Scott Hammond: Ladies and gentlemen, friends and neighbors, Scott Hammond and the 100% Humboldt podcast with my newest

Scott Hammond: best friend, Cassandra Hesseltine.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Hello.

Scott Hammond: Hi, Cassandra.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Hi.

Scott Hammond: How's it going?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Good. How are you?

Scott Hammond: I'm well. Who, who are, who are you? What… How did you-

Cassandra Hesseltine: That's the question, isn't it? The eternal question that we all ask ourselves.

Scott Hammond: Right. Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: And I, I hate to say… Somebody said recently, "Hey, what do you do?" And this like s- it's, like, not the right question. Who are you and how did you get to Humboldt, and tell us the Cassandra story.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm.

Scott Hammond: And what are your duties, first of all? What's your, what, what's your role in, in, in the county?

Cassandra Hesseltine: So my role in the county, my title is Humboldt/Del Norte Film Commissioner. Uh, so I am the liaison between productions that come here to film-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and, or even productions that start up here, and the area that I represent, so which is two counties. I'm also vice president of the film liaisons in California

Cassandra Hesseltine: statewide.

Scott Hammond: Oh, wow.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: On the state level.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: That's cool. Tell us where'd you grow up. What'd you… Who, who were you growing up?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, yes. Well, um, it's no surprise that I work in film because I, uh, very early gravitated towards TV and film and acting and wanting, wanted to be an actor. Went into theater first, uh, down in Orange

Cassandra Hesseltine: County.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It was very exciting. Born in LA, raised in Orange County mostly.

Scott Hammond: What part of Orange County?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh, couple different parts, but primarily Westminster.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: By Huntington.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. And then I came here to go to college thinking that I would fulfill my parents' dreams of being science or doing, you know, scientific stuff or, or-

Scott Hammond: You too?

Cassandra Hesseltine: … be a doctor, like most people, right?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um-

Scott Hammond: Who didn't?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. And, and I love astronomy. I love, uh, psychology. I love environmental studies. I love all those things.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, but at the time, you know, it w- I realized, no, my true passion was, was, you know, uh, theater and film. I ended up actually getting a degree at, at Humboldt, at, back then State. Uh, and that's when you could create your, your degree, kinda your emphasis with it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So it-

Scott Hammond: Right

Cassandra Hesseltine: … was using theater as a form of therapy with youth at risk.

Scott Hammond: So did you write your own major?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm. Yep.

Scott Hammond: You're the second guest in two weeks. Uh, Griff Griffin wrote his own-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … in, uh, at Chico State, I think.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, that's, that's a… I almost did that myself. Was it complicated to write your own major?

Cassandra Hesseltine: No, because it was mostly, um, psychology classes, but I, it was, like, about equivalent to what a minor would be in theater.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And so when I took, like, a directing class, it was with the idea that if I was directing to youth minors-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … i- in a scene and how to pull the emotional out of it, you know. Theater and psychology go hand-in-hand, you know.

Scott Hammond: Sure.

Cassandra Hesseltine: The studying of the, the individual, but also, you know, finding yourself within the character.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So, um, it wasn't too terrible, and then I got a minor in computer programming as well.

Scott Hammond: Wow, okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, Humboldt State.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Liberal arts.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Class of '82.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Ah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: My kids go, "Did you major in recess?" I go, "Kinda." But minor's in, uh, theater-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … and in, uh-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … business-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm

Scott Hammond: … in rec and in PE, so it was-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Ooh

Scott Hammond: … not, not a bad liberal arts education.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: And, and look what's happened to me now.

Scott Hammond: I'm

Scott Hammond: doing this

Scott Hammond: with you.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So hey, fun.

Cassandra Hesseltine: There you go.

Scott Hammond: So what's your role then at, as the film commissioner here in, in

Scott Hammond: Humboldt?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Well, like I said, I'm the liaison.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So we do-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … we focus on a few different things. The, the primary job is to focus on marketing the region to film productions and to the film world. It used to be Hollywood, right, but it's no longer that. And then once they're here, we're the boots on the ground. And then after they leave, we focus on film tourism. So that's why we've created a lot of new projects like a Map of the Movies, um, and then an app that has the Map of the Movies in it, as well as the Forest Moon

Cassandra Hesseltine: Festival-

Scott Hammond: Ooh

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and the Museum of Cinema that we have in front of our office.

Scott Hammond: Gosh, let's talk about all of it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Great.

Scott Hammond: How about, how about a core story? Uh, l- I wanna h- know more about you, then we'll go to Leo DiCaprio coming to town or something. Were you here for Jim Carrey and everybody?

Cassandra Hesseltine: In college. I'm not that old.

Scott Hammond: Sorry.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I'm never than you are.

Scott Hammond: How about Outbreak?

Cassandra Hesseltine: This interview's over.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. That's it, Scott.

Scott Hammond: You're done. Oh, that's funny.

Cassandra Hesseltine: You'll never work in this town again.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. I don't think I'd do all right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh.

Scott Hammond: Um, so you, so you went… Graduated Westminster High School? Is it-

Cassandra Hesseltine: La Quinta.

Scott Hammond: La Quinta in Westminster.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Correct.

Scott Hammond: Did insurance school in, uh, on Bristol, in Irvine.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, okay. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, for a year.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: State Farm guy.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Okay.

Scott Hammond: Drank lots of red Kool-Aid.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: No.

Scott Hammond: I like Orange County. Is, is OC inappropriate?

Scott Hammond: Is it-

Cassandra Hesseltine: No, we call it the OC.

Scott Hammond: It's… So yeah, my friend Jim from San Diego, where I'm s- where I'm from-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … 'cause it's like calling it Frisco. You'd never do that. I go-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh

Scott Hammond: … "The OC, dude. Come on."

Cassandra Hesseltine: People do. I don't know. I mean, people do. Um-

Scott Hammond: Now, that area's blown up completely, right?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Nice weather, though.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. I don't… I didn't know what weather was until I moved out of Orange County.

Scott Hammond: Right. 'Cause-

Cassandra Hesseltine: It was always 75-

Scott Hammond: It was one weather

Cassandra Hesseltine: … even on Christmas. Yeah, it was one. It's sunny and 75.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I don't understand.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Night and morning, low clouds and fog, clearing after noon, and then there was magical 75.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Always.

Scott Hammond: All year long. San Diego.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Same thing. So what brought you to Humboldt? So was it the, the major?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, college. Uh, environmental studies is what I thought I was gonna do-

Scott Hammond: Right

Cassandra Hesseltine: … for about six months. That or oceanography. Didn't last long.

Scott Hammond: Ocean major.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Didn't work.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. I loved it, loved it, but it's a hobby. Those things are all hobbies.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: I thought I'd do science, and I was just not, um, not the brightest crayon in the box.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Ah.

Scott Hammond: Maybe one of the broken ones, but even the broken ones still can color. Learned that today at lunch. I thought, "Wow, metaphor city, man. Come on, baby."

Cassandra Hesseltine: Huh. Okay.

Scott Hammond: Okay. So what did you do after college?

Cassandra Hesseltine: What did I do? Um, let's see. I… Well, I worked at a teen center. I did do theater, uh, and worked at-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … the Boys & Girls Club, uh, house, as well as the teen center

Cassandra Hesseltine: here. Um, and I did work with youth at risk.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I also-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … um, worked with some children that were, uh, had, got out of juvenile hall and were in a program, a theater program.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So I, I actually used my major.

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It was pretty exciting.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, but then I got married and started my own family, and it… You know, working with youth at risk is a special, it's a special place that you have to go to to be able to handle.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … I was trained in suicide intervention, so I was the one that the kids came to

Cassandra Hesseltine: for that.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Or if they were really, you know, had traumatized experiences, you know. Um, usually if a kid's in juvenile hall, there's a lot of things going on in the home life that isn't great.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And so we, when you're doing theater and you're wanting to pull those stories out of them and help them give a voice, you're hearing a lot, um, that's really intense and in a short amount of time. So when I went to go start my own family, it, it became really apparent that I couldn't handle the heartaches at that point.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I had done-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … years of it. Um, had a couple kids actually-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … unfortunately murdered, and, uh, ended up going, "Okay, well, I, I… As much as I love giving and trying to help," um, I n- I knew it was really hard to, to have a little baby and be doing both. I-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … the people who can,

Cassandra Hesseltine: wow.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Because it's, um, it's heartbreaking.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. I like you a lot more already.

Scott Hammond: It's cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Aw.

Scott Hammond: You helped broken kids.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I did.

Scott Hammond: I love-

Cassandra Hesseltine: I did

Scott Hammond: … I love broken kids.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And I'm still actually friends with several that I knew back then, which was-

Scott Hammond: For sure

Cassandra Hesseltine: … is really exciting. You know, like we follow each other on Facebook and comment, and you know, when I run-

Scott Hammond: I love it

Cassandra Hesseltine: … into them in, in town. And to see them grow up now and have their own families-

Scott Hammond: Right

Cassandra Hesseltine: … it's, yeah, pretty special.

Scott Hammond: That's really cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So were you, were you full-time at the Boys & Girls Club?

