we strum a fish, right?

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Da-dum-dum-dum-dum. It, it, it… Yeah, it's got Disney ramifications all over it.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: Uh, so I built them a website, built them a logo, um-

Scott Hammond: Cool

Toby Tullis: … and then got behind the bar

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And that, that opened up a ton of doors here.

Scott Hammond: Still rolling.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, that's how I met Patrick Cleary.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And I knew Patrick from being a folk artist.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Him and his wife Kat.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I got to know them on a, on a personal level.

Scott Hammond: Hi, Pat. Hi, Kat.

Toby Tullis: Good people.

Scott Hammond: Hey, so if you're just joining us,

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: … you've joined us already. But if you're just joining us, uh, Toby Tullis from, uh, KHUM Radio and, uh, and other things.

Toby Tullis: Other things.

Scott Hammond: So what, what'd you do after The Basement?

Toby Tullis: So did The Basement, and then COVID shut us down.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: You know, that we- before COVID even knew what the rules in and said, "We know you need to shut. You've got one window that opens. You got no food, you know, you're a bar only, so you close down out what, what this is all about."

Scott Hammond: What the rules are. [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Yeah. So that… Then that was fine. You know, that I've always had my, um, my digital marketing.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: That's, that's what I fall back on.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: That's my thing.

Scott Hammond: So are your accounts mostly Bay Area?

Toby Tullis: No, great question. I brought six clients with me, but I was really interested in trying to get embedded into the community and into the commerce community here in Humboldt.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Toby Tullis: And that worked out really well-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … by, by meeting some people. So it has since, I've got a couple-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … um, national clients that I-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … handle, but mostly it's local stuff.

Scott Hammond: Nice.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so I just build and maintain online presences for them. But, um, get to use that in ventures like Basement, where I get to build them a website and their social media-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Toby Tullis: … and all that stuff.

Scott Hammond: So you're kind of a renaissance man.

Toby Tullis: I'll do whatever you need me to do.

Scott Hammond: And now you're a radio guy.

Toby Tullis: I'm a hustler.

Scott Hammond: Now that's a, that's a grinder.

Toby Tullis: [laughs] I'm a grinder. I am a grinder.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, the grinding hustler.

Toby Tullis: Four kids.

Scott Hammond: Dude, that's what you have to do in Humboldt.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, uh, my, my, my, uh, the mom of the children, I still am uncomfortable what to call her. Ex is way too harsh, you know?

Scott Hammond: Ex is… This is just a movie line from last night.

Toby Tullis: It's, yeah.

Scott Hammond: We were watching, uh, Steve Carell's in a,

Scott Hammond: The Rooster.

Toby Tullis: Oh, I've heard about it and I haven't seen it.

Scott Hammond: He goes, "I don't wanna call her my ex. That sounds like she's dead."

Toby Tullis: Yeah, right.

Scott Hammond: Or that woman.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So there's gotta be a, a name.

Toby Tullis: And then the mother of my children makes it sound like we had a she gave me four kids.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: [laughs] So it's gotta be better-

Scott Hammond: There's gotta be a better-

Toby Tullis: There's gotta be some-

Scott Hammond: There's gotta be a better way

Toby Tullis: … I, I could do the whole, like, baby mama. Nah, I don't know, And we're very good co-parents, and so I respect her-

Scott Hammond: That's cool. Of course you would

Toby Tullis: … very much as a, as a mother. She's a great, great,

Scott Hammond: Is she in McKinleyville too, like you?

Toby Tullis: She is, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: We won't be very far apart from each other until these kids

Scott Hammond: Have I shown you where McKinleyville is on my prop map?

Toby Tullis: I, no.

Scott Hammond: It's right up there north of, uh, the Bay, the other bay, and it's, you go to Arcata then McKinleyville, uh… I don't, I don't, I can't say. Nick, who do you think they named it after?

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Oh, we're not supposed to go there.

Scott Hammond: Oh, well, he was McKinley-

Toby Tullis: It's President McKinley

Scott Hammond: … he's dead. He, he's not political anymore.

Toby Tullis: Well, I mean, he made this a spotlight

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: I appreciate you showing me how to get home.

Scott Hammond: Let's, yeah, just come up to 101, you'll be fine.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: The, the funny story is, um, did I read that he was in s- the statue was in storage for quite a while?

Toby Tullis: Oh, no kidding. You know what?

Scott Hammond: I think for a while.

Toby Tullis: You don't hear about that. What do they do with that stuff?

Scott Hammond: Maybe Nick would know that. Somebody's gotta know that. So it was, it was like they, they bought it, they hauled it, they… I think they stored it, if I remember.

Toby Tullis: See if they can figure out somewhere else to put it.

Scott Hammond: I'm not sure if it's up yet even. I,

Toby Tullis: It's, uh, it's up somewhere in Arkansas.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. It, it's in, uh, Ohio.

Toby Tullis: Oh, is it really?

Scott Hammond: Where he's from.

Toby Tullis: Oh, wow.

Scott Hammond: McKinleyville, Ohio. No, I'm kidding.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: He's wherever. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: I think he's Ohio. I-

Toby Tullis: I don't know

Scott Hammond: … um, I'll just tell-

Toby Tullis: Well, most of those guys came out of that,

Scott Hammond: … you know, if you say, if you, if you say it with confidence-

Toby Tullis: Yeah, exactly

Scott Hammond: … oh, he's from-

Toby Tullis: I believed you 100%.

Scott Hammond: He's in Columbus, Ohio.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: It's probably in a U-Haul storage shed down the street.

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: He's… [laughs] They thought they got it,

Toby Tullis: Yeah. They're at-

Scott Hammond: So, uh, so bartending and now DJing and now, uh… So you got sober. Let's, let's talk about sobriety.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And the, and the 12 steps and the program and the whole deal and-

Toby Tullis: I am into it.

Scott Hammond: Uh-

Toby Tullis: I'm really into it

Scott Hammond: … I know, you know, most alcoholics are, uh, I don't know yourself that, most people-

Toby Tullis: Oh, I most certainly will

Scott Hammond: … would say-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … "Hey, uh, this is me and this is my confession and this

Toby Tullis: Yeah, I fall into the camp of I don't believe truly help somebody else that's struggling by being anonymous at the same time, especially in a small community.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: So I, I don't try to hide the fact

Scott Hammond: Cool.

Toby Tullis: I'm also not in a place necessarily to be able to help the way I can connect people.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I'm just not in the program as much anymore because I'm so busy-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Toby Tullis: … doing other stuff.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Which arguably might have been the thing that took me out. So I got sober in 2009.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Diehard program guy.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: I mean, I, I found… I was alone.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I was a drinker that was alone.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: And I could not get out of my own way to see the forest through the trees, all of the cliches.

Scott Hammond: So diehard partier p- prior to that.

Toby Tullis: Just long-term.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: It's how I was raised. It's how I came up.

Toby Tullis: Um-

Scott Hammond: Dealt with the pain with-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … whatever, yeah.

Toby Tullis: I'm a 1970s born kid, so I was '80s. I was… You know, I'm the Stranger Things guy. I was riding around the neighborhood on the bike, and when the, the lights came home, it was time to go home. That was it.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: And Mom and Dad were a couple of martinis in at

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: So there was no checking-

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: … to see if I was okay.

Scott Hammond: Are you smoking weed now?

Toby Tullis: Uh, yeah. Well-

Scott Hammond: That's, maybe

Toby Tullis: … no, you smell funny. You don't smell-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … like your usual Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Scott Hammond: Is that a tomato plant, plant in your bedroom?

Toby Tullis: [laughs] Yeah, they knew better.

Scott Hammond: How did I know that one?

Toby Tullis: I, and my parents had to have been creative Brother's Andy, I'm Tobin, and then Joe and Carrie. So it's like, where'd they get the creative Tobin? I think it was a special brownie night for them.

Scott Hammond: Could've been.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: So yeah, so I, I, I found my tribe in

Toby Tullis: AA.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I had four DUIs.

Scott Hammond: Whoa.

Toby Tullis: I had been sent to AA plenty.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Toby Tullis: I have sat in a lot of meetings.

Scott Hammond: Holy smokes.

Toby Tullis: Never heard a thing except for how to get out of there.

Scott Hammond: Uh-huh.

Toby Tullis: And then, yeah, when I bottomed out, I mean, and it

Toby Tullis: was.

