Scott Hammond: Welcome to the 100% Humboldt podcast with your new best friend, Scott Hammond, and my new best friend, Becky Giacomini. Hi Gi- hi, Becky.

Becky Giacomini: Hi, Scott. Best friend, I like that.

Scott Hammond: New best friend.

Becky Giacomini: Oh. Oh-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … sorry, new.

Scott Hammond: We'll see, we'll see.

Becky Giacomini: At the end, we'll see if we're new best friends-

Scott Hammond: We'll see

Becky Giacomini: … or friends.

Scott Hammond: So Becky, tell us your story. Where'd you come from? What's your deal? Where you going, and-

Becky Giacomini: Where, hmm

Scott Hammond: … I know Southern California. You said Claremont, right?

Becky Giacomini: Yes. I grew up in Southern California.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: In great little community, Claremont. Has six colleges. Great growing up, you know, everybody, one high school, just a couple elementary schools.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And that was my thing. And, um, yeah, so that's where I- my, my dad l- worked for one of the- uh, worked for all six

Becky Giacomini: colleges.

Scott Hammond: Oh, wow

Becky Giacomini: He was in the, yeah, chancery office.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Becky Giacomini: He was a fundraiser-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … so I guess maybe that's kind of my thing as I go along.

Scott Hammond: You are a fundraiser.

Becky Giacomini: I, yeah, hmm.

Scott Hammond: Amongst other things.

Becky Giacomini: Amongst everything, yes. Yep, yep. So, um, yeah, so then I went to the real Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and that's where-

Scott Hammond: Oh, come now.

Becky Giacomini: Yes. Oh, come now. I can say that-

Scott Hammond: Pom- Pomona is a, is a Cal Poly.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, but, mm, you have to go away to go to college, you know, so.

Scott Hammond: That would not be away from Claremont.

Becky Giacomini: Uh, that would not be. That's just a-

Scott Hammond: So is Claremont set up on the hill, kinda like-

Becky Giacomini: No, it's in the foothills of San Bernardino.

Scott Hammond: Oh, it's-

Becky Giacomini: Like Mount Baldy, that area

Scott Hammond: … so we're that way.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Smogville.

Scott Hammond: So far th- farther than Glendora and Rancho Cucamonga?

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. In between those two.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. It's beautiful.

Becky Giacomini: And there was, you know, now it's all freeways and, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: It's all LA according to my husband, so yeah.

Scott Hammond: It is LA, and it-

Becky Giacomini: Hmm

Scott Hammond: … overlooks, um, the Ontario Airport-

Becky Giacomini: Yes, yes

Scott Hammond: … and that whole part.

Becky Giacomini: Right, right, right.

Scott Hammond: That was all ag, right?

Becky Giacomini: It was all ag. Orange groves, lemon groves, all that.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Now it's freeways and houses and more freeways.

Scott Hammond: So Joni's sister Dana lives there in Glendora.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, okay.

Scott Hammond: And we got to go to the Hun- is it Huntington Park?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yes. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Oh, my gosh.

Becky Giacomini: Passadena and all that area. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Oh, San, uh, Marino.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, yes. You know, the Rose Parade, all that-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Becky Giacomini: … all that area, yeah.

Scott Hammond: And the houses are just these little-

Becky Giacomini: Hmm. Hmm

Scott Hammond: … $10 million dumps.

Becky Giacomini: The… Well- … they don't call them dumps, but they're tiny.

Scott Hammond: Oh, the, the houses are beautiful. So we got, uh, turned around going, going back from Ojai-

Becky Giacomini: Oh

Scott Hammond: … an alternate route up to Altadena to see the-

Becky Giacomini: Ah

Scott Hammond: … the devastation.

Becky Giacomini: Oof.

Scott Hammond: It was just so hardcore to see-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … the, the, the loss.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Well, over the hill, Palisades, that's where my family lived. We lost our family home.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Becky Giacomini: My cousin lost his.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, it, yeah, that's-

Scott Hammond: So what, what got you to Humboldt?

Becky Giacomini: Well, I met this guy.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: He, um, was way out of college, way older than me. I like to say that, but I was- … uh, I was rooming with his brother's girlfriend.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Becky Giacomini: So he came, and he's a Cal Poly alum, and he-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … came down, um, to go to a rodeo, and we met at a rodeo.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Becky Giacomini: My very first rodeo.

Scott Hammond: In S-

Becky Giacomini: In the valley

Scott Hammond: … in SLO?

Becky Giacomini: Well, I, we went over to Caruthers, which I don't know if you know where that is.

Scott Hammond: I've heard-

Becky Giacomini: Fresno, Caruthers.

Scott Hammond: I've heard of Caruthers.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. So that's where we met, but I was going to school, and he had already moved back to Humboldt and was working here.

Scott Hammond: So he's a Cal Poly alum, too?

Becky Giacomini: Yes, yes.

Scott Hammond: His name is Walt?

Becky Giacomini: I think his name is Walt, yes.

Scott Hammond: Is it Walt? Is the same… Oh, same guy.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, same guy.

Scott Hammond: Good to know. Hey, Walt. What's up?

Becky Giacomini: Hey, Walt. So yes, that's where we met, and then I slowly made my way up to Humboldt. Went to CR.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And then I went to Humboldt State.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Becky Giacomini: That's what it was, Humboldt State.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Just kept going to school, uh, after we got married and-

Scott Hammond: What'd you study?

Becky Giacomini: I was studying, um, at Cal Poly, um, food processing,

Becky Giacomini: ag.

Scott Hammond: Oh, okay.

Becky Giacomini: But didn't really know I was gonna m- be marrying an ag cowboy.

Scott Hammond: Uh-huh.