Cassandra Hesseltine: I was. Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: That's kinda where I think I might remember you.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: When Liz was-

Cassandra Hesseltine: I was a programmer

Scott Hammond: … Liz was there back in the day.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I, Liz was, um, sh- I was there when Liz was just running the front counter. This was well before she became-

Scott Hammond: This was way back.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Cassandra Hesseltine: That was when she first like started working there as a teenager I was there.

Scott Hammond: 100 years ago.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, you're in trouble now.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Watch it, Mr. Gingham.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, okay. And hair. No hair. Yeah. Voted prettiest hair at Sweetwater High School.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Scott Hammond: National City, California. Go Sue High.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Scott Hammond: Class of '78, yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Okay.

Scott Hammond: Everybody else is getting voted-

Cassandra Hesseltine: I was five when that happened.

Scott Hammond: Thank you. Oh, now we're even. Okay. You'll never work in this town again. I like that line, though. I'll use that one, too.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Prettiest… You know, everybody else is most li- likely to succeed or the smartest.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: The most magical.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And I had the most magical hair. And, you know, then kids, drugs, time, age.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, yeah.

Scott Hammond: You know?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Life. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Life.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: I like, I like your capacity, uh, inference, 'cause it's hard to do… You know, to, to maybe be a full-time nurse and to do

Scott Hammond: kids-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … and to do other things. You know?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And to be aware enough to go, "Hey, I need to adjust this."

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. Yeah. It was, it, it was hard. The second one, especially the, the young girl. The, the boy that I had worked with that was murdered was, it was brutal, and dealing with, you know, uh, kids who were suicidal and all of that and all the traumas.

Cassandra Hesseltine: But-

Scott Hammond: Trauma

Cassandra Hesseltine: … it was the second one that, that really got me, and I was I think about six months pregnant, and I went, "I can't go back.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I can't-"

Scott Hammond: Can't do this.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. It was too emotionally hard for me at that point.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: But I, I would love to at some point be able to go back again.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and I fi- I feel that I just, that part of me that likes to give back just is doing it in a different way now.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: That's cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Well, maybe, uh, who knows what's possible. Yeah, I, um, we have a special needs son, Gabriel. When he was born-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm

Scott Hammond: … it was easy to be at Shriners and UC Davis Medical.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: And since the visits back just for fun, it's impossible. I don't even wanna be close to that place.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, interesting.

Scott Hammond: 'Cause you had grace for the moment.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And now there's a new season, and, uh, it just reminds me of trauma and

Scott Hammond: craziness.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm.

Scott Hammond: But… And the grace to get through it all, but-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … so had kids, then what?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Let me think. You ask the hard questions. That was a long time ago. Um

Scott Hammond: Could've been that long.

Cassandra Hesseltine: What did I do? Um, you know, you know, ran some businesses with my, uh, with the, with the, uh, the father of the, of the children, and had a couple kids, went to LA, um, got into film. Um, thought I was gonna do it in acting. Fell in love with being behind the camera. It was the year 2000, and someone said, "I'll put you in my movie if you help." It was a little indie when digital cameras were coming out, and, "Hey, why don't you, you know, uh, help me with, like, some casting and organizing my movie and I'll put you in it?" And the next thing I know, I was first AD,

Cassandra Hesseltine: producer-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … you know, running the set.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I made the strip board of, uh, um, of y- you know, each scene and how you're gonna shoot it and all of that stuff, and, like, organized the whole thing. And 'cause I, I could organize really well from had already been a programmer at the Boys & Girls and having a, a business at that point already

Cassandra Hesseltine: once. Um,

Cassandra Hesseltine: and it, it, it just came naturally, and I loved it. What I loved about that part was it used my left brain. It used all that skillsets, that I had the computer, uh, programming minor. All of that stuff, like-

Scott Hammond: The nerd stepped up

Cassandra Hesseltine: … came alive. Yeah, all my nerdy side.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And what I found is even though I was from down there-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and I always wanted to work in storytelling, I didn't wanna have to be a size zero. I didn't wanna have to have a nose job.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I didn't wanna have to… That's, to me, though I understand your aesthetics is part of w- what character you are and what you look like and how you wanna, what you're playing-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … um, it's not my acting.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And at that point, I was 27. I w- I had already been acting for 13 years, and I was already actually a trained

Cassandra Hesseltine: actor.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It felt like it was taking the joy out of it when I had to worry about all those other details all the time.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And so within a year, I went into producing. I went, "Well, if I ever act in front of the camera, so be it, but I'm gonna, I'm gonna act on stage," which is more the pure art of acting and storytelling, and went into, um, producing. And shortly after living down there, um, 9/11 happens. I've got, you know, a four-year-old, um, haven't had the second kid yet, and we decide that we're gonna move back to Humboldt, 'cause I'm like if I start producing in the Bay Area, and I'm like, if I'm… Why, why live in LA if I'm producing in the Bay Area?

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, so we moved back to Humboldt, you know, um, built a house, had a second kid, and, uh, started working in film up here again, you know, and helping cast and working on productions where they were here.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And then I still would produce out of the area, and so it was kind of a hodgepodge of what I did.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And then started teaching acting actually as well, and, and, and started working with Redwood Curtain Theatre, which I had gone to college with, with them. Um, so it was amazing to rekindle with them and start doing-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … the love part of theater, and I started directing then as well. So acting, directing in theater, and then, um, behind the scenes in film until one day came where I walked off a, a shoot, a TV show, episodic television show that we were filming down in, in the Bay Area. I came home, been home just a couple days, was exhausted, and, uh, the film commission called me and said, "Well, we know you use film commissioners. We know you, you know, understand the job.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Would you-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … fill in for a couple weeks? We just lost our film commissioner." And-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … that was in October of 2010, and then they said, "Oh, well, wait a minute. We probably can't hire one during the holidays. Would you do it for a couple months?"

Scott Hammond: Hm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And then they took me to a bar. Kid you not. It's just a true story.

Scott Hammond: Of course they did.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And then they kept handing me drinks, and they… And I set the office up and everything 'cause it was, it was all in boxes. It was, nothing was set up. They were about to build a new website. Like nothing… It was like starting a brand new entity but with 30 years of history. It was very bizarre. And, um-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … so I set it up for someone else, and not knowing who that was. And then I said, "Are you trying to… Do you keep buying me drinks 'cause you're trying to get me to keep the job?" The- these board members are long past, so this is not my current board.

Scott Hammond: Not you guys.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So I can tell this-

Scott Hammond: It's not you

Cassandra Hesseltine: … uh, and this was 15 years ago. And they, uh, said, "Yeah." And I went, "Okay, stop. I'll just take the job." 'Cause then I realized I can work on bigger, better productions and live here, and my kids were little, and live in Humboldt. And I went, oh my gosh, that's amazing. 'Cause what I was doing was, you know, um, pretty independent in, uh, feature films and episodic television show that wasn't, you know, Saturday night at 8:00 PM. That's like a bad slot, you know?

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So all right. Um, working my way up, but I, this felt like it was a, a win-win, you know?

Cassandra Hesseltine: And then, yeah, I just fell in love with it. I really quickly realized it was more than just getting to do film. I, it was giving back to my community, so it was all of a sudden bringing back that

Cassandra Hesseltine: part of me-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … that wanted to work with youth and helping my community, got to merge with film because recognizing the outside dollars that came into the

Cassandra Hesseltine: area.

Scott Hammond: Win, win, win, win.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, exactly.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And the jobs creation and people talking about in winter when they walk outside and Leonardo DiCaprio's running in a bathrobe on the on-ramp in Arcata, and the joy that they feel, you know, or the Force Moon Festival. Jedis, you know, walking around and, and stormtroopers and people who can't afford to go to Disneyland, but now we brought Disneyland to them.

Scott Hammond: Better yet.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So it's, it's now I, I get warm and fuzzy

Cassandra Hesseltine: about that-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … about merging my two realities-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … of helping people as well as, you know, helping my community, but I also get to do it in the genre

Cassandra Hesseltine: that I love.

Scott Hammond: Gosh, get a job that you love or have to work, 'cause you got your dream job.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Usually.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Sometimes. Mostly. Uh, yes.

Scott Hammond: Everybody that says that probably doesn't really work.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Exactly.

Scott Hammond: So yeah. Gosh, I, I don't know where to launch from this. It's like, uh, so Matt St. Charles, you know-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … Matt and Rick.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, of course.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, and then, uh, Ray DeSoto and-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … his brother Malcolm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm. The DeSoto brothers, yep.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, so have you done any-

Cassandra Hesseltine: And Jonathan. Jonathan also is part of that group.

Scott Hammond: Okay. Have you done production with those guys?

Cassandra Hesseltine: All, yeah. Mm-hmm, of course.

Scott Hammond: Gosh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Small world.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Redwood Curtain Theatre, is that off the foot… Is that on First Street?