Scott Hammond: It's good. Most-

Toby Tullis: I don't wanna scare your-

Scott Hammond: Most good ones are.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. No, it was, it was movie worthy.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Uh, it, it wasn't. It was, it was mental.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: But, um, when I got through the crying part, my dad was the one that was just like, "Well, you went to AA for the judge. Why don't you call some of those people back up?"

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: For a different reason. Went in and heard a completely different immediately that I was home and that I was around a lot of

Toby Tullis: people-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … that were going to love me until I could

Toby Tullis: myself.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Toby Tullis: And they did

Scott Hammond: Wow

Toby Tullis: They did

Scott Hammond: Pretty honest.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Toby Tullis: It was epic. It was-

Scott Hammond: Really?

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: So, my, my journey parallels yours differently,

Scott Hammond: my dad. So my dad drank till I was, uh, 13. He got arrested, went down hit- ver- the very bottom of the downtown jail in

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Oh, there, yeah, that'll do it.

Scott Hammond: They took him to the bottom floor, metaphorically and maybe literally.

Toby Tullis: Oh, that's kinda cool that he can say that.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Arrested, threw his ass in jail.

Toby Tullis: Physically went to the bottom.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Started to go to meetings and, um, went to meetings till he died at 83 years old.

Scott Hammond: L-

Toby Tullis: Yeah, and I go when I can. I still, I'm very,

Toby Tullis: sense of-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … uh, I've got a text message thread with the the same individual.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: Um, I've brought a couple of newcomers in. Last week I brought a good friend in that's been dying to get help, and I just couldn't wait to get him in there.

Scott Hammond: Dude, that's wonderful.

Toby Tullis: Um, so yeah, I, I talk the talk.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: But I, I was introduced to a spiritual way

Toby Tullis: there.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Not religious-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … uh, but spiritual. I found-

Scott Hammond: Different

Toby Tullis: … I found Buddhism.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I found meditation. I found mindfulness.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: And that's something that I've, I've woven into my life.

Scott Hammond: Love it.

Toby Tullis: Because my divorce was tumultuous.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: It was traumatic. I didn't really see it coming.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, and it took me out for four months.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: So I medicated for four months. My disease, I program. I came up to here, I came up here and was like, next chapter, right? I don't need to go to AA-

Scott Hammond: Right

Toby Tullis: … a- anymore.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: And, and I don't blame it on not being plugged

Scott Hammond: It didn't help.

Toby Tullis: No.

Scott Hammond: So you were four months backslide, sliding-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … into the muck.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: In the mucky muck.

Toby Tullis: So I sla- I reset the clock two

Scott Hammond: Sweet.

Toby Tullis: October 10th, 2000 and, oh gosh, what is it, 26 now, so 23.

Scott Hammond: Atta boy.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Good job. Yeah. No, my dad loved, uh, they're freaking way more real.

Toby Tullis: Oh, I s- I sit those-

Scott Hammond: And he loved church. He loved his Baptist church in Oceanside-

Toby Tullis: No, I sit in those-

Scott Hammond: … California

Toby Tullis: … meetings all the time and I'm like, I don't care or not, everyone could use this.

Scott Hammond: Absolutely.

Toby Tullis: Every-

Scott Hammond: Oh, the 12 steps are for everybody.

Toby Tullis: It's, it's a dollar if, and if you don't have it, that's fine.

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Right.

Toby Tullis: You know? It's like so much cheaper than real

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: And everyone knows your struggles.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: They've been there.

Scott Hammond: So when I was 17, I had beautiful long locks with blonde streaks. I was all, I was that guy.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Voted most-

Toby Tullis: Like surfer dude?

Scott Hammond: Surfer dude. Most Beautiful hair in,

Toby Tullis: Get out of here.

Scott Hammond: Oh, voted. Oh, I, Nick, I was one gorgeous

Scott Hammond: mofo.

Toby Tullis: Is, you're still gorgeous, by the way.

Scott Hammond: Well, thank you. I appreciate that.

Toby Tullis: But isn't that God's sa- satire, to take the one thing-

Scott Hammond: Just-

Toby Tullis: … that got you on the map? [laughs]

Scott Hammond: It's all gone. The ki- the kids go, "What happened to you? You used to be cool." I go, "You guys, and then drugs."

Toby Tullis: Yeah, 100%, yeah.

Scott Hammond: And then, what'd you do to me?

Toby Tullis: My forehead grew. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Yeah, so I, this beautiful long hair, to all these meetings, North County San Diego.

Toby Tullis: Oh, so you, you saw it at a young age.

Scott Hammond: Oh, I saw it up close. Yeah, and I saw-

Toby Tullis: My kids see it

Scott Hammond: … I saw his spiritual transformation.

Toby Tullis: Sure.

Scott Hammond: And ha- spiritual. And saw him just become this new dude and this beautiful man and, uh, concurrent to that, I, I was having my own up here at Humboldt. And where do you go to get sober? Well,

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And, uh- [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Right. [laughs] The Emerald Triangle.

Scott Hammond: Home, home of the Emerald Triangle-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … and sobriety.

Toby Tullis: And California sobriety.

Scott Hammond: Found, met Joni, met Jesus, met sobriety and met a degree at Humboldt, and went back and presented my dad with this beautiful, you know, a whole month's worth of groceries r- brand-new Ryrie Study Bible. He goes, "Well, you know, I've, uh, I only read the King James." I go, what, let's cut the BS here."

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: "You don't own a Bible, bro."

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: "And just keep it." And so he goes, "Okay." And so, um, I gave him my gift, and he went back down to Camp Pendleton, was an insurance salesman. Oh, did you see Good Neighbor? He wasn't that, but he sold insurance to, to life, uh, to-

Toby Tullis: I'll be darned

Scott Hammond: … to Marines. And the, and here's where my story's going. So this, um, chaplain goes, "Hey, Bob, I heard you, you're really cussing that stupid Bible your son gave you, huh? This Ryrie S-" He goes, "I studied with Charles Ryrie at Dallas you would do well in reading that, Bobby."

Toby Tullis: Hmm.

Scott Hammond: See, so a Marine needs to hear it from another

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Not from the kid.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: With the beautiful locks.

Toby Tullis: That makes sense.

Scott Hammond: And, uh, it transformed him. That plus AA and Jesus was a spiritual, uh, spiritual transformation, bro.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. No, it's, uh, it's, and it's neat to have that awakening. Th- and, and that-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Toby Tullis: … a- and I find that you, just like anything else, gotta, you know. And it's, it's layers. You're never gonna get to the end of… You're never gonna figure it all out.

Scott Hammond: No.

Toby Tullis: You're not gonna be a professional.

Scott Hammond: No. There's, perfection is not part of this. And you know, the 12 steps are really, I, I'm, as I reexamine that and how Bill put that together, it's-

Toby Tullis: You know, it, it's, it, it's-

Scott Hammond: … transformational

Toby Tullis: … it is divine inter- intervention. It's the most purest form of divine interv- intervention.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: The fact that those came out of him in the '50s-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … and they still stand true

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … as they are-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … without ever being changed.

Scott Hammond: That's what truth does.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Sticks, sticks around.

Toby Tullis: It does.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. I'm broken. I need help.

Toby Tullis: Yep.

Scott Hammond: Let's start there.

Toby Tullis: You got 12 steps to put yourself back together, and they work.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And all you really have to do is surrender.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. And that's maybe the hardest part.

Toby Tullis: It is, most certainly the hardest part.

Scott Hammond: Let go, control freak.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. That's a hu- we wanna, we wanna be in control of everything.

Scott Hammond: Are you a control freak? Bet-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … maybe 12 steps could… You know. So I, I follow a guy named John Ortberg He's a, a pastor in Santa Barbara, and he, he just wrote a book on the 12 steps.

Toby Tullis: Oh, did he really?

Scott Hammond: Just how they apply to life and people.

Toby Tullis: Sh- they do. That's what I'm saying.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You don't have to have a drinking problem. Just go in

Scott Hammond: Hey, as long, as long as this is difficult,

Toby Tullis: Yeah. [laughs] Oh boy.

Scott Hammond: Um, so, so your divorce has, has continued to, to, to introduce brokenness into your life.

Toby Tullis: Sure.

Scott Hammond: That you have, uh, rebounded and had spiritual transformation is kinda, I'm getting a theme here, by the way.