Becky Giacomini: And, uh-

Scott Hammond: So you guys are still dating at that time?

Becky Giacomini: Yep.

Scott Hammond: Courting, what- whatever that-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, courting. That, he says that, so that's-

Scott Hammond: Courting

Becky Giacomini: … uh, yeah.

Scott Hammond: That's a nice… I like courting.

Becky Giacomini: Courting works, so.

Scott Hammond: Courting's got a good ring.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. So Humboldt it was, and, uh, we jumped right into, um, ag, um, the ag community. We grew potatoes when we first got married. He was growing potatoes at the time-

Scott Hammond: How about that?

Becky Giacomini: … for Granny Goose potatoes.

Scott Hammond: Sure.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. We made potato chips.

Scott Hammond: Remember the chips?

Becky Giacomini: Yep. That's what we did.

Scott Hammond: That's a SoCal company, I think.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, and then, um, yeah, we did that for a few years, and then, uh, left. Um, w- he was in partner with his dad doing potatoes, and so then we ended that, and then we moved to Oregon for five years.

Scott Hammond: Where'd you grow taters, Rio Dell?

Becky Giacomini: Um, everywhere. All over Humboldt County.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Becky Giacomini: Loleta, Shively-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … Elk River.

Scott Hammond: I think McKinleyville had taters and carrots for a long time.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, they did.

Scott Hammond: The Millers grew carrots, you know that.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, and Ferndale had artichokes and potatoes and-

Scott Hammond: Oh, really?

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Becky Giacomini: Those were the days.

Scott Hammond: Where'd you move to Oregon, as they say, Oregon.

Becky Giacomini: Oregon. We went to Pendleton, Oregon.

Scott Hammond: Whoa.

Becky Giacomini: And, uh, Walt went back to teaching 'cause he did teach at Eureka High School, ag, before-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Becky Giacomini: … we got married.

Scott Hammond: Ah.

Becky Giacomini: So then we moved to, um, Eastern Oregon, and he taught at Blue Mountain Community College-

Scott Hammond: Hmm

Becky Giacomini: … and we lived there for five years and-

Scott Hammond: Is that in Pendleton?

Becky Giacomini: Pendleton.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Great, great rodeo there, too, so-

Scott Hammond: That's the big-

Becky Giacomini: … and he was also-

Scott Hammond: … big one, yeah

Becky Giacomini: … a rodeo cowboy then at the time.

Scott Hammond: Wow, Walt, man.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, I know. Hmm.

Scott Hammond: The man, the myth, the legend.

Becky Giacomini: Well, something like that.

Scott Hammond: How's Walt today? Is he doing okay?

Becky Giacomini: He's doing good, yes.

Scott Hammond: Is he? He seems like a nice guy.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, I've, I've stayed with him, you know, all these years-

Scott Hammond: Ah

Becky Giacomini: … so I guess so.

Scott Hammond: You, you and I married up.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, so. Oh, so.

Scott Hammond: Hi, Joni.

Becky Giacomini: Hi, Walt.

Scott Hammond: So, um, I'll, I'll ask the, the difficult questions right out of the gate. So who are you?

Becky Giacomini: Hmm.

Scott Hammond: And what do you want?

Becky Giacomini: Who am I? What do I want? You mean what I want out of life for?

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Well, I've done lots of interesting things.

Becky Giacomini: Um,

Becky Giacomini: mom, wife.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Uh, I worked for 30 years in the school district in Fortuna.

Scott Hammond: Oh, that's right. Did you teach or support?

Becky Giacomini: No, I started in the library.

Scott Hammond: Uh-huh.

Becky Giacomini: And then I moved, as they say, the dark side, and I was in administration.

Scott Hammond: Uh-oh.

Becky Giacomini: So yeah, it was all good, but, um-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Becky Giacomini: … lots of changes in education, which I saw over 30 years,

Becky Giacomini: and-

Scott Hammond: Hmm

Becky Giacomini: … but it was a great- Great thing to do. Love the kids. I'm still volunteering in, in classrooms-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … 'cause I miss that part.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. So retired and been busier than

Becky Giacomini: ever. Um-

Scott Hammond: Right

Becky Giacomini: … along with that was juggling the ranch. And, uh, you know, when you marry a cowboy, the wife works in town.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Becky Giacomini: Mostly for the benefits.

Scott Hammond: Right. Good, good call.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, of course.

Scott Hammond: So that's Fortuna Elementary-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … District? Okay. Gotcha.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: You know, it was cool, I worked at St. Mary's for a year.

Becky Giacomini: Oh.

Scott Hammond: I was a rec major at Humboldt.

Becky Giacomini: Okay.

Scott Hammond: And worked at a, a, a year, and I was half-time Jaus Prairie Elementary-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … and half-time at St. Mary's and-

Becky Giacomini: Mm

Scott Hammond: … you know, different… Very different gig.

Becky Giacomini: Mm.

Scott Hammond: But it's so cool to see do you know Richmond and all the kids that were little

Scott Hammond: kids-

Becky Giacomini: Yep

Scott Hammond: … who are now parents-

Becky Giacomini: Parents

Scott Hammond: … and grandparents even.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, yes

Scott Hammond: And to go, "Oh, that generational thing is cool."

Becky Giacomini: It's great. Yeah. No, the…

Becky Giacomini: I still-

Scott Hammond: 'Cause I'm still 27 inside

Becky Giacomini: I'm more like 20.

Scott Hammond: Oh, you're tw- Okay. You're aging backwards.

Becky Giacomini: I, I just out of high school.

Scott Hammond: I could be 12 or 13 some days.

Becky Giacomini: Really? Good. Yeah, well. Yeah, no, I love it when people come up, "Mrs. Giacomini, do you remember me?" You know.