Cassandra Hesseltine: It was. Um-

Scott Hammond: And it's closed down? It's nothing-

Cassandra Hesseltine: We've act- Uh, we, the, the company still exists. We now, um, are housed with NCRT.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So they've renamed their theater the D Street, Fifth and D Street Theatre-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … which we greatly appreciate, and they've taken us in.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh, so both NCRT and Redwood Curtain Theatre are now housed in the

Cassandra Hesseltine: same-

Scott Hammond: In the same one

Cassandra Hesseltine: … playhouse. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Which is at downtown Eureka, where I used my prop. Right over here in Eureka. Which is in California.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes, it is.

Scott Hammond: Right over there, Humboldt Bay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm.

Scott Hammond: North of San Francisco. It rains a lot. You don't wanna live here. But you can come and spend money and see other things.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Anyway.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Um, wow. Where, where did that come from?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, so I'm directing a play now, and it opens next Friday, so I'm very excited.

Scott Hammond: Really?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: What's it called?

Cassandra Hesseltine: This is the full title.

Scott Hammond: Is it like a nast- is it a nasty word?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, am I allowed to say a cuss word?

Scott Hammond: Of course.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Okay, so this is the full title. Uh, good luck. Um, it's called POTUS, or Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive.

Scott Hammond: Whoa.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's a Broadway play.

Scott Hammond: That's a long one. You wrote it?

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's a Broadway play.

Scott Hammond: Oh, it's a Broadway play.

Cassandra Hesseltine: No.

Scott Hammond: Well, you could have wrote it if it's went to Broadway already.

Cassandra Hesseltine: No, no. It's a real play. It was a real play done on Broadway.

Scott Hammond: Nice.

Cassandra Hesseltine: But it was wr- written about three or four years ago. Yeah, I can't remember the exact ti- I should, I should know that, but I don't.

Scott Hammond: Any famous local actors?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes, actually.

Scott Hammond: Like Hugh Marcus?

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's seven women.

Scott Hammond: Oh, it's women. Well, there had to be a POTUS in there.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Nope.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: There isn't actually.

Scott Hammond: It's all women.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes, it's all women.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: They think that they've killed POTUS, and so it's a, it's a farce. It's very funny.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, until it's not. There's a few moments that are pretty, you know, poignant

Cassandra Hesseltine: and-

Scott Hammond: Is Carol Lang in this perhaps?

Cassandra Hesseltine: No, she's, no, she's not.

Scott Hammond: You know Carol?

Cassandra Hesseltine: I do.

Scott Hammond: I bet you do.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. Yeah, no, Cynthia Martell, who actually was a, nominated for a Tony on Broadway-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and has been in tons of TV shows and movies, including ER and-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … um, she's in it. She plays FLOTUS. And, um, uh, you know, there's, there's Chris Joris, who is one of the original founders of Redwood Curtain. She's also in it.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh, Caroline MacFarlane, who's done a lot of NCRT and, and a lot of theater in the, in the area, um, she's in it as well.

Cassandra Hesseltine: There's, um-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … so yeah, seven really talented actresses that are in it.

Scott Hammond: Cool. When's, when does it open?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Next Friday, March 14th.

Scott Hammond: Oh. Tickets can be found where? Go ahead and-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Sure, uh-

Scott Hammond: Call it out, yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … at NCRT, uh, North Coast Repertory Theatre's, uh, website, I'm not sure if there dot com. Uh, and then obviously redwoodcurtaintheatre, believe, dot org. Uh, again, I should know these things. I didn't realize I was gonna be saying that.

Scott Hammond: You know what my kids always say?

Cassandra Hesseltine: You could Google.

Scott Hammond: "Hey, Google it, man."

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, I, I mean, hello.

Scott Hammond: Hey, Google us.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Just Google it.

Scott Hammond: 100% Humboldt, Scott Hammond, Google it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: Uh, NCRT, Google it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Redwood Curtain Theatre.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Or Redwood Curtain Theatre.

Scott Hammond: Google it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Cassandra Hesseltine.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Hazel- Hay- Anyway, we know you.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Hazeltine.

Scott Hammond: We'll get Hazeltine. Gosh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Messed it up. Oh, well.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Okay.

Scott Hammond: I'll be okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So it's my, it's not even my name, so it doesn't matter.

Scott Hammond: That's okay. It is.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I should just go by Cassandra.

Scott Hammond: For the moment it is.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Eh. You know why? Because I was gonna take, go back to Roberts, but there's like 15 Cassandra Roberts on IMDb, and only one Cassandra Hesseltine on IMDb. So for work-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Cassandra Hesseltine: … I have kept this last name.

Scott Hammond: That makes sense.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: I like it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: So tell us about the, uh, the festival, the, uh, the Endor Moon, the moon

Scott Hammond: at the-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Forest, Forest Moon Festival

Scott Hammond: … Forest of Endor.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: That's at-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes

Scott Hammond: … that's the, at the, uh, at the Skywalk, right?

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's all over, actually.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's all over the place. So, um, it is… The idea came up about 10, 12 years ago, where we were realizing when we were making a map of the movies that filmed in both counties that Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, uh, had filmed in both Humboldt and Del Norte, and we were like, "Wow, that's pretty cool."

Scott Hammond: Let's start there. So where were those filmed exactly?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: One was some-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Sure. So in Humboldt County, on Highway 36, there is a grove, my favorite grove out of all the groves, Cheatham Grove, it's beautiful, and that is where they shot the speeder chase scene. So where they're doing, on the speeder chase, and, um, they're going, and there's a tree, and they go underneath it, that's all there.

Scott Hammond: I always imagined that was Smith River or Jed Smith.

Scott Hammond: Nope?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Nope. Nope. It was there. And, and actually it was just a guy wearing a harness with a camera.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And it was the first time they had, I believe… I'm gonna, I'm picturing Star Wars fans listening to this now, and they're gonna, like, wreck me with my facts. But it was the first time that I believed that they were able to speed it up or something like that, run it at a certain w- way. So that's how they get that fast pace, like it's moving.

Scott Hammond: Sure. Correct.

Cassandra Hesseltine: 'Cause really, they're shooting the actors on a green screen. They weren't bringing those speeders out there and doing all of that.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, but the guy in the camera runs through, and then, um, and so-

Scott Hammond: It's done, it's done very well

Cassandra Hesseltine: … it's done very well.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: For back then it was very exciting. And then the second part, the Endor

Cassandra Hesseltine: Village-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … with all the Ewoks-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Cassandra Hesseltine: … which I had no idea they were crazy and eat Stormtroopers. I thought they were nice, cute, cuddly little things.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um-

Scott Hammond: Oh, oh, they eat them.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes. They, um-

Scott Hammond: You didn't know that?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. They filmed on private property as well as Jed Smith, um, for that. And what they… They knew when they were filming on the private property, they had requested it, and they said, "Yeah, sure. Go ahead. You can film on the private property 'cause we're about to, um, cut down these trees."

Scott Hammond: Yes.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And so that, unfortunately for us, where the Ewok village actually

Cassandra Hesseltine: was-

Scott Hammond: Gone

Cassandra Hesseltine: … it was, uh, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And they, they, that was already gonna be the deal.

Scott Hammond: Did they cut down the Ewoks, too? I just… Sorry.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, my God.

Scott Hammond: Wait. Fiction and truth, yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So, um, so we can get near the site, but the actual village doesn't exist. But we could still celebrate it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And there-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … nowhere else did they film the film sites of Endor, so we are the only place in the world-

Scott Hammond: Right

Cassandra Hesseltine: … can claim that, so it's pretty exciting.

Scott Hammond: So now we have this festival.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: How does that, what is that?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: What's that about?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Well, you know, when we decided we should celebrate that fact that we had such a, um, important part of film history in a, in one of the biggest series, then we said, "Well, what if we do, like, a little festival? We could show Return of the Jedi. We could have some booths. We could have some Stormtroopers."

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And it just started from there. And we did a May the Fourth event, uh, four years ago.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And it was fun. You know, it was all at Sequoia Park in Eureka with the zoo.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And we brought in Kevin Thompson, who actually played an Ewok in the

Cassandra Hesseltine: movie.

Scott Hammond: I remember this, yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, yeah. And we had some costumers and some games, and we showed the movie, and it was just really fun.

Scott Hammond: Are you gonna say why May the Fourth is important?

Cassandra Hesseltine: May the fourth be with you.

Scott Hammond: Oh, there, you said the word.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, but we actually-

Scott Hammond: Nick rarely smiles. He's smiling.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Scott Hammond: That's good.

Cassandra Hesseltine: We moved it from that-

Scott Hammond: That's not true. You smile all the time.

Cassandra Hesseltine: We moved it from that date because in order to actually be able to get celebrities or to get out-of-town costumers, we can't actually do it on the same date that everybody in the rest of the world celebrates this.

Scott Hammond: Is celebrating.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So we moved it to a weekend that actually has a low in hotels for us. That way, also, if it, it became big-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … we had enough hotels to accommodate, you know-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Cassandra Hesseltine: … people coming from out of town.

Scott Hammond: Not Humboldt graduation weekend.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Correct. It's been in between graduations, in between Mother's Day and Father's Day. It's in between all of those things.

Scott Hammond: Perfect.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So it's-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … um, actually the first weekend after Memorial every year.