Toby Tullis: Oh yeah?

Scott Hammond: I hope I'm getting it right. I, I think I'm tracking it.

Toby Tullis: No, I'm excited.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. So how did, um, how did that, that division work? H- how, how was that day, and how has that worked for you? What have you learned?

Toby Tullis: So I realized that I had put my spirituality on a shelfThat my, my spirituality came from AA even though it was separate from AA.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: When I was back then, I was, I was a part of, um, a Buddhist, um, sangha. You know, I had gone and done all of the things. I was-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … studying meditation on the side. In 2012, I went to seven different countries the year installing cloud-based technologies in-

Scott Hammond: Sweet

Toby Tullis: … developing countries, and Buddhism was a lot more readily Christianity.

Scott Hammond: Where was this at?

Toby Tullis: Oh, I was-

Scott Hammond: Asia?

Toby Tullis: Uh, I was, I started in Kenya.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: You know, and I did Vietnam, Pakistan, India, um, back to Africa.

Scott Hammond: Far out.

Toby Tullis: Pakistan. Oh, I said Pakistan. Anyhow.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Yeah, I went to a bunch of different places always temples. There was always Buddhist temples.

Scott Hammond: Sure.

Toby Tullis: And so I was turned onto it by then. Moved here in 2018, stopped going to meetings, kinda stopped spiritually-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … exploring. I became a dad and a business owner.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. You're busy.

Toby Tullis: And that's what got my attention.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And then on the, upon the relapse, uh, well, no, upon the divorce-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … upon finding out that it wasn't gonna work, um,

Toby Tullis: go.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And it wasn't necessarily AA right away. It was spirituality.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Toby Tullis: And so I got busy-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Toby Tullis: … on clearing chakras. I got cl- busy reading. I, I'm a study. I'm a big voracious reader.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And so I started studying and documenting it on social media-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … to kind of f- it was called, um, F Therapy.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm. F Ther- [laughs]

Toby Tullis: F Therapy, 'cause it's like I didn't need it. I didn't wa- I was gonna be my own therapist,

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: And I did, um, until I realized that it could've been hurtful to her

Toby Tullis: it down.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: But it got me to where I needed to be.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, and then took that on into put myself back together enough to be able to have what I would consider a viable product for the community.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: Where I could go out and start being the person

Scott Hammond: That's cool.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, and then AA helped put me back together

Scott Hammond: How about community? Was that part of that, other people?

Toby Tullis: Here it was.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, it was. It was n- and beyond the A- uh, beyond AA. It was, uh, knowing and understanding by the time that this community was special.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Toby Tullis: That this community really did-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Toby Tullis: … and does look after each other.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: I knew that kind of this is a special place for me.

Scott Hammond: Kinda rare, right?

Toby Tullis: Very rare.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Very rare.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: We are definitely in a bubble here.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Toby Tullis: And in it's a bubble that looks after their own.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And in the name of the zombie apocalypse, all we have to really do by the, the Avenue of the Giants [laughs] and, uh, Two posts, we're good.

Scott Hammond: And 299.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, yeah. Oh, that's right. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: We'll sh-

Toby Tullis: They can slip in tonight. Thank you.

Scott Hammond: We'll kill three bridges.

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Three bridges, we're good.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, we're okay. That's it. Now we're good.

Scott Hammond: They'll, they'll have to eat each other

Toby Tullis: And then on the work I'm doing, I'm, Made, and it's like, we're gonna be fine.

Scott Hammond: Cool.

Toby Tullis: You know, we're gonna be okay. So I d- I used spirituality to do that, and then the radio came along and really kind of serendipitously offered, um, a really, really cool platform-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Toby Tullis: … to explore spirituality to the nth.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And, and I have found, and I was always so worried. I'm like, "I've got five days a week. I've got this feature every morning at 7:30."

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And I was worried, "I'm gonna l-

Scott Hammond: What are we gonna talk about?

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: And I, I never have.

Scott Hammond: Spiritual transformation. Let's start there.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. [laughs] Right.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, we could go for that for a few months.

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Are you growing? Are you-

Toby Tullis: Yeah. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Are you, are you moving on? Are you mature?

Toby Tullis: Oh, today was a big question. Today I asked the question is,

Toby Tullis: choice?

Scott Hammond: Ooh. Hmm.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, that was the one I explored today.

Scott Hammond: Hmm. I think of joy, the word joy. Is joy a choice?

Toby Tullis: Yeah, sure.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I believe that.

Scott Hammond: I believe-

Toby Tullis: I'm a firm believer that happiness is a choice in the sense

Toby Tullis: very purposeful things-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … to bring yourself closer to happiness

Scott Hammond: Amen. I think it's, it's a yes and question.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, I think so.

Scott Hammond: It's both.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, absolutely. There's, there's science on the side of no.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You know, environmental, all of that stuff.

Scott Hammond: So what do you-

Toby Tullis: Chemical

Scott Hammond: … what do you wanna talk about?

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: What'd you come in, in… Anything that you wanted to-

Toby Tullis: [sighs]

Scott Hammond: … like, uh, uh, you wanna promote the station?

Scott Hammond: I-

Toby Tullis: I can do that

Scott Hammond: … sho- shout-outs? I mean-

Toby Tullis: Well, I'm excited about the ra- I mean, I was, 15 years old when I realized I wanted to be a DJ.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Little show called Northern Exposure. You remember it?

Scott Hammond: Yeah. I don't think I watched. I know of it.

Toby Tullis: Oh, it's the best.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: So, you know, so-

Scott Hammond: Is that the one that's, it's, it's kind of a satire. It's up in, in-

Toby Tullis: In Sicily, Alaska

Scott Hammond: … Alaska.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, it's satire. It, it's actually filmed in-

Scott Hammond: Especially Sicily

Toby Tullis: … Roslyn, Washington.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: So they didn't change the mural on the side of the cafe They just named the founder of Sicily Roslyn and Sicily.

Scott Hammond: That's funny.

Toby Tullis: They were the first ever lesbians in, in, you know, whatever.

Scott Hammond: On TV.

Toby Tullis: There was a DJ right on the main street. His booth looked out on this little tiny main street-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … and he would, you know, pontificate about life and-

Scott Hammond: Ah

Toby Tullis: … ruminate about the people that he saw. He was an observationist, and he was p- a, a flawed human being that was put back together again. He had done jail time.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Toby Tullis: But he was reformed as an intellect.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: He got into philosophy, he got into spirituality, his mouth was worth listening to.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: His name was Chris. He was played by-

Scott Hammond: Who's the actor?

Toby Tullis: Um, oh, gosh.

Toby Tullis: Uh-

Scott Hammond: Nick, Nick's-

Toby Tullis: He's, he, he's made famous on-

Scott Hammond: Nick's got it

Toby Tullis: … Sex in the City.

Scott Hammond: He'll tell us in a second.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, Nick, if you could find out what…

Toby Tullis: Oh, I'm not-

Scott Hammond: How many seasons-

Toby Tullis: Josh Cor- Corbin. Cor- Josh Corbin? Corbin. Steve Corbin?

Scott Hammond: Corbin Dallas. Steve Corbin.

Toby Tullis: Is it Corb- It's Corbin.

Scott Hammond: Anyway.

Toby Tullis: Anyhow.

Scott Hammond: How many seasons of Northern Exposure?

Toby Tullis: God, a lot. They just released it on Amazon. I think they had, like, 15 seasons or something like that.

Scott Hammond: Man, that's a run.

Toby Tullis: It was on for a long time.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I used to carry the paper rou- the paperback book in my pocket, Catcher in the Rye-

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: … of a book written in Chris in the Morning.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, written in his character's voice.

Scott Hammond: So that kind of started your vision to be-

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And there, there you are at KM.

Toby Tullis: When I was at 20, when I was 20 years old, I've, I heard the song, Root's Send Me On My Way.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Toby Tullis: My very first thought of that was, "If I ever do become a DJ, first song that I play."

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I knew very well I could not walk into a radio station in the Bay Area and be like, "Have I ever told you I'd wanna be a DJ?"

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: You know?

Scott Hammond: Folks.

Toby Tullis: Security, right?

Scott Hammond: Quickly.

Toby Tullis: Over here. Get him out of here.

Scott Hammond: Who is this homeless man?

Toby Tullis: But Humboldt

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: You know?