Scott Hammond: So cool.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Which most of the time I say, " You gotta tell me who you are."

Scott Hammond: Yeah, that's fine.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. No, it's fi-

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: But now I'm seeing their kids and-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … yeah.

Scott Hammond: Or the other line that Joni and I say is, uh, "Hey.

Scott Hammond: Hey, you."

Becky Giacomini: "How are you?"

Scott Hammond: Every once in a while I'll get a name and I'll go-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, I know

Scott Hammond: … "Yeah."

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Okay.

Scott Hammond: "I remember you."

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: "Bill. It's Bob."

Becky Giacomini: Bob.

Scott Hammond: Oh, oops.

Becky Giacomini: I don't even say a name anymore, I just say, "Oh, how are you?"

Scott Hammond: I, I just… I don't know. W- was it drugs or kids or age?

Scott Hammond: Yes.

Becky Giacomini: All of the above.

Scott Hammond: So, uh, you and Walt got married then and had… And moved and then had kids back here?

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. I have two daughters. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Nice.

Becky Giacomini: So, so yeah.

Scott Hammond: Are you a grandma?

Becky Giacomini: I am a grandma times four.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Are they all here?

Becky Giacomini: Uh, no, unfortunately. Um, oldest one is teaching school down out of, um, Oxnard area.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Went to the real Cal Poly. That's where she met her fiance.

Scott Hammond: Nice.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. And-

Scott Hammond: Good school

Becky Giacomini: … yeah, it's a great school.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: And yeah, my oldest daughter and her husband went to Cal Poly, so it's kind of a family thing.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. So our oldest daughter and her husband live in Por- um,

Becky Giacomini: Fortuna.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Becky Giacomini: And they are running a dairy in Ferndale.

Scott Hammond: Oh, very cool.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. So-

Scott Hammond: Yeah, Joni has a sister in SLO that runs Pizza Republic.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, interesting.

Scott Hammond: And, uh, we go down, it's, it's a cool-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Uh, well, they live in Paso, but that's just a-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … what a neat area that is.

Becky Giacomini: That whole area has changed a lot since, you know-

Scott Hammond: Oh, yeah

Becky Giacomini: … down there, but it's, uh, it's a great. We call it the Banana Belt of California.

Scott Hammond: That is nice down there.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm. Mm.

Scott Hammond: The Banana Belt of up here is what?

Scott Hammond: Brookings?

Becky Giacomini: Maybe.

Scott Hammond: Of Oregon.

Becky Giacomini: Oregon.

Scott Hammond: It's up in Oregon. So you guys came back and had kids and started ranching

Scott Hammond: and-

Becky Giacomini: Yep, yep. We went back to, um… Well, we worked for the McBride family and ran-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Becky Giacomini: … cattle at, um, what is now the refuge.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Wildlife refuge. We lived there for a number of years.

Scott Hammond: Down in Hookton, down that way?

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Okay. Wow.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. So we ran cattle on both sides of the freeway and,

Becky Giacomini: and, um, and, uh, and then out at Bear River also.

Scott Hammond: So you know what's-his-name.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, you know… Who's what's-his-name?

Scott Hammond: The rancher.

Becky Giacomini: Many ranchers.

Scott Hammond: He's g- He's down by Swiss Hall. He's Theresa's dad.

Becky Giacomini: Really?

Scott Hammond: His name is… He's Norwegian.

Becky Giacomini: Oh. What, Collins?

Scott Hammond: No.

Becky Giacomini: Which one? Uh.

Scott Hammond: Uh, uh, but it's, um-

Becky Giacomini: Okay

Scott Hammond: … I'll think of it here in a minute.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, okay. It'll come to you.

Scott Hammond: Oh, yeah. So he's, uh, right by Swiss Hall.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Lots of dairy cattle.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Amazing dude. Um, I just had it and I lost it.

Becky Giacomini: Okay.

Scott Hammond: So I'll think of it in a minute, but he's tough, tough old bird.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Broke both of his heel bones bucking hay and kept bucking-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, God

Scott Hammond: … until the night came and he, um-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, dear

Scott Hammond: … he crawled in and she took him to St. Joe's or wherever and-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … got those talus bones-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, gosh

Scott Hammond: … repaired. Yeah. He's just the nicest guy. I'll come back with-

Becky Giacomini: Okay

Scott Hammond: … that name.

Becky Giacomini: I can't wait.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Stick around. I wanna tell my Don Brown story, though.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, please.

Scott Hammond: So-

Becky Giacomini: Love Don Brown. Yeah, def-

Scott Hammond: Don Brown was a State Farm legend in Fortuna.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: I realize he, he, he really wasn't there that many years.

Becky Giacomini: No, he wasn't, but boy did he make a mark-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … in Fortuna.

Scott Hammond: I think he was involved with more things than maybe you were.

Becky Giacomini: Um, yep, and he started a lot of things that are still going.

Scott Hammond: That's cool.

Becky Giacomini: He had a great mark.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. So I came in, uh, to State Farm. Oh, look, Scott Hammond State Farm.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, look it. It says that. Mm.

Scott Hammond: Like a good neighbor. I never really promote this till just now.

Becky Giacomini: Do you always have that on?

Scott Hammond: I wear it to bed.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, swell. I'm glad you're so proud of it. Or proud of State Farm. Which we are State Farm members.

Scott Hammond: And actually I have a tattoo that says this.

Becky Giacomini: I hope not.

Scott Hammond: No, I'm kidding. There was a guy in the speaking industry that had "My name is

Scott Hammond: Scott"-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, really?

Scott Hammond: … with one of those name tags tattooed.

Becky Giacomini: Okay.

Scott Hammond: But I digress.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yes you did. Okay. Keep going.