Scott Hammond: After, okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Perfect.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And that brings people to town.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, in both in Humboldt and Del Norte, 'cause activities happen all over.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: There's activities up in Crescent City and throughout Del Norte as well, and the same down here in Humboldt.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And-

Scott Hammond: Love it

Cassandra Hesseltine: … yeah, and we put a schedule together. There's a whole team that works on this, you know, and it's amazing. And a lot of out-of-town costumers who are volunteers that-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … that show up in, um, film-quality costumes per Lucasfilm, and they have to be approved.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And-

Scott Hammond: Perfect

Cassandra Hesseltine: … they come and spend their money and are, are sweethearts.

Scott Hammond: And-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Entertain the guests

Scott Hammond: … why would you go to a Trekkie con- convention-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Right

Scott Hammond: … when you could do this?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Well, well, the feedback we've gotten from a lot of people is usually it's in a convention center.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And ours is, half the time, most of the time, outside.

Scott Hammond: Perfect.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Half of it's free, you know-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … non-ticketed, and it's near the redwoods, and so you c- and then you can go near a film site. So they're like, "This is magic."

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, so it's pretty exciting.

Scott Hammond: Take a picture with an Ewok by a redwood.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: Come on.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Why not?

Scott Hammond: That's pretty cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Right?

Scott Hammond: Wow, I'm on Endor right now. That's cool. With an Ewok. Here we are. I love that. So, and, and so it's at the Sky Walk as well?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes, we do do activities there at the zoo-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … um, and we, uh, go on the Sky Walk.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, every year they've been part of it, and we've been… Uh, city of Eureka has been amazing, um, and the zoo and-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and the, um, the, the rec department that helps us out with that, Jim from… There's Jim from the zoo and Jim from the re- recs department.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And both of them, everybody's been amazing.

Scott Hammond: We're gonna have Jim from the zoo on the show.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Ah, yeah. He's great.

Scott Hammond: Supposed to be a great guy.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: I've talked… I, he- we just missed, but we'll, we'll hit that.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So film commissioner promotes the region, supports filmmakers. You- it's permit facilitation. I mean, uh, that's gotta be like th- this replete,

Scott Hammond: crazy-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes

Scott Hammond: … project management thing, right?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: That you do.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Well, you know, when we first took the job we didn't do, we don't, we didn't issue

Cassandra Hesseltine: any-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … permits. Um, there's 15 jurisdictions and agencies-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … that do, and we have to know who they are-

Scott Hammond: Gotcha

Cassandra Hesseltine: … what their needs are, what they require, what area they represent, and then we introduce the filmmaker to them and then-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … try to help do any mediation. For instance, in Del Norte one time I had a, a producer accidentally, when she was pulling a permit from Roads in Del Norte-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … asking for, to do a, um, avalanche on a road. She's like, "I just wanna close one lane. A car pulls up, sees a dead body, and an avalanche happens." And Roads said, "No." And she's like-

Scott Hammond: No

Cassandra Hesseltine: … "I don't understand. Why aren't they letting me do this?" And so we got on a three-way call, and, and I had her describe it, and I could hear the fear in the, you know, liaison from Roads from the county. And I said, "Excuse me, wait. Producer? Um, are you actually gonna show that avalanche?" "No, it's just a sound we hear, a sound cue that we hear off camera as-

Scott Hammond: Nice

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and one rock goes across."

Scott Hammond: Fixed.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And then Roads goes, "Oh, I pictured you really doing an avalanche."

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And I was just like, "No, it's movie magic." So I was able to talk filmese, you know-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … with, uh, people who don't know anything to do with film, and help translate that.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And film people sometimes forget these people don't know-

Scott Hammond: Right

Cassandra Hesseltine: … h- what, you know, what, what they're actually saying and how to translate it to

Cassandra Hesseltine: a permit.

Scott Hammond: Way, way to liaise.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Thank you.

Scott Hammond: I like it. Kind of negotiation.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It is.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It is.

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And i- it actually, that is what happens.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I worked on a Kirsten Dunst movie, and we sat at a table about this big, and there was, you know, half of it was rangers with guns and the other half was all film people, and everybody was staring at me. I sat in the middle, and they were like-

Scott Hammond: Here we go

Cassandra Hesseltine: … yeah. They, they wanted to film in a state park in July when it was really popular, and they wanted to close it down.

Scott Hammond: Busy, yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And the rangers weren't having it, so I was getting, like-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … a no yes, and I said… I was like, "Uh-oh." And, uh, so I used my improv as an a- good actress does, and I said-

Scott Hammond: Right

Cassandra Hesseltine: … uh, "Well, what would you allow, then?"

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And the ranger-

Scott Hammond: And your salesperson voice

Cassandra Hesseltine: … the ranger looked at me, and… That was my mom's voice. Well, maybe salesperson. But the ranger looked at me and go-

Scott Hammond: Same thing.

Cassandra Hesseltine: He, yeah. And he goes, "Ugh." He was so, like, he was like, dang it.

Scott Hammond: Got him.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, because-

Scott Hammond: What could you do here?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Instead of saying yes, say yes or no, or asking a question that's yes or no-

Scott Hammond: Right

Cassandra Hesseltine: … it was like, well then, this is what they wanna do. Where would you allow it within the park?

Scott Hammond: Love it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: What would work for you?

Scott Hammond: What's possible?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: What's the law?

Cassandra Hesseltine: And I found out after doing that, I now basically get a yes any time-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … because I'm asking… I always ask them for their input instead of saying, "Well, this film wants to do this," and then they put a wall up and say no.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Now they're more open to it. So, so we started off doing it like that with, uh, entities, uh, permit agencies. We are now the ones that permit for the county. We just recently took that over in July, so we actually handle the county permit, and we are actually working on, um-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … updating it as well as creating an incentive package that goes with that.

Scott Hammond: Cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And, um, but, you know, during COVID-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … nobody could pull a permit without going through our office. So even though we weren't the ones to execute the permit-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … uh, both health departments, Humboldt and Del Norte, said, "Well, in order for anybody to come in, you have to follow the state's white paper of filming with COVID in, in, during COVID times-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … in the state," and then, um, we had to be the gatekeepers. So we had to have-

Scott Hammond: Gotcha

Cassandra Hesseltine: … the whole protocol and checklist, and nobody could-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … pull a permit anywhere without us saying it was okay for them to do that.

Scott Hammond: Feel the power.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes. It was terrifying. I didn't want that. I couldn't sleep at night.

Scott Hammond: So I wanna hear all the names and all the movie stars, but before we do that, if you're just joining us, I'm here, Scott Hammond, with 100% Humboldt podcast with my new best friend, Cassandra Ha- Hesseltine-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … with… Who is the film commissioner liaison.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Sure.

Scott Hammond: So s- is it, is it three words?

Cassandra Hesseltine: No.

Scott Hammond: Or just two?

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's Humboldt Del Norte Film Commissioner.

Scott Hammond: Thank you.

Cassandra Hesseltine: You're welcome.

Scott Hammond: Thank you. Appreciate that.

Cassandra Hesseltine: You're welcome.

Scott Hammond: So I love the fact that this, kind of the dream job, 'cause th- this is a win, win, win, win, win. It brings it all in. We all win when people come from-

Cassandra Hesseltine: For the most part

Scott Hammond: … Ford, Ford Motor Company and film something in Shelter Cove or on some cliff somewhere.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: It brings money to the county, right?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Love that. So, uh, walk me through one that, that did that, that, where it was, uh, uh, the win, win, win, win, win. I don't know, Leo or whoever, like a production or a commercial or something happened that was a, a cool thing for the county.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Well, I mean, they all are cool in the sense of when they come, they do bring in outside dollars, right? So, and for every dollar they f- they spend, it really feels more like

Cassandra Hesseltine: $2.95.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So it's about $3. So if they spend a million, it's like three million before the money leaves the

Cassandra Hesseltine: area.

Scott Hammond: That's a good conversion.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So that's a really amazing, you know, uh, stimulus to the economy. It's temporary jobs.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Whether it's casting, catering, driving, you know, there's all of that part. There is the emotional component of being part of something, like Return of the Jedi. There's a lot of people still alive and, and living in Crescent City that remember what it was like to have them there filming, and now they get to celebrate for 40 years

Cassandra Hesseltine: plus-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … of being part of this huge legacy. So there's the quality of life that it brings. They know now that-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … film tourism does that, but just even being part of the original filming and being part of the community that gets to, um, you know- You know, uh, celebrate that and brag about that, bragging rights, right? So there's so much that it d- every single project does that, um, whether it is a car commercial, reality TV, a indie feature film, studio film. They've all, you know, um, had their impact differently. And, you know, we are very careful. You know, I'm sure someone listening might say, "Well, what about the environmental impact?" Well, I came here thinking I was gonna be an environmental studies major,

Cassandra Hesseltine: and so-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … that's important to me, and so is-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … it is to the stewards of the, of the parks and all the

Cassandra Hesseltine: areas that-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … can be permitted. So though we've had one shoot that, maybe two, two in 15 years that I would say, "Oh, had a, had an accident," you know-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … had something go wrong, they did have to clean it up, they did have to fix it, and nothing major had happened that-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Cassandra Hesseltine: … I'm aware of. Um, so I would say that most productions, especially around 2000, green became a, a popular word in Hollywood.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And so-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Cassandra Hesseltine: … they, they want their productions to be green and not h- you know, destroy, uh, the environment. And state parks have told me that actually less happens when a production films there than when regular tourists. They, they actually trample and leave trash worse than a production does-

Scott Hammond: Right

Cassandra Hesseltine: … usually.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So not to say we don't have our anomalies-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … but for the most part, I do feel really good about how they treat the community

Cassandra Hesseltine: and come in.