Scott Hammond: Come on in.

Toby Tullis: It's kind of who you know.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so I was sitting at, at the next booth over from, um, Kat and Patrick there, having their dinner over at M-

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: And, um, and I stopped by his table to say hello-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … as, as you do in Humboldt often. You don't get out of a-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Toby Tullis: … a, any restaurant here [laughs] without

Scott Hammond: No, you can't leave

Toby Tullis: … or goodbye to six people.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, yeah.

Toby Tullis: And I said, "How's the, the, the, uh, move going?"

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Toby Tullis: It was only a year and a half ago. He

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: So it was-

Scott Hammond: So you're that fresh at this.

Toby Tullis: Oh, very.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Toby Tullis: So the, uh, Lost Coast Outpost, which

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … that was in Old Town.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: And all four radio stations were in Ferndale.

Scott Hammond: Still in Ferndale, in the barn, yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so they brought them together for the the Carpenter Building.

Scott Hammond: So did you ever work in Ferndale?

Toby Tullis: No, no.

Scott Hammond: I mean, at that station.

Toby Tullis: I went there when I was running the basement.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, Larry, of 94.1, also the program director for

Toby Tullis: KHUM-

Scott Hammond: Right

Toby Tullis: … um, he had a cocktail hour, still does.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And so I was his guest every Friday. I would… He kept saying, "You can call in."

Scott Hammond: Uh-huh.

Toby Tullis: And I'm like, "Oh, no, I'm driving.

Toby Tullis: I-"

Scott Hammond: Not drive over.

Toby Tullis: "This is as close to radio as I've ever gotten."

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Which isn't entirely true. I sold radio in Reno for a little bit,

Toby Tullis: completely-

Scott Hammond: So did I, in Arcata.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. Yeah, I went to Re-

Scott Hammond: KATA, KFMI

Toby Tullis: … followed a girl up to Reno

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Toby Tullis: They wouldn't let me in. It was funny too, I I was a sales executive. We weren't allowed to go anywhere near the

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Toby Tullis: We weren't allowed to go in the radio booths.

Scott Hammond: Oh, wow.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Peter, Peter Wolf.

Toby Tullis: We weren't allowed to look at them.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, it was weird.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Toby Tullis: Like my, my booth's open all the time.

Scott Hammond: That's weird.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so I stopped by Patrick's table wanted to be in radio?"

Scott Hammond: Sure.

Toby Tullis: And he's like, "Call my guy." So I got the, uh-

Scott Hammond: It-

Toby Tullis: … got to meet Roger.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: So me and Roger sat down in-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … in the just putting, being put together studios.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Oh-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … your facility's magnificent.

Toby Tullis: Oh, it's so beautiful.

Scott Hammond: You guys rock it, yes.

Toby Tullis: State of the art.

Scott Hammond: So nice.

Toby Tullis: And getting better as soon as we get that band room up and running.

Scott Hammond: Oh, it's gonna be fun.

Toby Tullis: It's gonna be unbelievable.

Scott Hammond: You gonna do, like, tiny desk concerts?

Toby Tullis: Yeah, but it's bigger. I mean, it's a big spot.

Scott Hammond: So you could do a little show.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, we'd need to wire it. Um, We've had 12, 12 people bands in there.

Scott Hammond: Really? Okay.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, and then put them live to the radio and-

Scott Hammond: And there's enough guys that come through Troubadour, people

Toby Tullis: Oh, we… That's what we need. We need the people that Bay to Oregon to stop.

Scott Hammond: Did you see that Frank Zappa band? They were great.

Toby Tullis: I did not.

Scott Hammond: Oh, they were… [laughs] They played complex music.

Toby Tullis: Really?

Scott Hammond: Oh, Frank would've been proud.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, we… The music scene up here is beautiful.

Scott Hammond: Oh, there's so many guy- I mean, my friend Dave Turner, goes, "Oh, you know, this next week at The Steeple in Ferndale,

Scott Hammond: this week-

Toby Tullis: Great venue

Scott Hammond: … uh," Oh, really great, yeah. Had Paul. Hey, Paul.

Scott Hammond: Um, yeah, you guys did a killer job there.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, it's really cool.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so as I met with Roger, ran into Larry about two months later. Uh, he was doing a live, um, show from Eureka Natural Foods for the Food for People week.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And I said, "You know, I never heard from Roger." And he said,

Toby Tullis: air check?"

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And I had no idea what that was.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: So as I look at him, he's like, "It's-"

Scott Hammond: Sure

Toby Tullis: …"play 20 seconds of a song-

Scott Hammond: Uh-huh

Toby Tullis: … talk your way out of it, s- talk your way into the 20 seconds of the

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: "Send, send the recording in."

Scott Hammond: Huh.

Toby Tullis: So I did that, got an interview.

Scott Hammond: Cool.

Toby Tullis: Happened to be with Larry-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … who, the, the one person I had history with-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … 'cause I was down in Ferndale every Friday doing my

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And, uh, the rest is history. They brought three of us on right away. They were rebranding KHUM at the time.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: So it was myself, Jordan, and, um, Kiana-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … who goes by The Lizard Queen.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, she left in pretty rapid succession. So it was 6:00 AM to 10:00, and then a 10:00 to 2:00 and a 2:00 to 6:00 for the three of us.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Toby Tullis: She left to go run KM Hot Air.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Toby Tullis: Or not KM Hot Air, Humboldt Hot Air.

Scott Hammond: Humboldt Hot Air.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. Great outfit.

Scott Hammond: What's that up in, Arcata?

Toby Tullis: Arcata.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Just got accredited by the FCC.

Scott Hammond: Right, right. Okay.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, awesome outfit.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: She got a, a, an opportunity to be a program director.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: So instead of replacing her, Jordan and I were like, "We'll take… We'll split it right down the middle." I'm, so now-

Scott Hammond: Perfect

Toby Tullis: … I'm 6:00 to noon and he's noon to 6:00.

Scott Hammond: So you're morning drive.

Toby Tullis: I'm morning drive.

Scott Hammond: Cool.

Toby Tullis: And then a couple of months ago, um, Larry has been the program director for both 94.1 and, and KHUM.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: They were tiring of it, so they put it out,

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … for a program director.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And I-

Scott Hammond: [clears throat]

Toby Tullis: … they knew not better than to ask me.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I own my own digital marketing company and I'm already here six hours a

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: Don't, don't go near, near Toby. Whatever you do-

Scott Hammond: He's busy

Toby Tullis: … he's fine.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: And I made the convers- conversational comment, work," and that was it.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Like I got approached by like-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Toby Tullis: … four people that were like, "Hey, you should apply."

Scott Hammond: Hey.

Toby Tullis: And so-

Scott Hammond: Did you get it?

Toby Tullis: I did. I did.

Scott Hammond: Nice.

Toby Tullis: I'm the assistant program director. I'm learning from Larry right now-

Scott Hammond: Congrats

Toby Tullis: … because I'm so fresh, I shouldn't be-

Scott Hammond: So you're an apprentice.

Toby Tullis: I'm an apprentice.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I'm Larry's apprentice. Oh, that makes… I love that.

Scott Hammond: Uh, uh, you are an apprentice. Uh-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … we, we're all apprenticing under something-

Toby Tullis: Yeah, we are

Scott Hammond: … or someone.

Toby Tullis: Amen.

Scott Hammond: You gotta serve somebody, Bob Dylan.

Toby Tullis: You gotta serve somebody.

Scott Hammond: Bob said it well. Bob-

Toby Tullis: That is epic

Scott Hammond: … Zimmerman. So let, let's make a segue, that are really key for, that are about you.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Single dad stuff.

Toby Tullis: Yep.

Scott Hammond: Uh, the spirituality show on Friday, and a third thing that, that I'll surprise you with. But before we do that, it's the quiz.

Toby Tullis: Oh. I don't know enough about the quiz.

Scott Hammond: Where you can win fabulous prizes. If you're just joining us, this is my friend Toby Tullis from KHUM and The Bay, and he's an A's fan and, uh, well, just stick around

Scott Hammond: Um, question number one.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: What's the toughest thing that you ever had to go through,

Scott Hammond: from it?

Toby Tullis: I mean, I would… Alcoholism is probably the toughest thing-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Toby Tullis: … big picture-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Toby Tullis: … that I've ever had to go through.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, because we've touched base on that, my father at an early age.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Toby Tullis: Died when he was 63.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: Absolutely the patriarch of the family.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Toby Tullis: Held u- held us all together. It was a big loss.