Scott Hammond: Severely. So Don Brown was a, um, a l- legend, as you know, so as a young Padawan learner at 53, came into this game pretty late.

Becky Giacomini: Oh.

Scott Hammond: I, uh, showed up at his doorstep with my sport coat-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … and I'm ready to go with my satchel, and he goes, "Hey, Scott." You know, he's

Scott Hammond: Texas.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yeah.

Scott Hammond: "Get… Go in my apartment and there's some shorts and some flops in there. We're gonna go kayaking." I go-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … "Yes, sir." And I, uh, got c- the garb and dumped my satchel. And he had these two beautiful cherry wood kayaks-

Becky Giacomini: Oh

Scott Hammond: … that he had built, right?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yeah

Scott Hammond: … on his Subaru.

Becky Giacomini: Yep.

Scott Hammond: And he goes, "Come on, Scott." And we got in there and we went to Hookton-

Becky Giacomini: Yep

Scott Hammond: … where you ranched.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: And, um, it was the Zen, uh, t- training with the Padawan master. After months and months of testing and all the-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … left brain or right brain, whatever-

Becky Giacomini: Mm

Scott Hammond: … part of that brain was. And he goes, "Just enjoy the day." He goes, "Scott, you know, enjoy this beautiful Humboldt County and make time for it 'cause you're in the middle of everything. Number two, when you come to a, uh, a, a end-of-life service, I want you to be the guy that brings the check, not the casserole." And I said, "Yes, sir." And he goes, "And then do something meaningful that still goes like, uh, you know, a community involved event," like Humboldt Heroes that we talked about-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … with Nick here.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: And, um, "Leave a legacy, man." And I go, "Dude, what a, what a memorable afternoon." And I always wanted to repay and, and reciprocate, and then he died. So I, maybe I'll get to do it later.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, you will.

Scott Hammond: And he was Don Brown, the Bible book salesman at-

Becky Giacomini: Yep

Scott Hammond: … at Baylor. He'd go… Hear that? He'd go door to door selling Bibles.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yeah.

Scott Hammond: And Baylor's full of rich kids, oil kids, and here's this po' boy selling Bibles. And I go, "Eh," but he's brilliant. He had the library, well-read.

Becky Giacomini: Mm. Oh, yes.

Scott Hammond: Anyway, enough. Let's go back to you.

Becky Giacomini: Well, let's… I gotta tell you, Don, Don was, uh, one of a million.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: And we went kayaking with him. He put together a trip w- down the Eel.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Becky Giacomini: And, uh, you know, Walt and I ventured out in a canoe. I'm surprised we're still alive.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: But it was the best trip, and that was with Don.

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So let's ta- take us on a journey through-

Becky Giacomini: Okay

Scott Hammond: … the Eel River Valley.

Becky Giacomini: Mm, okay.

Scott Hammond: Just kinda your sense of the culture and the, the history and where we're at and… Then I wanna ask you about specifics about your involvement in the foundation-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … Women for Wellness.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: There must be a million dairy and beef-

Scott Hammond: … group. I mean, I, I know a little bit about The Hunts. They're part of that beef-

Becky Giacomini: Oh. Oh, yeah

Scott Hammond: … association. What's it called?

Becky Giacomini: Well, depends on which Hunts, but yes-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … Cattlemen and Cattlewomen.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, we were very in, you know, involved. Both Walt and I were presidents of both of our organizations.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And, and, uh, the ag community is pretty tight, and all over the county obviously, but Eel River Valley.

Scott Hammond: Let me set it up for us real quick. By the way, if you're just joining us, Scott Hammond, 100% Humboldt, with my amazing new best friend, Becky Giacomini- … from the Eel River Valley, which I'm about to show people on

Scott Hammond: my-

Becky Giacomini: Oh

Scott Hammond: … handy-dandy Scott Hammond Humboldt County map.

Becky Giacomini: I see that. Wow.

Scott Hammond: Nick must put it up every week just for us. So if you look down there where the 101 is, the Eel River Valley's south of Eureka, and go Google it or-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … ChatGPT. But, uh-

Becky Giacomini: Now come visit

Scott Hammond: … and come visit-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … 'cause it's kinda, it's very cool.

Becky Giacomini: It's very cool.

Scott Hammond: And Fortuna's the friendly city, so tell us about your neck of the woods.

Becky Giacomini: Okay. Well, I'm pretty involved with, even when I was, uh, working, involved in the community of Fortuna. I don't live there. We lived in Loleta for 30 years, and we moved to Rio Dell to find more sunshine.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And, um, but Fortuna's always home, so involved with the chamber, which does a lot of things in the community. Um, really connected with, um, the hospital, Redwood Memorial-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … which we, uh, all call our hospital because it is.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And, uh, we need it in our community, and, uh, it's not just Fortuna. It's obviously east and south and-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Becky Giacomini: … and, um-

Scott Hammond: My doctor's down there, and we live in McKinleyville.

Becky Giacomini: Well-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Becky Giacomini: … there you go.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: So.

Scott Hammond: Hey, Dr. Hayne.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, he's great.

Scott Hammond: Dan Hayne.

Becky Giacomini: He's great. And-

Scott Hammond: Good-looking young guy

Becky Giacomini: … and he decided to stay in Humboldt, part of our residency program, which is-

Scott Hammond: Really great guy. Super understated and-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Yeah

Scott Hammond: … it's a long drive from McKinleyville, but hey.

Becky Giacomini: Hey, you get to hang out with him.

Scott Hammond: That's right.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Anyway, so that's kind of, uh, m- my passion is the hospital. I was on the community board for both-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … hospitals for 10 years, and on the foundation board on and off. And, um, you know, we need to support our hospital, our docs, our-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … and a lot of our people that work at the hospitals are our friends and

Becky Giacomini: neighbors.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: And so pretty passionate about that. So always having a fundraiser or two, you know, for the, for whatever we're doing and, uh, not just the hospital, but other, other things. So

Becky Giacomini: yes.