Scott Hammond: So, uh, my comment is it would be minuscule compared to logging or, or growers that have raped the lands over the last decades or centuries.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I mean, y-

Scott Hammond: I mean, it's, it's gotta be minuscule.

Cassandra Hesseltine: What I can i-

Scott Hammond: And, and we clean it up.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Sure. What I can i- You get fined if you don't. There's a lot to it.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So my guess, without seeing, you know, stats in front of me and knowing, you know, case-by-case studies, um, I, uh, my educated guess would be sure.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Sure. I wanna guess-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … yes.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I mean, I don't wanna talk bad about another industry, and especially not having, you know, all of that in front of me. I try to, you know.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: But, but sure.

Scott Hammond: You can, you can-

Cassandra Hesseltine: That's what I would think

Scott Hammond: … I, I brought it forward. Growers, you've raped things. Loggers, you've done the same. Make it right. So some, some people are doing that, and, and God bless them. Moving on.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Thanks, Scott. Where did that come from, dude? Tell me about the storefront thing. Tell me all about… 'Cause I gotta go-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh

Scott Hammond: … check that out. I walked by it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: The museum.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, the museum.

Cassandra Hesseltine: The Museum of Cinema. So we started getting, uh, products from people, like… Not products, what am I saying? Um, props from people, like the boat from Swiss Army Man with Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe. Uh, it's a sailboat that Paul Dano gets m- uh, marooned on an island with, and he's used it for shelter. It shows up in the movie maybe a minute, probably less, and but the boat was hauled down to the beach, you know, and brought back and all that. And so one of my interns at the time thought maybe the Film Commission would want the boat, so it was donated to us. So it's this sailboat that's about the size of this table, and then we got another boat. We got a s- the smaller, it was cut in half. It was part of the boat from Bird Box with Sandra Bullock and then-

Scott Hammond: Oh, nice.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. Now we have a fake log from a Jesse Eisenberg movie that looks like a real redwood, but it's not.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And so we… And we got, you know, cannabis from the Woodshock, the Kirsten Dunst movie. Fake cannabis. It's really oregano or whatever. And yeah, it's funny. Uh, we have to be careful.

Scott Hammond: We have fake cannabis-

Cassandra Hesseltine: We do

Scott Hammond: … in a museum.

Cassandra Hesseltine: We do. Um, I know. It is, yeah, isn't that weird?

Scott Hammond: There's dispensaries all around you where you could go see the real thing.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, but this is called art, Scott.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: This is art.

Scott Hammond: This is art.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So, uh, which I failed to mention that, how I really probably partially got into this industry is my Uncle Don, uh, my great Uncle Don was a famous set designer, art director. He worked for Norman Lear and did all the TV shows-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … '70s and '80s. So Who's the Boss?, Three's Company, The Jefferson-

Scott Hammond: Mary Hartman?

Cassandra Hesseltine: I don't know. Let me s- Wait.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Who's the Boss?, Three's Company, The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time.

Scott Hammond: Those are huge.

Cassandra Hesseltine: All in the Family. All… He just, I have his first sketch of the All in the Family

Cassandra Hesseltine: chair. Um-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … yeah, all of those TV sh- Married With Children. I went to the set of Married With Children.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um-

Scott Hammond: Were these all in Burbank? Where, where were these filmed, in the Valley?

Cassandra Hesseltine: I don't remember where I went. Probably. I was, like, 17 when I went to-

Scott Hammond: Studios are not all in Hollywood proper, right?

Scott Hammond: They're-

Cassandra Hesseltine: No, no, more like Burbank. Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: They're all over.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I mean, they're all over. I used to live by Sony, which is by Culver City.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So MGM used, used to be the old MGM, so that's-

Scott Hammond: So nice to have a Burbank flight on Avilo, you can go direct.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It is. It is. I do that, or I go to LAX for my parents.

Scott Hammond: Have you-

Cassandra Hesseltine: But either way

Scott Hammond: … have you been back since the fires?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh, no. I was there right before the fires, like the week before.

Scott Hammond: Oh, crazy.

Cassandra Hesseltine: But I am probably gonna go down in April.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, but my, actually my brother's house/dad's house burned down.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Where was that?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, that was the Altadena-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … one. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Rad.

Scott Hammond: Sad.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So, uh, is the m- does the museum cost, or can you just cruise in?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, no.

Scott Hammond: Donation?

Cassandra Hesseltine: We're back there. Yeah, you switched gears on me.

Scott Hammond: Sorry.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um-

Scott Hammond: Break, break

Cassandra Hesseltine: … the museum is, uh, no, it's free. It's donation. Um, and it's, right now we're doing a women in film exhibit, which is time leaf, because March, I believe, uh, is the, the women month.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Is that, is that true? Yes. And, uh, and we also have some of the key pieces that are too big to put away. So those are in the entrance-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and then you can take a picture on the red carpet. And then we have the exhibit.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And we have a little store, and then we're behind that. We're, we have, like, fake walls.

Scott Hammond: You're there.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Currently. We're trying to get some, um… move back to our desks in real offices and expand the museum.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … if we have any, um, people who wanna s- help us out with that, please, you

Cassandra Hesseltine: know.

Scott Hammond: How do we get ahold of you guys there?

Scott Hammond: Go ahead.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, sure.

Scott Hammond: Call it out.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes. Yes. There is, we have our website, which basically Google, Scott. You could just Google-

Scott Hammond: Oh, you could Google it

Cassandra Hesseltine: … Humboldt Film Commission, uh, Humboldt Del Norte Film Commission. You could Hum- you could Google Del Norte Film… Either, any of those combos. Um, or you can find us at hdnfc.org, which is HumboldtDel NorteFilmCommission.org.

Scott Hammond: Or Google it. Can we lia- liaise there when we, we get there?

Scott Hammond: Sorry.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Jeez. Oh my God.

Scott Hammond: That's- That'd be kinda cute.

Cassandra Hesseltine: We're on Facebook. We're on Instagram. We have a YouTube channel.

Scott Hammond: TikTok?

Cassandra Hesseltine: We are currently not on TikTok, and that's n- no political reasons or anything.

Scott Hammond: It's not, yeah. It's fine.

Cassandra Hesseltine: We're just not on TikTok. It just-

Scott Hammond: It's all good

Cassandra Hesseltine: … you know, we're two and a half people, and it's very time-consuming-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … to do… We have an app, we have the museum-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … we have the map, we have the Forest Moon Fesitval. We just did a red carpet gala. We do red carpet events when movies come out that filmed in the area.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: We have six interns, and we help productions when they're, um, inquiries and calling, and I'm vice president of all the film commissioners in California. So-

Scott Hammond: Wow. Other than that-

Cassandra Hesseltine: … two and a half people do all that, so we don't have-

Scott Hammond: Other than that, nothing going on

Cassandra Hesseltine: … we don't do… We don't have time for TikTok.

Scott Hammond: So forget TikTok. There's more things happening. So the app and the map, talk about-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm

Scott Hammond: … that for a second. So is that… I don't know what that is. T- tell me. Is that, we go around and look at-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes

Scott Hammond: … old film sites like-

Cassandra Hesseltine: So the app is called the Redwood Coast Film Experience app, and basically it's all things that we do that-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … uh, somebody w- might be interested in for film experience.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So when you open it up, it takes you to, you can go to the Forest Moon Festival and find out what's going on with that.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Right now if you go to the map, I mean, if you go to the app, um, it's last year's content 'cause we're just about to switch that over to this year's content.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, but it does have the updated map right now. So the map takes you to, it's a, it's a self-guided interactive map where you can go and see where Productions Film, see a, h- read a little blurb about it. We have the IMDb link, uh, the trailer link-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Cassandra Hesseltine: … the poster, all of that, so you can go see in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. And then there's the museum part on the app, which lets you know current exhibits, you can book an appointment,

Cassandra Hesseltine: tells you-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … our times and yeah.

Scott Hammond: It's got it all.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, it's a film experience.

Scott Hammond: So imagine that. So the map, i- is that the map where I could go

Scott Hammond: to see where so and so, such and so is filmed?

Scott Hammond: Like-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Correct. Like s-

Scott Hammond: Like Ferndale?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes, like Outbreak. If you wanted to-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … know where it was filmed and know more information about it, you look on the

Cassandra Hesseltine: map-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and you find it.

Scott Hammond: That's cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: We also added restaurants and hotels that are near there. So if you wanted to-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Cassandra Hesseltine: … know, "Where can I stay? I love that movie so much."