Scott Hammond: That's tough.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so that one was, that was a doozy.

Toby Tullis: So-

Scott Hammond: What'd you, what'd you gain from those experiences?

Toby Tullis: My father didn't have much to give us in the way of monetary gains, uh, when he left, but he left u- left us with two things that are much more valuable. He left me with my, my quick wit.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I have utilized that every chance the, um, a playbook on how to be a dad.

Scott Hammond: Nice.

Toby Tullis: And I use that-

Scott Hammond: Ooh

Toby Tullis: … every single day.

Scott Hammond: That's huge, dude.

Toby Tullis: Huge. Uh-

Scott Hammond: Love that

Toby Tullis: … yeah, I would rather have

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, and that's what he left us. That

Toby Tullis: And-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … and because of that, I, I do believe, um, in… that he's got the best seat in the house-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … to watch it all.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You know?

Scott Hammond: You and I are on a similar path. Yeah, my dad, he died fairly broke, he was very rich.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, oh yeah.

Scott Hammond: He was extremely wealthy man.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, they had to set up fold-out ch-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Toby Tullis: … fold-up chairs outside the,

Scott Hammond: That's sweet

Toby Tullis: … the, the, the overflow.

Scott Hammond: Oh, that's, it, that's-

Toby Tullis: That's all that, that's what matters

Scott Hammond: … life, life well lived.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Question number two. What's, uh, what's life giving for you? What fills up your bucket?

Toby Tullis: The radio really does fill up my bucket.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I, I, I, I tongue in cheek say that the, the digital marketing keeps the lights on in the house.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And the radio keeps the lights on in my soul.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Like, it's something that I've wanted to do for so long, to be a voice in the community that I've come to love-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … so very much-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … uh, that is not wasted on me. So currently, mean, who else jumps out of bed at 4:30 in the

Scott Hammond: Just you.

Toby Tullis: No, no one should.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You know? And I, I literally am.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Like, woo-hoo.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Let's, let's go.

Scott Hammond: Let's do this thing.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. It's-

Scott Hammond: You and Ferndale Farmers.

Toby Tullis: That's it. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Actually, they're up at 3:00.

Toby Tullis: The four people that I talk to at 6:00 in the morning.

Scott Hammond: Right. [laughs]

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Hey.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: I'm just having my coffee.

Toby Tullis: I could probably call them off and just be like, "What's going on, Ethan? How are you, Joe O'Connell? What's for breakfast today?"

Scott Hammond: All, all the early guys.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, that's it. That's it.

Scott Hammond: Oh, man. That's funny.

Toby Tullis: But no, the, the radio is definitely keeping the lights on for internally. I mean, I-

Scott Hammond: That's really cool

Toby Tullis: … I'm excited about it still. waned at all.

Scott Hammond: Find something you love, and you'll never have to work another day.

Toby Tullis: That's it. It's true.

Scott Hammond: It's really true.

Toby Tullis: Damn it, they've been saying that for so long,

Scott Hammond: Is that what you're saying?

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Oh, yeah.

Toby Tullis: No, I've just been… I've heard that forever,

Toby Tullis: now.

Scott Hammond: Oh, now you don't have to work. It's great.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, no.

Toby Tullis: Well, it's a good thing that I, you know, the radio, get wealthy doing it. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: No. As my dad said, "If you're in it for the money,

Toby Tullis: Yeah. I'm-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … I figure I'm gonna follow you, whole bunch of friends so my friends, my pic- my kids one day could say,

Toby Tullis: broke."

Scott Hammond: He wasn't broke.

Toby Tullis: "He had a lot of friends." [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Imagine. Where is it? What movie is that? He was a wealthy man that dies with a bunch of friends. We'll come back to that one. That's a kill, killer line in the movie.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Hey, question number three.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: I gotta get my bell to work. Question number three, Toby,

Toby Tullis: Ooh.

Scott Hammond: Actually, for a book that you're gonna…

Toby Tullis: Oh, yeah?

Scott Hammond: Oh, uh, I got some special prizes.

Toby Tullis: I, I would, yeah.

Scott Hammond: I rounded up the most killer group of prizes for you today. Usually it'd be a Dick Taylor chocolate bar, but… And we love those guys, but-

Toby Tullis: Good people

Scott Hammond: … well, it's got-

Toby Tullis: I can see, uh, you're, you're, you're lit up right now.

Scott Hammond: Well, you haven't won-

Toby Tullis: I'm excited to be a recipient

Scott Hammond: … you haven't, you haven't won this yet.

Toby Tullis: I know. You're right.

Scott Hammond: Still, it's close.

Toby Tullis: You're right.

Scott Hammond: It's close.

Toby Tullis: No, no counting chickens.

Scott Hammond: This could go either way. Um, what's your ideal day? If you had, if… So, uh, you got 12 hours to do whatever. F- no money. Well, no money. No, money's not the object. What would you do with your day get up and go, and hey, Pat calls it, calls it in when you're done here.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: "Hey, take tomorrow off, and here's the checkbook."

Toby Tullis: That's super rad.

Scott Hammond: "Here's the card."

Toby Tullis: That's super rad.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And I think that I think about this every now always come back to, um, I would meditate in the morning. That's a way to, that-

Scott Hammond: What's that look like for you?

Toby Tullis: … that every day should start.

Scott Hammond: Do you, do you have a hot tub? Do you sit outside?

Toby Tullis: No. You know what's crazy is I've got one of those Shakti mats. That's where-

Scott Hammond: Is there clothing involved? [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Yeah. Yeah, it's optional on a Shakti.

Scott Hammond: A Shak-

Toby Tullis: I mean, yeah, sh- shirtless. I'm shirtless, even envision that whatsoever.

Scott Hammond: Hey, man.

Toby Tullis: I've got… Us radio guys like to admit

Scott Hammond: Yeah, you have a great face for radio.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, for ra- perfect face for radio.

Scott Hammond: My wife says everybody's naked under their clothes, so whatever.

Toby Tullis: They, they sure are.

Scott Hammond: We get it.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: It's like-

Toby Tullis: Picture everyone in their underwear

Scott Hammond: … there's nudity in America?

Toby Tullis: So a Shakti mat is about a three-foot by two-foot s- rectangle mat that is full of what are essentially golf spikes,

Toby Tullis: golf spikes.

Scott Hammond: Oh, that, yeah, I love that.

Toby Tullis: So it, it emulates-

Scott Hammond: My daughter has one

Toby Tullis: … sleeping on a, a bed of nails, right?

Scott Hammond: Oh, that thing hurts like a mofo.

Toby Tullis: For the first couple of minutes, it sure does.

Scott Hammond: Oh, circulation.

Toby Tullis: And then, uh, I mean, what happens is your back says, sends every part of your red bloods, blood, blood cells to the injury site, and they're looking around like, "There's nothing wrong here."

Scott Hammond: Have you ever got a cut from it?

Toby Tullis: No, no, no. It doesn't puncture skin at all.

Scott Hammond: Ever?

Toby Tullis: Ever. Not once.

Scott Hammond: Just because the engineering of the plastic-

Toby Tullis: My kids are actually into it.

Scott Hammond: Oh, d- do you stand on it too?

Toby Tullis: I have. That's hard, 'cause that's a whole bunch-

Scott Hammond: Dude

Toby Tullis: … of weight on top of it.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Toby Tullis: You're dispersed when you're on your back. But I have found that-

Scott Hammond: I can feel it right now

Toby Tullis: … that is my… That's my gateway to talk to my higher

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: My higher power is-

Scott Hammond: So you lay on your back on this?

Toby Tullis: Yeah. And then I've got a pillow,

Scott Hammond: Really?

Toby Tullis: So I'm poking the back of my neck and my bald head-

Scott Hammond: Okay

Toby Tullis: … with these things.

Scott Hammond: You're bald?

Toby Tullis: Indeed.

Scott Hammond: Yes, you are.

Toby Tullis: And then, um, that allows me to put myself on this quite literal meditative path. I, I, I'm a visual meditator, and so-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … I go down this path. It's a path in Africa,

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I've got binaural music going on.

Scott Hammond: Love it.