Scott Hammond: Your hosp- I like it.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: That's, uh, I had… Our firstborn, Jacob, was born at Redwood Memorial with-

Becky Giacomini: Our grandkids were

Scott Hammond: … An- Anderson and Johansen.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yes. Oh, yes.

Scott Hammond: Was that Dr. Johansen at the last fundraiser?

Becky Giacomini: No, that was Dr. Anderson.

Scott Hammond: That was Anderson, sorry.

Becky Giacomini: Yep, yep.

Scott Hammond: Johansen, has he passed?

Becky Giacomini: Nope, but they moved over to, I think, like Marysville over in the

Becky Giacomini: valley.

Scott Hammond: Pretty funny guys.

Becky Giacomini: Both, oh, they were quite the…

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Oh, they were the pair. They must have delivered a million babies in Humboldt

Scott Hammond: County.

Becky Giacomini: Pretty darn close in Redwood, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Between, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Oh, they were great guys.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, history. So if, if I've never been to Eel River Valley, tell us about the community, the culture, the ranching, the people.

Becky Giacomini: Well, Eel River Valley-

Scott Hammond: How would you characterize that couple minutes?

Becky Giacomini: Well, hmm, I think, you know, obviously the ranching/dairy-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … community is very strong. It's changed over the years.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And, um, but they, they support their own, and they support the community. They're always doing something.

Becky Giacomini: They're-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … kids are involved in things. They're growing, um, the kids' love of agriculture. The FFA programs-

Scott Hammond: Huge

Becky Giacomini: … are super strong in Fortuna-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … Ferndale. Well, all over the county.

Scott Hammond: The county, county fairgrounds are there.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yeah. So the sale goes wonderful every year, the, at, during fair time in August.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And, um, and the community just supports the kids because they're doing something worthwhile and learning about agriculture and-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … hoping that, you know, maybe they'll stay, which has been tough. You know, a lot of the kids do leave.

Scott Hammond: Sure.

Becky Giacomini: But, um, sometimes they come back.

Scott Hammond: Funny how sometimes they do.

Becky Giacomini: I know.

Scott Hammond: Our kids come back, and they smell the air, and they go, "Dad, there's no air like Humboldt County."

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Yeah, I know.

Scott Hammond: It's just the freshest-

Becky Giacomini: You got the trees. You got the beaches. You got, you know-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … less traffic.

Scott Hammond: They're actually proven correct 'cause the most pure air, as tested in America, is, um, offshore of Trinidad.

Becky Giacomini: Really?

Scott Hammond: 'Cause that, that north-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … breeze comes in-

Becky Giacomini: Coming in

Scott Hammond: … from Alaska, and it's, uh-

Becky Giacomini: And the view, how can you not love it?

Scott Hammond: You might say it's pretty cool.

Becky Giacomini: It is pretty cool.

Scott Hammond: We live in McKinleyville on the Bluffs. It's pretty dang cool.

Becky Giacomini: Uh, yeah. Mm, yeah, very cool. Well, like Ferndale.

Scott Hammond: So the culture of Eel River Valley is different from a lot of, and the same, but from other parts.

Becky Giacomini: Yes.

Scott Hammond: You guys have the ag in place. You got the fairgrounds. Sports is big.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Family's real big.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: And, um, I like that. I like the fact that it seems, I don't know, more- I, I don't know about normal America. I guess sh- as you juxtapose Arcata to that, I guess you could say-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … it's much more traditional.

Becky Giacomini: True.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: You know, I say all our communities are different. We always say we're not like Eureka when you-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … talk about Fortuna.

Scott Hammond: Sure.

Becky Giacomini: Different culture, different, you know, people wanna be in Fortuna for

Becky Giacomini: weather-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … and just the smaller vibe.

Scott Hammond: And then there's Ferndale.

Becky Giacomini: Then there's Ferndale.

Scott Hammond: Your, your odd cousin out-

Scott Hammond: … w- out west there a little bit.

Becky Giacomini: But, you know, people flock to Ferndale too, to-

Scott Hammond: Yes, they do

Becky Giacomini: … you know, they have that vibe, that small town vibe that, you know-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … people look out for each other, and schools are good, and-

Scott Hammond: It's … I always have a good time. Go to The Steeple to-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yeah

Scott Hammond: … uh, concerts and-

Becky Giacomini: Concerts

Scott Hammond: … Tia's Tacos, and-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … it's great. And, and I th- I think they're glad when everybody goes home.

Becky Giacomini: I think they are. They like their quietness, but they also like you to come visit.

Scott Hammond: It's cool. Oh, it's beautiful.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Was just there just about 20 minutes ago, so.

Scott Hammond: Really fun. And, and then east of you, you got Grizzly Creek and-

Becky Giacomini: Yes

Scott Hammond: … the Van Duzen R- see where it, it runs over there, folks?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, there it is. There it is.

Scott Hammond: The Van Duzen, it's, I can hear it running from here. Um, yeah, really, I mean, out 36 to Ruth, I mean, it's like,

Scott Hammond: hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, when people come to visit, it's just like, "Where do you find the sun?" Well, drive five minutes east, and then, you know, we're talking.

Scott Hammond: You'll be okay.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, you'll be fine.

Scott Hammond: Carlotta, Hydesville, you'll get there.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. That's-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … very true.

Scott Hammond: No, it's beautiful out there.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: So what do you like and dislike about, uh, Humboldt and down, down your way?