Scott Hammond: Uh-huh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: "I wanna know…" You know, so we, we're trying to help build the economy, you know-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Cassandra Hesseltine: … another way that we are promoting the area.

Scott Hammond: I love that.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: That's really cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: So it's all f- uh, I love it. Synergistic is the word I was thinking.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: There it is.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So you can find the Redwood Coast Film Experience app both for Android and, and the iPhone. And again, you know, we, two and a half people, so we're, we're constantly trying to catch up on the updating of the things, but-

Scott Hammond: Hey, I just got it on my phone.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, look at that. That was so quick.

Scott Hammond: That was quick.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Wow.

Scott Hammond: Oh, how'd you do that?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Scott Hammond: Google. Google.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, geez.

Scott Hammond: Oh, geez. So let's go back to your, um, Sunday night Oscar event that you did last Sunday.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Red carpet gala? Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: How many of those have you done? I mean, how many have been done?

Cassandra Hesseltine: 10 plus.

Scott Hammond: That's a big deal, right?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: How'd this one go? 'Cause I know it rained and was it sold out?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah, no, we… Yeah, yeah, it did really well.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Well-

Scott Hammond: I wanted, I wanted to go really bad.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, you should have came.

Scott Hammond: I just kind of… I was in my jammies and-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Could've came in your jammies

Scott Hammond: … you came anyway.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I think we've actually had someone come in their jammies before.

Scott Hammond: No, that's WinCo.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Geez. Well, they won't be a sponsor.

Scott Hammond: Right?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Will they?

Scott Hammond: 3:000 AM at WinCo or Walmart, sorry.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Ooh.

Scott Hammond: My bad.

Cassandra Hesseltine: No.

Scott Hammond: I got 'em confused.

Cassandra Hesseltine: No.

Scott Hammond: No, I didn't. So oh, this is too much fun.

Scott Hammond: So-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm

Scott Hammond: … h- did it all go well?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, yeah. I forgot what we were talking about.

Scott Hammond: And what, what's, what's the ev- yeah, break, break. So we're back to your, your gala.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So how… What is it all about? So f- somebody wanted to go next year-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … Oscar night, um-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh, first part that happens is you get to walk the red carpet. We have a professional photographer.

Cassandra Hesseltine: You know-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … people dress either down to the nines, or they show up… We have people show up in, you know, whatever's convenient or-

Scott Hammond: Jammies

Cassandra Hesseltine: … or we've actually had that. Um, people also have showed up, like last year we had someone dress up as Barbie, who was fantastic.

Scott Hammond: Sweet.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Astronaut Barbie. It was amazing. And so we've had people show up as characters, and then when you come in, you know, they have, um, it's the art deco historical Eureka Theatre-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and they've been doing a lot to refurbish it and-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Cassandra Hesseltine: … it's really getting fancy and fun.

Scott Hammond: That's cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um-

Scott Hammond: You guys are sort of involved in that a little bit too?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Well, I, I'm on the board. I have-

Scott Hammond: You're on the board

Cassandra Hesseltine: … yeah, on the board. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Is Greg still on the board?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Greg is president, and he's rocking it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Greg Foster.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Greg Foster.

Scott Hammond: Hey, Greg. W- shout out to Greg Foster.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: What's up?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Foster. Um, so then we have, this year what we did is we have the downstairs lobby where you can purchase your drinks, and we give away free popcorn, and then in the theater there is, uh, tables that you can purchase for VIP and, uh, with a ch- cutlery board and get-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … some service, um, bar service, or there is also a buffet style table that comes with any tickets.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh, and then there was, um, cocktail tables around so that you could either sit or stand around at the cocktail tables. And then we opened up the upstairs lobby. This is the first time we've ever done that.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Had a bartender up there, and then, uh, we actually had the secret hidden door open to the apartment. There's a three-bedroom, really cool

Cassandra Hesseltine: apartment-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Cassandra Hesseltine: … that's up there, and we had a piano player up there, the Academy Awards playing

Cassandra Hesseltine: up there.

Scott Hammond: The secret door.

Cassandra Hesseltine: The secret door.

Scott Hammond: Sounds like a movie.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And so you had to have VIP tickets for that. Downstairs we also showcase, um, all the trophies for the people who won the Community Awards. So we do film-friendly community awards, and on the screen during commercial breaks, um, we either have RLA Trio playing-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … some beautiful music or, and/or we show, um, videos of who won the awards in the community for helping us be-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Cassandra Hesseltine: … film friendly for the past year's worth of filming.

Scott Hammond: We know that's a lot of commercial breaks. So you actually air the entire Oscar show? Is it, do I have that right?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh-huh. Yes, yes.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: So that's a four-hour, three-and-a-half, four-hour-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes, it's a long, it's a long event.

Scott Hammond: It's a production.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It is a production, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So, um, so the, the tickets are all for the, the, the party version, and then we air the, uh, show per ABC as a free bonus.

Scott Hammond: That's super. 25 bucks to show up, that's, like, that's a bargain.

Cassandra Hesseltine: That's the… Yeah, it is the bargain. We wanted to make it sure that it was, you know, uh, approachable by, you know, college students.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Make it a little bit more-

Scott Hammond: Love it

Cassandra Hesseltine: … you know, yeah, easier to access. And then, um, the v- VIP were more like $45,

Cassandra Hesseltine: so.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Still a bargain.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Less than a concert

Cassandra Hesseltine: I agree. I agree. I concur, especially-

Scott Hammond: Do you con… Oh, you're concurring now.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I concur. Well, I go to, I go to a lot of concerts, and my, my concert seats can be expensive-

Scott Hammond: Really?

Cassandra Hesseltine: … especially if it's Depeche Mode.

Scott Hammond: So let's go with the concert talk.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, good.

Scott Hammond: 'Cause, 'cause it's on.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Now I'm happy.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. So, um, Jodi and I go to the Britt Festival up in Jacksonville,

Scott Hammond: Oregon.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Scott Hammond: Last 10 years.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Okay.

Scott Hammond: We've seen Jackson Browne, The Decemberists. We've seen Stephen Stills. Judy Collins,

Scott Hammond: magical.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Okay.

Scott Hammond: She's got… 80 years old, she still has-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Ooh

Scott Hammond: … the pipes.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Ooh.

Scott Hammond: Uh, Australian Pink Floyd. I'm just gonna drop names, but I'll tell you about, um, another show in a minute. So actually, for actors, we've seen, uh, Keanu Reeves in Dogstar, his

Scott Hammond: band.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Scott Hammond: Didn't say two words.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, he, he, he-

Scott Hammond: He's great

Cassandra Hesseltine: … apologized to me for cussing by accident in front of me. He was so sweet.

Scott Hammond: He's a sweetheart.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, he… No, he's so nice.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: We saw Johnny Depp in a band called The Hollywood Vampires.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Scott Hammond: Really good. Alice Cooper.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I have a Johnny Depp story.

Scott Hammond: And who's the guitar… Yeah, I wanna hear it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Hmm.

Scott Hammond: Who's the guitar player for Aerosmith?

Scott Hammond: Joe? Ah. Anyway, these guys were wonderful. Alice Cooper told all the stories about the, uh, not the Troubadour, the other bar where John Lennon-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm

Scott Hammond: … and Harry Nilsson and Keith Moon-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm

Scott Hammond: … drank themselves to death and-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh

Scott Hammond: … just the lore of, of rock and roll-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … and Hollywood, and he got sober 45 years ago, so he's, he's doing

Scott Hammond: fine.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Anyway, tell us about your rock and roll, uh, pedigree. Who have you seen? Who's good?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um-

Scott Hammond: Depeche Mode.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I'm a Depeche Mode fanatic, so I saw them five times this last

Cassandra Hesseltine: year.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And I even went to Budapest to see them, and it was utterly amazing.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I had-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … second row, third row, fifth row. I can't remember what other… 10th row.

Scott Hammond: In Budapest?

Cassandra Hesseltine: And then the-

Scott Hammond: Which is in-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Budapest

Scott Hammond: … in Hungary.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, Hungary. So we stayed-

Scott Hammond: You actually flew to Hungary to go see them?

Cassandra Hesseltine: I did. Now, in all fairness to me, a really good friend lives there, and I went out there for a film. Uh, she teaches a film class, and I went to the studio, the Budapest Studio, as well as, um, met some other filmmakers at some

Cassandra Hesseltine: events. Um-

Scott Hammond: Cool

Cassandra Hesseltine: … so it was a film friend visit.

Scott Hammond: And they happened to be playing.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And they just happened to be there.

Scott Hammond: Oh. Weird, right?

Cassandra Hesseltine: I know.

Scott Hammond: What a show.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It was amazing.

Scott Hammond: How much were seats?

Cassandra Hesseltine: I don't remember. They… It was, like, in Budapest dollars. Uh, I forget what it is, you know.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh-

Scott Hammond: Which is af- pretty affordable, I understand.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It, it's actually… Yeah.