Toby Tullis: And eventually, when it, the calling comes, I go to an open field, where I connect with an energy that is-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … faceless, nameless.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: Um, she has a matronly, motherly voice.

Scott Hammond: Nice.

Toby Tullis: And I'm able to ask anything that I need to ask.

Scott Hammond: You know, the Holy Spirit, she's amazing.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. She knows what… She knows me.

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: I, yeah. And does God, does the higher power, does God, gender? I don't think so.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: We're all about gender.

Toby Tullis: So, so I meditate first. Coffee's definitely a part of the thing. I think I'd go golfing.

Scott Hammond: Did you say coffee?

Toby Tullis: Coffee's a part of the thing.

Scott Hammond: Oh, it is part of that.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Okay, good.

Toby Tullis: Oh, absolutely. Part, coffee's a part of everything.

Scott Hammond: Have you ever had Philz Coffee from the Bay Area?

Toby Tullis: P-H-I-L-Z.

Scott Hammond: My man.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. I was, uh, lived, worked in Cupertino for a while.

Scott Hammond: Now, that's… I've been drinking that for a week.

Toby Tullis: I'd go, I would go as far as to say Philz Coffee.

Scott Hammond: The whole town?

Toby Tullis: Oh, God, that's where the best ideas come from. They're like-

Scott Hammond: Google

Toby Tullis: … "I got an idea. It's called Apple." [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Google. Google.

Toby Tullis: Philz, Philz, Philz, Philz. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Oh my gosh.

Toby Tullis: Good stuff. Very good stuff.

Scott Hammond: Amazing. Every, every cup, every cup madeLike a pour over

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Anyway, so sorry. It's y- back to your day.

Toby Tullis: Uh, Blue- Blue Bottle, if you ever get a chance to,

Toby Tullis: good coffee-

Scott Hammond: I heard that's great

Toby Tullis: … out of, out of Oakland. Um-

Scott Hammond: Is that the… Do they serve that at Brio?

Toby Tullis: They might. I don't know. I've never seen it up here, I don't think.

Scott Hammond: It's Blue something. Um, sorry, I'm,

Toby Tullis: That's all right. I, uh, I would golf. Uh, golf has always been-

Scott Hammond: Really?

Toby Tullis: I don't do it enough anymore, but it's always been a part of my-

Scott Hammond: Me neither

Toby Tullis: … my peace and my zen.

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Toby Tullis: I love misplacing four hours on a golf course.

Scott Hammond: It's good. It's what time's for.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, it's good stuff.

Scott Hammond: Where do you play?

Toby Tullis: Up here, I do Beau Pre.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: I, I think it's a great course.

Scott Hammond: I bet Patrick could get us on Baywood.

Toby Tullis: I've never played Baywood.

Scott Hammond: Dang, son. You gotta go. Let's go.

Toby Tullis: I think about it all the time.

Scott Hammond: I'll get you on. You and me.

Toby Tullis: Please. Please. I, that, that would be epic. Um, I would barbecue something myself at

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … um, for like dinner.

Scott Hammond: It'd be like-

Toby Tullis: Uh, ribs are probably my favorite thing to

Scott Hammond: Wow

Toby Tullis: … although they're labor-intensive.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: That's why.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: They've got the biggest reward, but I think I'd do that. The burgers always go over well with the kids.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You know, but I think I'd do a big old plate of

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: You know?

Scott Hammond: That sounds good.

Toby Tullis: And then some outdoor dining if the weather

Toby Tullis: appreciates.

Scott Hammond: The five nights a week, a year we could do that.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: [laughs] Yeah, if it happens on s- last Saturday.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: If it happens on last Saturday, then I'm good to go.

Scott Hammond: We just went to Sacramento, and every night was just 70

Scott Hammond: outside.

Toby Tullis: My, my, my friend, my childhood friend, kick the tires on Humboldt to see if it's a place to put down roots last

Scott Hammond: [clears throat]

Toby Tullis: Last weekend.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You know, where Humboldt truly showed off.

Scott Hammond: Ah.

Toby Tullis: We were at the beach both days.

Scott Hammond: Oh, yeah.

Toby Tullis: And I'm telling him the whole time, I'm like,

Scott Hammond: No.

Toby Tullis: "Don't buy yet."

Scott Hammond: Don't do this.

Toby Tullis: "Come back another weekend so you can see what it's like."

Toby Tullis: Um, and time with my kids. Uh, I would absolutely spend time with my know. And in fact, I would love to be out on the golf course

Scott Hammond: Great.

Toby Tullis: That would be-

Scott Hammond: Oh, that'd be fun

Toby Tullis: … everything.

Scott Hammond: Kids love golf courses.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. I'm a big time camper. I love to be outside.

Scott Hammond: Nice.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, so I'd probably take… I've got a pop-up that fits all of… It would never fit the-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … X.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: So it worked out perfect.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: So I've got a little pop-up trailer that I take the kids on.

Scott Hammond: All right, bonus question.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: [bell dings]

Scott Hammond: Are you ready?

Toby Tullis: I think.

Scott Hammond: Where do you go to eat? So Pat gives you the credit card and says,

Scott Hammond: he just-

Toby Tullis: This one, this-

Scott Hammond: … anywhere you wanna go

Toby Tullis: … well, I mean, within the county.

Scott Hammond: County. You gotta be… Well, you gotta stay in the map.

Toby Tullis: This one's easy.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I, I've got this one in spades.

Scott Hammond: Go.

Toby Tullis: Papa, Papa Wheelie's.

Scott Hammond: Papa Wheelie's?

Toby Tullis: Papa Wheelie's.

Scott Hammond: Oh, Scotty boy.

Toby Tullis: Scotty is my man.

Scott Hammond: He's a great guy.

Toby Tullis: And I, and I will do anything I hope he's around until my kids can understand exactly-

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Toby Tullis: They know. They've all been. I try to go-

Scott Hammond: Did you go to his big anniversary-

Toby Tullis: … once a week or so

Scott Hammond: … where it was outdoor?

Toby Tullis: I didn't. I was, I, I had the kids that weekend, and, and no,

Scott Hammond: I heard his bur-

Toby Tullis: … kinda keep them out of beers

Scott Hammond: … his burgers are outstanding.

Toby Tullis: They're unbelievable.

Scott Hammond: Really?

Toby Tullis: They're unbelie- Everything's locally sourced.

Scott Hammond: Does he coa- cook? Does-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … he, he does it himself?

Toby Tullis: He does. He's got a guy there, Justice,

Toby Tullis: week.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: But, you know, s- Friday, Saturday, Scotty's back there.

Scott Hammond: He's even in the price point, too. He's not crazy money, right?

Toby Tullis: No, it's, it's, it's on the, the higher end, but not, not too,

Toby Tullis: all.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Yeah.

Toby Tullis: But you get what you pay for. You're getting wholesome ingredient.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: You're getting locally sourced.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: You're getting, you know, all the personality that-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Toby Tullis: … TGI Fridays wants to be.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: You know?

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: But it's real there.

Scott Hammond: [laughs] It's-

Toby Tullis: You know, the abnormal angles

Scott Hammond: Everything.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Kids asking, "Can I get some of these jelly beans?" I'm that thing since 1960."

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: "I doubt very highly anything that's a dime is worth eating, and no-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … you can't. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Right.

Toby Tullis: You can't. Let's get some fries."

Scott Hammond: Remember the movie house that had the hot dogs

Toby Tullis: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: No, no, it's been there since 1912.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. No, you don't wanna do that.

Scott Hammond: No, it's, it's something else now. It's living.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. Pa- Papa Wheelie's is something that I throw out often on the I, I, I… It's like that double-edged sword. I don't want him to become so busy that I get squeezed out, but I-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … oh, I want him to be there forever.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, he's a good dude. He's very-

Scott Hammond: It's funny how, how, um, different things come along your path, come along our path many times, including this time. So, hey, because you're amazing, uh, a can of really nasty zero sugar 7 Up Cherry

Scott Hammond: Soda.

Toby Tullis: Oh, because 7 Up needs zero sugar. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: It does, yeah, 'cause I want you to have that.

Toby Tullis: Why, thank you, sir.

Scott Hammond: But the real gift is, um, Andrew Murray was a, uh, was a Scotsman that was educated in, uh, Edinburgh, Scotland, and wrote 200 books, and this is super spiritual. Abide in Christ.

Toby Tullis: Ooh.