Becky Giacomini: You know, um, I don't really. Uh, but I, I had a hard time adjusting when I first moved up to Humboldt, but that was in the '70s, and so-

Scott Hammond: Right

Becky Giacomini: … that's a different era.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Becky Giacomini: And, um, I would never, uh, move back to Southern California or the Bay Area. I like the smaller, small pace, uh, less traffic, um, just the beauty, and, uh, when people ask about it, it's just that, you know, y- y- you get used to… And plus, the weather has definitely changed from the-

Scott Hammond: It's better

Becky Giacomini: … '70s. Yeah, so much better.

Scott Hammond: So much b- don't tell me. Shh.

Becky Giacomini: Shh. Don't. We didn't say that, okay.

Scott Hammond: It's raining like crazy right now.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, gosh. Oh, it never stops.

Scott Hammond: You would hate living here. You should fly in and spend money, but don't stay.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah-

Scott Hammond: It's just-

Becky Giacomini: … please, move on.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. It's, it's, you know, our coun- our county's shrinking.

Becky Giacomini: Oh.

Scott Hammond: It's actually that's actually pretty close to true.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, that's true. That's true.

Becky Giacomini: Um-

Scott Hammond: If we're bragging

Becky Giacomini: … but we don't give up. We don't give up.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. We might grow a percent.

Becky Giacomini: Keep going. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Which is fine. I, and I think that's shifting. I think a lot of people are coming from SoCal and-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … the Bay Area and going, "Oh-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … I just sold for two milli- million. I could buy for a million and-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … what? Retire?"

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Yes.

Scott Hammond: Hmm, live off of that.

Becky Giacomini: And enjoy this. Yes.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: We do get that.

Scott Hammond: So, uh, what are you… I, I should ask what are you not involved in, but I won't ask that. So what, what are your, what are your pet, um, involvements in committees and stuff? Uh, you mentioned the s- Redwood Memorial, of course.

Becky Giacomini: Right.

Scott Hammond: The Chamber's a ma- has a great history in Fortuna.

Becky Giacomini: They do. And ever-evolving, and it's, it's fun because you meet people and new businesses, new contacts.

Scott Hammond: Monday Club, so you've-

Becky Giacomini: Monday Club. We meet there. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: That, that's… Is- does the Chamber own the building, or how does-

Becky Giacomini: No, the city owns that one.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: But they supply it to the Chamber to-

Becky Giacomini: Right, so we can do monthly, um, meetings, lunch meetings.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: We used to do weekly, but it just, it was difficult to keep that pace. But-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Becky Giacomini: … once a month is great. We have different speakers, different things that are

Becky Giacomini: going on.

Scott Hammond: M- Monthly Monday.

Becky Giacomini: Monthly Monday.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Becky Giacomini: But we switched to Tuesday-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Becky Giacomini: … in the Monday Club. You got that?

Scott Hammond: I've-

Becky Giacomini: Did you catch that?

Scott Hammond: Sure.

Becky Giacomini: Okay, good. Yeah. I don't know why they switched to Tuesdays, but they did. So but the, the board is real engaged, and it's a younger board, which, you know-

Scott Hammond: Hmm

Becky Giacomini: … we need, uh-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … the younger business people to-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … be involved if they wanna keep the community going.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Becky Giacomini: And so, um, always working on something.

Scott Hammond: My friend David Reed. Hi, David.

Scott Hammond: He's-

Becky Giacomini: Hi, David

Scott Hammond: … part for a long time.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, he was.

Scott Hammond: Yep.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, he was.

Scott Hammond: A great guy.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, he is.

Scott Hammond: He and I both sold advertising at the same time.

Becky Giacomini: Oh.

Scott Hammond: I was at this little… Remember newspapers?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, uh-

Scott Hammond: You could read them.

Becky Giacomini: Newspapers. Oh, really? Yes.

Scott Hammond: Well, I was a shopper at Tri-City Weekly-

Becky Giacomini: Oh

Scott Hammond: … from the Lighthouse Ranch and Gospel Outreach.

Becky Giacomini: I remember that.

Scott Hammond: And the, uh, we were our own paper, and we-

Becky Giacomini: Yes, you were

Scott Hammond: … competed against David and his Daily Times-Standard.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, mm, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Anyway, it all worked out.

Becky Giacomini: Those were the days.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. So yeah, you remember, uh, Gospel Outreach and Lighthouse Ranch, right?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, definitely.

Scott Hammond: And now it's the BLM thing.

Becky Giacomini: Yep. That all changed, but-

Scott Hammond: Yep

Becky Giacomini: … yeah, I know.

Scott Hammond: So is Loleta and Loleta Resident.

Becky Giacomini: Was there a long time, but-

Scott Hammond: Were you there when the ranch was going in the-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … '90s?

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So you knew about all those-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yeah

Scott Hammond: … weirdos.

Becky Giacomini: Well, different, you know?

Scott Hammond: Different. You're so judicious. They're different.

Becky Giacomini: That's all right. That's what makes-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … everything kind of swirl together.

Scott Hammond: No, they were, let's just, they were Jesus freaks, let's just say.

Becky Giacomini: No, they were.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: They were.

Scott Hammond: Cult members perhaps, but different, lovable.

Becky Giacomini: That was that life, yeah. That was that life.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Hardworking, yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: So, so you did a little advertising, okay.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, 20 years-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … for Ron Pelleggi. Also-

Becky Giacomini: I remember Ron

Scott Hammond: … also Italian.

Becky Giacomini: Very.

Scott Hammond: Hey, Ronnie. What's up?

Becky Giacomini: With an I.

Scott Hammond: So we wanna get Ron on the show. He lives in Auburn now, but-

Becky Giacomini: Ah

Scott Hammond: … he would have a Humboldt, a 100% Humboldt story.

Becky Giacomini: He would. He definitely would.