Scott Hammond: If you're gonna go to Europe, I-

Cassandra Hesseltine: It is

Scott Hammond: … Hungary and Croatia are supposed to be amazing.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes, yes. I ended up going to Vienna, uh, and Budapest, and it was, it was utterly amazing.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Vienna would be cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, it's incredible. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: The gem of Europe or something. I forget what it's called.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, it's incredible. But I did get to see Depeche Mode then, yes. So I'm a huge '80s fan. Um, obviously I like other, like, house and contemporary music, and I like all kinds of music.

Scott Hammond: Who have you seen that you really liked that was memorable?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh, Flea with Mack.

Scott Hammond: Cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, Flea with Mack. Um-

Scott Hammond: The original Flea lineup?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Cassandra Hesseltine: About five, five, six years ago, somewhere in there.

Scott Hammond: Cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: They all, they got back together. Um, I've seen Stevie Nicks, I think, two or three times now. I just saw her, like, last year. Um, I saw New Order, Pet Shop Boys, um, Duran Duran, The Cure. The Cure was really good.

Scott Hammond: Cure'd be cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: You're definitely a '80s girl.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And then-

Scott Hammond: Oh, yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … oh, yeah. Who else did I see?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um-

Scott Hammond: You ever see The Stones?

Cassandra Hesseltine: The Doobie Brothers.

Scott Hammond: The Doobies? Cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: They are so good.

Scott Hammond: They're great.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: They used to have Michael McDonald for a couple records.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: It's quite good.

Cassandra Hesseltine: But just regular Doobie Brothers.

Scott Hammond: Oh, they're great.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Oh, I'd love to see them.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So good.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Doobies are cool. What-

Cassandra Hesseltine: But, uh, yeah

Scott Hammond: … how about The Stones?

Cassandra Hesseltine: No, I've never seen them.

Scott Hammond: Now there's a production.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Actually, Taylor Swift has a production, but they are.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: The Stones would be fun.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I re- I wanna see, um, like… I'm into other music now, like, more, like, house DJs, and that would be more my modern style now. I mean, I go to Burning Man, so.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm. Oh, oh, Burning… That tells us a lot. Burning Man? Well, tell us more.

Scott Hammond: Dwayne Flap-

Cassandra Hesseltine: What, what happens at Burning Man stays at Burning Man.

Scott Hammond: That's what Dwayne Flatmo said, yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: What a nice-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, I, I see him every year at Burning Man

Scott Hammond: … what a nice guy.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I know. I love him.

Scott Hammond: What a sweet, sweet-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Him and, and the guys, I see them all every year there.

Scott Hammond: They're cool guys. Yeah, no, he's, he's really funny.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I'm mayor of the astronomy camp. I hang out with people who, like, worked at CERN or helped take the first picture of a black hole or-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … you know, worked on the James Webb telescope and all that stuff, so.

Scott Hammond: Wait, wait. Over at Burning Man or just somewhere, somewhere else?

Cassandra Hesseltine: These people all, in their day job, and we all camp together, and I'm mayor of that camp.

Scott Hammond: Oh, that's cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Do you guys have telescopes and stuff?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, yeah. We have a big dome, and we bring out telescopes, and we show-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … people, you know, planets.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And then we have a solar scope too, so we can show the sun, and-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … we do talks, and, and these people are like… I think we have something like 14 PhDs at the camp, and-

Scott Hammond: Whoa

Cassandra Hesseltine: … yeah, yeah. Nerd Central.

Scott Hammond: That'd be fun.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's super rad. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: That sounds like really fun.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. And I throw Space Pants Space Dance.

Scott Hammond: Tell us… Well, I can't, can't leave that one alone. Tell us, tell us more.

Cassandra Hesseltine: You have to wear space pants, pants that have space on them.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Space Pants Space Dance at the astronomy camp.

Scott Hammond: Are they alum- like, alum- aluminum foil-ish?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Whatever you want.

Scott Hammond: So they could just be space jammies.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Whatever you want.

Scott Hammond: Okay. It's Burning Man. I guess whatever thing goes.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Or, uh-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … never been to one. There you go. Maybe, could I, could I-

Cassandra Hesseltine: There's all kinds of camps

Scott Hammond: … could I go, Nick? Fit right in, Scott. Have fun. Knock yourself out, dude. And then they burn the Burning Man at the end.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes. They burn the man.

Scott Hammond: He's the man.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes, they burn the man, and the temple. My favorite is the temple. So the temple is this beautiful building that's always incredible art piece, and they burn that the day after, and that's where up until they burn it, you can go in there and leave a little memorial. You can write a name.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, you could do a picture. People leave flowers. They leave items. And it's, um-

Scott Hammond: So it's spiritual

Cassandra Hesseltine: … of, of anything, yeah, cats, dogs, your p- people that you know, whatever.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And usually, you know, any time I've gone, there's always been a couple hundred people that are in there any time of the day that are-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … sometimes meditating, singing, crying, you know, just going around feeling it, you know?

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's a, it is an incredible experience.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And, um-

Scott Hammond: I've never heard of this. This is cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, yeah, the temple is incredible. So then when that burns… So, you know, when the man burns, it's kind of a party, but the next day when the temple burns, um, everybody's quiet, and you sit

Cassandra Hesseltine: around the-

Scott Hammond: Whole different

Cassandra Hesseltine: … perimeter. It's a whole different experience.

Scott Hammond: Uh-huh.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And I, one year, t- a couple years ago, a guy brought his cello and just started playing it while this thing was burning down, and everybody's hearts are in there.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's, it's-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … so incredibly epic. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: I like that.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's an experience, definitely. Yeah. And, and Burning Man, you know, people say, "Oh, it's, it's this or it's that," you know? Well, A, if you've never been, shut up. And B, it is what you want it to be. It's, it… That's, you know, if you want it to be a party, that's what it is. If you want it to be-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … art and community, then that's what it is, you know?

Scott Hammond: I like that.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: That's cool. Yeah, and we, uh, we just go over the border to Brit, which is really fun. It's like three and a half hours.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And they get gr- top grade A everything.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Steve Martin to, back in the day, Willie Nelson played there, and-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, I saw-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Cassandra Hesseltine: … Willie's free concert. It wasn't that great.

Scott Hammond: Really? Was-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Back when he owed taxes. Just never see a free concert.

Scott Hammond: Really? The free shows, yeah, I remember. Growing up in San Diego, they, KGB Radio used to do-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … a free concert at the stadium.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So it was fun.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: So t- let, let's talk movies, uh, real quick before we talk about your legacy. And, uh, oh, let's do the quiz show. Sorry, got ahead of myself.

Cassandra Hesseltine: What is happening?

Scott Hammond: Quiz show.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Are you having a stroke? What's going on?

Scott Hammond: I'm okay. Just a little ADD. Look, squirrel.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, where?

Scott Hammond: So-

Scott Hammond: … uh, Cassandra.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Hmm.

Scott Hammond: For all the money.

Cassandra Hesseltine: All the money.

Scott Hammond: You get a whole day in Humboldt to do whatever the heck you

Scott Hammond: want.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Hmm.

Scott Hammond: Unlimited budget. Starts at 9:00, ends at 9:00, 12 hours, go. What do you do?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Buy everybody everything that they need.

Scott Hammond: Okay. That's a great answer.

Scott Hammond: Everybody?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Every… You said in Humboldt, so buy everybody everything that they need.

Scott Hammond: Okay. So we-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Right? So that everybody would be taken care of in Humboldt County.

Scott Hammond: You would be a provider for ni- 12 hours.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, easy.

Scott Hammond: I like it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: That'd be the first five minutes.

Scott Hammond: Boy, the logistics would be tough.

Cassandra Hesseltine: No.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: No, I'm, I-

Scott Hammond: It's just be Visa cards.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I just got an A, 99.91% by the way, uh, in project managing for, at MIT.

Scott Hammond: Really?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Like remote?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. Online course at night.

Scott Hammond: So you can get shit done.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Oh, nice, and you're d- 99 point what?

Cassandra Hesseltine: 99.91. I forgot to comment on someone else's thing, and you, so I got two points deducted. Would've got 100%.

Scott Hammond: So it's like an A+.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And I couldn't believe it that people actually didn't get… Other people, you know, like if 12 points was the score, the highest you could get, other people actually got six on an assignment. They show you, and I couldn't comprehend that.

Scott Hammond: Oh, okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It seemed easy. It was easy enough. You could do it, all the things.

Scott Hammond: Project manage. Wow, I, I love that, 'cause that's-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Project manage my project manage class

Scott Hammond: … break it down and do it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Question number two.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Ooh.

Scott Hammond: Break this one down. Ready?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Okay.

Scott Hammond: Favorite cup of coffee, where do you go?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh,

Cassandra Hesseltine: my house.

Scott Hammond: Can't say your hou- Well, you can say anything you want.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Ah.

Scott Hammond: You said provide for all the needs in 12 hours, so.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, I said my house. I actually… Do you realize that I used to own a coffee house?

Scott Hammond: I didn't know that.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I had Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe.