Scott Hammond: It's his classic. He was a teacher. He wrote 200 books. And this one, uh, you might get a chapter a week. It's that deep. It's just wonderful-

Toby Tullis: Fantastic. It's a thinking book

Scott Hammond: … for your meditation time.

Toby Tullis: Fantastic. I appreciate you. Anytime anyone hands you literature, thing as good friends show you new music.

Scott Hammond: I'm gonna sh- I'm gonna sign it when we're done.

Toby Tullis: Good.

Scott Hammond: I didn't, I didn't, I didn't author it, but it's killer.

Toby Tullis: I appreciate this very much.

Scott Hammond: I'm giving out, giving out dozens of these. They're great.

Toby Tullis: I'll be sure and do these at separate times so with the other.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm. Come, it's, it's, it's… So it's, it's all about John 15: abide-

Toby Tullis: Mm

Scott Hammond: … in the vine. Come, come and now rest.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And that's where we don't get it. We wanna come, under control and in control, and we don't, we don't rest.

Toby Tullis: You're no good to anybody if you don't take a step back.

Scott Hammond: And you just said it. When you do the meditation, that's…

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, cease. Just remain.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, and that's what, that, that's what morning mindfulness

Scott Hammond: [clears throat]

Toby Tullis: Every day I get to talk to people about what it is

Toby Tullis: own.

Scott Hammond: Sweet.

Toby Tullis: I don't do it as n- uh, as well as I feel like I should sometimes.

Scott Hammond: It's a process.

Toby Tullis: It is.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, it's a J curve. So I'm reading a guy named John Mark John Mark is an amazing guy. He left two megachurches and, young guy,

Scott Hammond: in Portland.

Toby Tullis: Oh, okay.

Scott Hammond: And he resigned to do the five S's we talked about pre-show.

Toby Tullis: What are the five S's?

Scott Hammond: Five S-

Toby Tullis: I get to finally ask. I was looking for my, my opportunity

Scott Hammond: … Simplicity.

Toby Tullis: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Simplify your life. Silence, practicing silence.

Toby Tullis: Very important.

Scott Hammond: 'Cause wait, I gotta check my phone. Wait, no, I, uh, Papa Murphy's, what's for dinner?

Toby Tullis: Yeah. Is the iron on?

Scott Hammond: The ADD-

Toby Tullis: [laughs] Yeah

Scott Hammond: … tripping. You know, I'm tripping again. And, uh, bottom line is, um, my son is calling from Korea right now.

Toby Tullis: Korea?

Scott Hammond: Korea. I would normally take this,

Toby Tullis: Wow, that's tremendous.

Scott Hammond: He's in Seoul, South Korea.

Toby Tullis: That's exciting.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, so silence. Um, what did, what was my first one?

Toby Tullis: Your s- the silence was the second one. Your first one was

Scott Hammond: Simplicity

Toby Tullis: Simplicity. Simplify your life

Scott Hammond: Simpli- simplify, silence, solitude. Be alone.

Toby Tullis: Good.

Scott Hammond: Don't be afraid to be alone. Uh, Sabbath. So I've, I was, uh, baptized as an Adventist with long, beautiful hair.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And this guy showed up, we're smoking weed, and he goes, "Hey, And I go, "Hey, uh, can you come back next Tuesday

Toby Tullis: Yeah, right.

Scott Hammond: You know, like the smoke coming out.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And he goes-

Toby Tullis: I'll hold onto this, but… [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Yeah. He goes, "I'll be back." So for 13, uh, Tuesdays, Adventistism, which was very akin to… It's very Christian. But they have a Sabbath. They do a Saturday Sabbath-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … which is where I'm getting to in a second Hey, not two, two good programs.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And so at, uh, 14, I got baptized to my Lutheran mother's she came on a Saturday.

Toby Tullis: Oh, that's good, good on her for doing that.

Scott Hammond: And they… Oh, she was great, and she… You know, how could you lose, Scott, 'cause you were going in some other

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Yeah, right. Exactly.

Scott Hammond: And so quite, quite the story and, you know, that I'm kinda with… I'm a fish out of water with a bunch of clean-cut, very wealthy Adventist people who I'm just… And then I met… Maybe it was the Greek girl at 16.

Toby Tullis: Oh, that'll do it.

Scott Hammond: I'm pretty sure that was it.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: That probably has a lot more to do with it than we admit.

Scott Hammond: Who, who doesn't?

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Anyway, so I had to make choices and-

Toby Tullis: I've got that. I've got one.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. [laughs]

Toby Tullis: We-

Scott Hammond: And-

Toby Tullis: I followed at arena.

Scott Hammond: I like… Yeah, yeah. We do. And so we came back to Humboldt, But, uh, Sabbath, the idea of, uh, Friday night, shut it all down.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. So-

Scott Hammond: Take the toys

Toby Tullis: … that's a big one right now.

Scott Hammond: Take the toy, put that turd in the closet.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So Saturday night, could you do it? I haven't done it successfully yet because the J curve says when you learn stuff, you're over here-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … and you actually suck at golf-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … at, or at Sabbath or whatever, and then you get better.

Toby Tullis: Okay.

Scott Hammond: So the J curve is all about, hey, you're gonna start here.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: You're gonna actually get worse before you get better.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. I, I can adhere to that.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: That makes sense to me.

Scott Hammond: So Sabbath-

Toby Tullis: That, that tracks

Scott Hammond: … I've been… Sa- Saturday's my favorite day. Jesus sleep in, Jesus nap, Jesus walk, Jesus bottle of wine, Jesus… We're having a good time with Jesus.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And it's, I don't have to,

Scott Hammond: I get to.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, that's exactly right.

Scott Hammond: And Jodi and I just have a ball. We just play mellow, and, Sabbath hangover on Sunday.

Toby Tullis: And everybody reaps the benefits of, of following that,

Scott Hammond: The rest of the week. It's-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … and it's not a-

Toby Tullis: Everyone that comes into your orbit, though-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … gets to the benefit of that.

Scott Hammond: It's not restrictive. It's like, oh, let's open, It's the fourth commandment. It never got re- dis- you know,

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And he didn't cancel it.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, I'm a big fan of saying

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You know? But it's easy to stay on.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: It's difficult to get off, but once you get off, you're like, "Okay, I'm in control again."

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Shabbat shalom. The last one is, S is,

Toby Tullis: Was it, we're only at four?

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: What's the last S?

Scott Hammond: Shalom.

Toby Tullis: Shalom.

Scott Hammond: Shalom, shalom. Just double, double peace, man.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Can you be present with people? Just-

Toby Tullis: You're gonna get that from all the other four S's.

Scott Hammond: Correct, yeah, and, and you… All we got is you and me now.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: You know? And-

Toby Tullis: That's, that's, that's Buddhism-

Scott Hammond: Let me tell-

Toby Tullis: … living, living in the present moment.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You know?

Scott Hammond: Hey, maybe it's not that far akin.

Toby Tullis: Yeah. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: You think?

Toby Tullis: You l- you live in the present, then,

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, I, I just recently did a morning mindfulness my research, and it was the bucket, the two-bucket theory.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: That, a bucket for what you can control and what you can't control.

Scott Hammond: Oh, cool.

Toby Tullis: And 99% of our problems come from putting our things that happen to us in the wrong bucket.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm. Right.

Toby Tullis: So-

Scott Hammond: I'm gonna freak out and watch the news tonight. What?

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Why, why would you do that to yourself?

Toby Tullis: Yeah. I stopped.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I did it the first term. [laughs]

Scott Hammond: But I want to be a… I want… [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Well-

Toby Tullis: Of what? [laughs]

Scott Hammond: Of a FedEx driver killing a seven-year-old girl.

Toby Tullis: Oh, don't.

Scott Hammond: Oh my God, I, I watched that yesterday at the gym, and I'm going, and my heart sunk.

Toby Tullis: I haven't heard about this.

Scott Hammond: My heart sunk. It's like-

Toby Tullis: It was-

Scott Hammond: … this hurts the entire team.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: This hurts the world team, the US team.

Toby Tullis: I, I'll tell you right now-

Scott Hammond: It's, it's like-

Toby Tullis: … I can no longer watch movies where kids in peril, even knowing it's a movie.

Scott Hammond: It's good.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, I can't. Like Take, Taken.

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Toby Tullis: You know, like-

Scott Hammond: Leave Wilson.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, what, yeah, what's his, what's his line?