Scott Hammond: From Philly to the ranch to, um-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … you know, the success story that was the Tri-City that sold-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … to the Times-Standard and… But yeah, David and I knew, or, or I'm bringing it back to David.

Becky Giacomini: David, David.

Scott Hammond: We're coming back to Fortuna quick.

Becky Giacomini: Well, yes. I kind of followed around Dev- David from, you know, the F Bid, and then, you know-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … doing all the different things.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: At the zoo for a bit, and now EA for Food for People, and yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, he's doing really good there.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. No, he is.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: It's a good spot for him.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Yeah. Had he and Carly on the show.

Scott Hammond: They were-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yeah

Scott Hammond: … super guests. Hi, David.

Becky Giacomini: Hi, David.

Scott Hammond: Hi, Carly.

Becky Giacomini: Hi, Carly.

Scott Hammond: Carly and David. So we're done saying hi to everyone here.

Becky Giacomini: Well, we want them to feel, yeah, included.

Scott Hammond: That's right.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So hey, uh, lucky for you, we have the part of the show where I'm gonna bring it forward, where you could win a fabulous prize.

Becky Giacomini: Hmm.

Scott Hammond: Not a copy of my book. Not a Quality Body Shop business card.

Scott Hammond: You see it?

Becky Giacomini: Oh.

Scott Hammond: Kind of shameless. Did you catch the shameless plug?

Becky Giacomini: I ca- I'm catching this. This is interesting.

Scott Hammond: I'm gonna set it right there so you can see it good.

Becky Giacomini: Uh-huh. Uh-huh.

Scott Hammond: But we'll start you with the-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, let's see

Scott Hammond: Beautiful and- … rare Scott Hammond State Farm emery board-

Becky Giacomini: Wow

Scott Hammond: … to keep those nails-

Scott Hammond: … shiny and beautiful. But you don't get that yet. We're gonna ring the bell and give you the quiz.

Scott Hammond: Ready?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, quiz one. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Are you ready?

Becky Giacomini: Uh, I so, yes.

Scott Hammond: This is for all the, the nickels here, so.

Becky Giacomini: Nickels? I thought it was an emery board.

Scott Hammond: Well, there's, might be other things-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, oh, okay

Scott Hammond: … in the bag, or the box.

Scott Hammond: There's-

Becky Giacomini: I'm listening.

Scott Hammond: Wait. Okay. Yes.

Becky Giacomini: That one's empty. Okay.

Scott Hammond: So you have a full day to do whatever you want to do in Humboldt County, 9:00 to 9:00, with, with Walt. What do you, what do you do? Where do you go?

Becky Giacomini: Hmm.

Scott Hammond: What's fun for you?

Becky Giacomini: For me, and not for him, but, you know, uh, I love-

Scott Hammond: For you

Becky Giacomini: … going to the beach.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Becky Giacomini: That's my-

Scott Hammond: SoCal thing.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, SoCal thing.

Scott Hammond: What beach do you like?

Becky Giacomini: Well, Centerville, if, you know, the road's open, and-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … Cable Bluff, easy. Love that one.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, easy to get down to. I would spend some time at, or I would be taking a hike, probably the mountains somewhere close.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Becky Giacomini: Trinidad.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Anything outside.

Scott Hammond: Lots of hikes.

Becky Giacomini: Lots of hikes, yeah.

Scott Hammond: And a lot of hikes. You know that hiking group from Fortuna, they're a wild bunch.

Becky Giacomini: Tell me about it. I, the one that started it, I can hardly keep up with her. She's 80 plus now.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Becky Giacomini: And she did, uh, they've done so many hikes. They just celebrated-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … hmm, how many? Can't remember. But many hikes and, uh, so I don't usually catch theirs, but-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … I do have my own hiking group that-

Scott Hammond: Oh, yeah

Becky Giacomini: … all la- all ladies, yes. There's seven of us, and we-

Scott Hammond: Where do you guys hike?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, we've been to a lot of the national parks.

Becky Giacomini: Um-

Scott Hammond: Cool

Becky Giacomini: … threw in Sweden too. So we've-

Scott Hammond: Oh

Becky Giacomini: … yeah, you know, we're international.

Scott Hammond: So do you guys have a day we get around a lot. So you have a day where you, a, a set day where you guys hike?

Becky Giacomini: No. Well, I mean, we take a big trip every-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … year, and we plan a year in advance. But when we get together, it's, you know-

Scott Hammond: Hmm

Becky Giacomini: … sometimes we'll go up to Trinidad or Trinity or-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … Humboldt State. Oh, sorry, Cal Poly Humboldt above there, so.

Scott Hammond: It's so funny you would correct that 'cause-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, I know

Scott Hammond: … it's an ongoing theme.

Becky Giacomini: I know, it is.

Scott Hammond: It's-

Becky Giacomini: I should just stay with Humboldt State. That's what I know.

Scott Hammond: Everybody knows Humboldt. Hey, we went to Humboldt.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: I, I got a degree from Humboldt State.

Becky Giacomini: You, there-

Scott Hammond: It wasn't Cal Poly.

Becky Giacomini: No, it was not.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And some would say it's still not a poly.

Becky Giacomini: Ooh.

Scott Hammond: From Slo, you Slo folks.

Becky Giacomini: No, mm-mm.

Scott Hammond: Slo pokes.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. That's bad. Oh, and then back to Ferndale, Russ Park. If you have not hiked Russ Park-

Scott Hammond: Joni just hiked that

Becky Giacomini: … that, that is a, that's a jewel. That's a fun one.

Scott Hammond: And the name of the pond up top?

Becky Giacomini: Yeah-huh.

Scott Hammond: Her name is, uh-

Becky Giacomini: Ze- Zeppa, uh, yes

Scott Hammond: … Zipporah.