Scott Hammond: Oh, yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So my favorite cup of coffee used to be there.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um, I-

Scott Hammond: Where was that at?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh, F and Fifth. Not… Yeah, Fifth and F, but it sounds like F and Fifth like I'm saying it.

Scott Hammond: F and Fifth. Oh, yeah, yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So, um, I had that for five years there, um, with my former partner, and I, that was my favorite coffee. Um, but, so my house. Uh, but there's, you know, all the coffee houses are good around here.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm. They are good.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. We're next, we're by Old Town Coffee & Chocolates, a couple doors down. There's, they're always fun to go down to.

Scott Hammond: They're delicious, yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: There's plenty of amazing coffee houses.

Scott Hammond: Here's a tough one.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh.

Scott Hammond: Number three. For all the money.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I'm scared. Um-

Scott Hammond: Lunch in Old Town, where do you go?

Cassandra Hesseltine: You're evil.

Scott Hammond: I like that. I am. I have evil in me.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh-

Scott Hammond: That's right. I'm trying to get rid of it

Cassandra Hesseltine: … I think actually I bring my own food. Um, but if I go for a work lunch-

Scott Hammond: Work lunch

Cassandra Hesseltine: … I mean, you know, all the places are good around there. Um, one of my favorite though, I'm, I'm a sucker for the Orchid Thai or Thai Orchid, the green curry.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's not in Old Town, but

Cassandra Hesseltine: I love it.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, that's good.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I'm a sucker for it.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, that's delicious. I've eat there. That's good. Okay. Well, you win the prize. I'll get… Here, let me just get it to you right now. Ready? Coffee.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, I didn't even see the… Oh.

Scott Hammond: Brought to you by Dutch Brothers.

Cassandra Hesseltine: The subliminal message that I did not see.

Scott Hammond: Dutch Brothers started on every corner of Medford, Oregon.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I will tell you, my dad loves Dutch Brothers. Every time he comes here, this is where he likes to go.

Scott Hammond: Here's the deal with Dutch. There's three of them in Humboldt. The cool thing about this-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm

Scott Hammond: … is there's one in Santa Rosa. You know what the biggest deal at all of Santa Rosa is? Y'all, 'cause it's, it's j-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Well, I have a s-

Scott Hammond: … it's like in demand. It's like a trade or trip.

Cassandra Hesseltine: I have a Santa Rosa trip, so-

Scott Hammond: There you go. It's right on the highway somewhere

Cassandra Hesseltine: … I'll save it for that.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, you could do that. So yeah, winner, winner, chicken dinner. So real quick but real slow, 'cause we have a little bit of time.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Tell me, l- let's, let's arc some of the films that have, and the f- the filming that's been done here. And drop names and do the fun stuff, 'cause I think people would like to hear, um… By the way, if you're just joining us after way into the show, this is my friend Cassandra. With the De- Humboldt Del Norte Film Commissioner- …

Scott Hammond: Commission. We'll get it right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Google it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Google it. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So, um, tell me more about, uh, some of the stories. So Chris Farley was here before he died, filmed up on Trinity somewhere in

Scott Hammond: some movie.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Heard about that.

Cassandra Hesseltine: We don't really talk about that movie, that movie's not that PC anymore.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Kinda, you know.

Scott Hammond: It wasn't that great a movie?

Scott Hammond: Okay. Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: It has a name. What's the name?

Cassandra Hesseltine: I can't… Uh.

Scott Hammond: You, you could.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Let me remember right now. I, like, put that one in the-

Scott Hammond: So it's not a-

Cassandra Hesseltine: … back of the brain

Scott Hammond: … not a great movie, okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Well, it's not that it's not a great movie, it's just not ap- what we would consider appropriate anymore.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It's a couple white guys m- doing comedy through a Native American area. It's kind of not-

Scott Hammond: Kind of crazy stuff, yeah.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, moving on.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Exactly.

Scott Hammond: Outbreak. Now let's move on to Outbreak.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Please, please change the subject.

Scott Hammond: Let's get Ferndale, where we're breaking out in, in deadly, deadly pandemic diseases.

Cassandra Hesseltine: D- ah, the anniversary was, uh, I think it was the 25th anniversary, was during the pandemic. It was a good time.

Scott Hammond: Isn't that funny?

Cassandra Hesseltine: Literally March of 2020 was, like, a big anniversary-

Scott Hammond: Right

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and we couldn't advertise that, 'cause we were like, "Oh, look at-"

Scott Hammond: This would've been perfect

Cassandra Hesseltine: … life imitating art. Um-

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, it was amazing, so.

Scott Hammond: I think I read that at the time.

Cassandra Hesseltine: But all of those, I want you to, I wanna remind you, um, uh, happened

Cassandra Hesseltine: before me.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: Let's talk about those, but we'll get to yours.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Okay, I'm just making sure I've been, I can't tell you stories.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, no, 'cause you're only, like-

Cassandra Hesseltine: A baby

Scott Hammond: … 35 or so.

Cassandra Hesseltine: 19.

Scott Hammond: Depeche Mode. They… How old are those guys now?

Scott Hammond: They must-

Cassandra Hesseltine: Young.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, very young.

Cassandra Hesseltine: You watch your tone.

Scott Hammond: It was, it was the, the Walkers that gave it away. Sorry. Just playing. So you'll never work here again, Scott.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: Um, so we had Outbreak. We, our, our n- neighbor Larry was an extra in that. He was a cop that dressed up in a uniform. Dustin Hoffman starred.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yes.

Scott Hammond: What else? Jim Carrey was in that one, The Majestic, right, in Ferndale?

Cassandra Hesseltine: The Majestic, yes. Um-

Scott Hammond: So Ferndale was scoring a couple of big flicks back then.

Cassandra Hesseltine: They did, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Go Ferndale. Hey, we love Ferndale.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah. Um, Del Norte had E.T.

Scott Hammond: That's… How is E.T. up there?

Scott Hammond: Was it-

Cassandra Hesseltine: The, all the tree stuff, yeah, 'cause the-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Cassandra Hesseltine: … the houses were down in LA, but all the tree, and you think about the treescape and the, the bicycle.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Del Norte.

Scott Hammond: That's gotta be somewhere not-

Cassandra Hesseltine: That, that was Del Norte

Scott Hammond: … that ain't Burbank or Pasadena.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Right. Right, exactly. So, um, yeah, we got that. We had, uh, Johnny Depp's Dead Man.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yep, very artsy-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … movie that took place on the Klamath River.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Uh-

Scott Hammond: He was up here for a bit.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yep. Uh, as we mentioned, we, um, had Return of the Jedi. We've had Jezebel's Kiss.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Um-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Jurassic Park.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Oh, yeah, Jurassic Park.

Scott Hammond: At Sumeg Park, formerly known as Patrick's Point State Park.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, and actually the, the biggest part was Fern Canyon, so where they brought a dinosaur going down in Fern Canyon.

Scott Hammond: Right. Right.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So that was exciting. And then, uh, let's see, what else did we have that was exciting? Well, our first movie was in 1916, and that starred Helen Holmes, and she was a pioneer back then.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: She's actually in our current museum-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Cassandra Hesseltine: … uh, exhibit of the women in film. And she, she was married to the director, so she didn't direct it, but she, uh, did all her own stunts, including running on the top of the train and, like, with guns a-blazing.

Scott Hammond: Crazy.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And she was saving men. There's a picture of her saving a guy tied to, uh, railroad tracks, when normally it was the other way around.

Scott Hammond: Whoa.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So.

Scott Hammond: Was she local, or did they just film here?

Cassandra Hesseltine: No, no.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: She came from H- Hollywood. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Wow. Okay.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah, so she's, she was in our first movie ever, and she was a big pioneer, so we feature her in the museum.

Scott Hammond: That's cool.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: I like that. So how, how do you wanna be remembered? What's your legacy? What's it say on your s- your tombstone?

Cassandra Hesseltine: The shoebox theory. That's what I want. I, I wro- I came up with a theory, and I'm writing a book, and that's what I wanna be remembered for.

Scott Hammond: Okay. That's your book.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Okay. Is… It's not, you can't Google it yet.

Cassandra Hesseltine: You can't Google it yet.

Scott Hammond: Oh, God.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: If we told you about it, we'd have to kill you again.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Well, hey.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Well, it's about meeting in the middle, and it's about that relationships are like a shoebox, that there is a, a f- a bottom, a top, sides, and meeting in the middle, and when you walk to the middle, if you picture yourself on one end and someone else or something else on the other end-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … you fill up space. And so that's status quo, and when you're off-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Cassandra Hesseltine: … and things aren't right, how do you get back on?

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: So it's about… It t- it's elevator… In, in the time it takes you to ride an elevator, like elevator speeches, right? It's elevator therapy. You could figure out a problem, at least the, the basics to it.

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: It doesn't blame anybody.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Cassandra Hesseltine: And you can figure out where do you wanna go and what maybe you could do different in that, that timeframe.

Scott Hammond: Process.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Love it.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Wow. Hey, thanks for being here.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Thanks for having me.

Scott Hammond: Pretty fun.

Cassandra Hesseltine: Good.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Did you have fun?

Cassandra Hesseltine: I had fun.