Scott Hammond: His line.

Toby Tullis: "You don't know who I am."

Scott Hammond: "I have, I have a certain set of skills."

Toby Tullis: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: [laughs]

Toby Tullis: I can't… As, as awesome as that is-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Toby Tullis: … I can't.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I can't, I cannot get out of the empathetic

Toby Tullis: freeway-

Scott Hammond: That's good

Toby Tullis: … that is knowing that is teenagers in Europe by herself-

Scott Hammond: In danger

Toby Tullis: … in peril.

Scott Hammond: And why would we continue to watch crap like, like that or the news-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … or Fox News or CNN? And-

Toby Tullis: Yeah, 'cause all those faceless children have my

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: That's all that, that's all there is to it.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. And I, and I think it's good to have a brokenness and to be a prayerful person and hold people close to your heart, but I don't… I, why am I looking this up? Why am I watching horror movies?

Toby Tullis: Yeah, right.

Scott Hammond: Of-

Toby Tullis: They can get a doom scrolling.

Scott Hammond: Doom or doom scroll. Oh my gosh.

Toby Tullis: That's the, you know, it's what's so easy to get in f- I riddle my… I'm gonna be on my phone before I go to You know, I read every night before bed-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … but I always grab my phone either before

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: When I do, I make it a purpose to riddle with the funny algorithmic stuff that comes and finds me, the stuff makes me chuckle out loud.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm. Cool.

Toby Tullis: I've got to share that out.

Scott Hammond: That goes out.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, everything.

Scott Hammond: Why not?

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Hey, I got a phone practice that you'll like.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: I have two other spiritual practices. Can I share those?

Toby Tullis: Of course, please.

Scott Hammond: So this baby goes to bed. I put the kids to bed early. This goes on a charger, and it goes away, and I don't touch that. I let, I let that, the kids sleep in in the morning too. So I used to wake up and go-

Toby Tullis: Yeah, right

Scott Hammond: … "Oh, I better check my, my ugh," and it's like, what

Scott Hammond: here?

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: What are you doing to your brain? o'clock when I've lis- done my yoga, listened to Ortberg, taken the prayer walk in the morning. So I, I-

Toby Tullis: I've always heard that. I've always heard, uh, one

Scott Hammond: Put it to bed.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: What, what are you… Why am I killing myself on my phone?

Toby Tullis: Yeah, don't even look at an email.

Scott Hammond: What are you getting from it?

Toby Tullis: Nothing.

Scott Hammond: Endorphin hit.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, that's it.

Scott Hammond: The, here's the truth. The truth is you're,

Toby Tullis: Uh-huh.

Scott Hammond: "Oh, look. Oh, they liked it. Oh, oh, an, oh,

Toby Tullis: Which i- which is a- also a benefit of recovery in the sense know a little bit about that stuff.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: You know, where the dangers that

Scott Hammond: Oh my gosh.

Toby Tullis: You know? And it's good. It's good to have that, that… Do I act on it all the time? Absolutely not.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: You know?

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I mean, I'm, I'm in a radio booth by f-You know,

Toby Tullis: It's like

Scott Hammond: Oh, we all have endorphin. Well, and y- about. I imagine there's some currency there-

Toby Tullis: Sure

Scott Hammond: … what you have to say. I, I get that.

Scott Hammond: The, um, so for Lent, which I've never really practiced, uh, I fasted condemnation this year.

Toby Tullis: Interesting. What a-

Scott Hammond: Condemnation is a dirty word, and it's no-

Toby Tullis: Did you find yourself condemning a lot of p- things, people-

Scott Hammond: Um

Toby Tullis: … whatever came in your purview?

Scott Hammond: Not before Lent. [laughs]

Toby Tullis: [laughs] Right. Right. All-

Scott Hammond: I never, I never condemned, ever

Toby Tullis: … all, ever.

Scott Hammond: I never-

Toby Tullis: And then all of a sudden you put the, the con- the,

Toby Tullis: like-

Scott Hammond: Well-

Toby Tullis: … wow

Scott Hammond: … it turns out that when you're sensitive to something, um, you're trying to quit smoking, you're trying to quit drinking, look for a white Mustang, that k- killer car.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And you s- and then it starts to highlight.

Toby Tullis: Sure.

Scott Hammond: It's called a reticular activator.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: 'Cause your mi- your mind starts to look for that stuff,

Toby Tullis: It's almost a form of manifestation.

Scott Hammond: Correct. Yeah. And your manif- And so, a- and, and some of my condemnation was even about other people.

Toby Tullis: Oh, sure.

Scott Hammond: [laughs] Most of it was on this guy,

Scott Hammond: which is-

Toby Tullis: When you look deeper, when you can scratch back the surface-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Toby Tullis: … you find out that there's mirrors involved, right?

Scott Hammond: Oh, it's so hard on ourselves.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: It's so crazy. So-

Toby Tullis: I g- I go by the principle of there's at least two perspectives in which to look at anything.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And if you can get out of your own shoes for a minute to just look at the

Toby Tullis: perspective-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … I'm reminded of the image of two people sitting there looking at a six or a nine on the-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Toby Tullis: … floor.

Scott Hammond: Oh, right.

Toby Tullis: And they're both yelling their truths.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: And they're both right.

Scott Hammond: And they're both correct.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: But if they just swap spots, they would know.

Scott Hammond: I love it. So-

Toby Tullis: So just do that. Guess, ch- take, understand that there is a, a different perspective out there that's probably just as truthful as yours.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. I try to listen to it.

Toby Tullis: It helps. I try to listen, too. That's a-

Scott Hammond: You don't have to get any on you. You don't have to-

Toby Tullis: That's a really good-

Scott Hammond: … adapt.

Toby Tullis: Yeah, exactly.

Scott Hammond: What, what about respect and connection and relationship? And that's what we're all talking about.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Hey, uh, we're almost done, so guess what?

Toby Tullis: What?

Scott Hammond: Shout out, how do we get to your station?

Toby Tullis: One, uh, how, I, you know what I can do? I can do my, uh, to, to qualify that I am who I say I am-

Scott Hammond: Please

Toby Tullis: … I should probably just do my top of the

Scott Hammond: Go.

Toby Tullis: I did this at, uh, uh, Arcata Rising when I took the microphone. I was a host over there. Plus, you can see me hosting Cannafest this That's kind of cool. I'll be on stage for that.

Scott Hammond: Oh, you'll do that-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … at the ballpark.

Toby Tullis: I will.

Scott Hammond: We have less than three minutes. Go.

Toby Tullis: You're listening to 104.3 or 104.7 K-H-U-M, KHUM, out of Cutten, McKinleyville, Arcata, Fortuna, all over Humboldt County, live on khum.com. My name is Toby. This is Toby in the Morning, and everything I just said is a lie. [laughs]

Toby Tullis: Every day.

Scott Hammond: And you're live with me, and now we're gonna go. You know how I know a great show with you and I?

Toby Tullis: Hmm.

Scott Hammond: It went quick.

Toby Tullis: It did go quick. I can't believe you said there's three I had three minutes-

Scott Hammond: It's crazy. Yeah

Toby Tullis: … in my lap.

Scott Hammond: No, uh, now I'm gonna, uh, round it. So real quick, What do you, what do you, what are we gonna say at your funeral? There'll be extra chairs.

Toby Tullis: That he was an approachable person that was trustworthy.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Toby Tullis: And he was a good friend to have.

Scott Hammond: That's beautiful. I love it.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Thanks for being here.

Toby Tullis: Thank you so much for having me, Scott.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Toby Tullis: I appreciate this.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Thanks for joining us. Hundred, 100% Humboldt. Uh, like us, love us, send us money, gold bull- bullion-

Toby Tullis: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … Jaguars. We'll take it all.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And we're on, uh, Access Humboldt TV.

Toby Tullis: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And we're on all the podcast platforms.

Toby Tullis: Like and follow.

Scott Hammond: We're on [laughs] YouTube.

Toby Tullis: I saw a kid say, "Smash that like and follow button."

Scott Hammond: Like and fo- like and follow.

Toby Tullis: [laughs]

Scott Hammond: We would love that. Hey, thanks, thanks, Toby. Appreciate you.

Toby Tullis: Thanks, Scott. I appreciate it.

Scott Hammond: All right. Have a good day.