Becky Giacomini: Zipporah. Uh, Zipporah. Uh, Zipporah Russ. Yes, it goes way back.

Scott Hammond: Zipporah. Now, Zipporah, there's an old-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … might be a Bible name.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, I'm sure.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: It's all part of that-

Scott Hammond: Joni loves that

Becky Giacomini: … old Russ, yeah

Scott Hammond: … it's really whimsical. There's little, they have, like, a little troll-

Becky Giacomini: Yes

Scott Hammond: … uh, things set up in a tree.

Becky Giacomini: Have you not done it, obviously?

Becky Giacomini: You don't-

Scott Hammond: Done it once.

Becky Giacomini: Okay, okay.

Scott Hammond: I c- I wanna-

Becky Giacomini: And they're adding some new trails, so it's-

Scott Hammond: Oh, really?

Becky Giacomini: … very nice.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. And they have some trail stewards that really take care of it.

Scott Hammond: What's the other park in Ferndale at the end, the, um, where the ball fields

Scott Hammond: are?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, Fireman's Park.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, yeah. They-

Scott Hammond: Met a gu- met a guy there one day with Joni and my daughter, and he turned me on to his e-bike, he and his buddy, and he goes, "Can I…" I go, "Can I try it?" He goes, "Sure." And he ended up selling me that e, same, same e-bike a month later.

Becky Giacomini: See? Friendly Ferndale.

Scott Hammond: Super cool. He's from Fortuna, though.

Becky Giacomini: But that's all right. He was in Ferndale.

Scott Hammond: Actually, you know who he is. He's a retired ci- city engineer-

Becky Giacomini: Oh

Scott Hammond: … with a Swiss name, or Swedish.

Scott Hammond: Oh.

Becky Giacomini: Or somebody. Steven Avis?

Scott Hammond: Nope.

Becky Giacomini: No.

Scott Hammond: Close.

Becky Giacomini: Mm.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: What was your name again?

Becky Giacomini: I think he's having a moment.

Scott Hammond: I have two more names I gotta get to you. One is the rancher by Swiss Hall.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, you do.

Scott Hammond: I feel terrible, man. He's such a great guy.

Scott Hammond: Ah.

Becky Giacomini: Are you related to him?

Scott Hammond: Not that I know of.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, okay.

Scott Hammond: But I am Norwegian.

Becky Giacomini: Ooh, okay, so is Walt.

Scott Hammond: Walt's Norwegian?

Becky Giacomini: On the other side, yeah.

Scott Hammond: He's a Norwegian.

Becky Giacomini: His mom was Norwegian.

Scott Hammond: My dad used to call them Scandahovians.

Becky Giacomini: Ooh, don't get started on that.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, they're a whole-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-mm

Scott Hammond: … other deal.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-mm. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: All right. Hey, question number two. So you would hike, and those Fortuna hiker, that group-

Becky Giacomini: Uh

Scott Hammond: … crazy.

Becky Giacomini: They are. But they go all over. They do ranch land. We've done s- a ranch hike out there.

Scott Hammond: They get permissions on cool-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yeah, I know

Scott Hammond: … cool properties, right?

Becky Giacomini: I know they do.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, Joni's been on a number.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And by the way, if they say 8:00, they-

Becky Giacomini: They do not wait for you.

Scott Hammond: They, no, they already left.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: It's like, wait, wait.

Becky Giacomini: They, they start 15, 20 minutes early on when they're parking. Yeah, I know.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: So Reese Hughes is pr- hi, Reese.

Becky Giacomini: Hi, Reese.

Scott Hammond: Do you know Reese?

Becky Giacomini: I know him, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Gosh, you know everybody. You, you don't know, the joke is you don't know everybody, you know every other buddy.

Becky Giacomini: Uh, every other buddy.

Scott Hammond: Which is still a lot.

Becky Giacomini: That is a lot. Hmm.

Scott Hammond: Hey, question number two. What's, uh, what's enriching to you, and what is soul-crushing?

Becky Giacomini: Hmm. That's interesting.

Scott Hammond: What fills up your cup, and what dumps it out quicker than anything?

Becky Giacomini: I kinda think, um, obviously, so, what fills my cup is to be able to do some kind of a service to, for others.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: You know, that's why I volunteer for a lot of different events or organizations.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And, um, so, you know, there's always something perking that I'm working on.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Now, soul-crushing. Hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Don't know.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Energy-wise, I, I don't like to think about that, I guess.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Just keep moving.

Scott Hammond: It's denial, more than a river.

Becky Giacomini: Denial. Oh, much more than a river, yes.

Scott Hammond: It's more than that river.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: I like that. Okay, that's fair.

Becky Giacomini: Okay.

Scott Hammond: Um-

Becky Giacomini: Am I getting close to the emery board win yet?

Scott Hammond: Y- you're making progress.

Becky Giacomini: Gosh, I, I'm eyeing it.

Scott Hammond: Don't-

Becky Giacomini: This is good

Scott Hammond: … don't get carried away.

Becky Giacomini: Okay.

Scott Hammond: This is a pretty nice emery board.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, it is, with a cover.

Scott Hammond: Question number three. You get to go out to dinner anywhere you want.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: I'm buying. Where are you going?

Becky Giacomini: Well, I'm, I'm going to dinner in about a half hour. Do you wanna go to Sea Grill with me? You wanna pay?

Scott Hammond: I-

Becky Giacomini: I like Sea Grill-

Scott Hammond: I-

Becky Giacomini: … 'cause I don't go there very often

Scott Hammond: … you haven't won the contest yet, so.

Becky Giacomini: Okay. I'm sorry.

Scott Hammond: So, so Sea Grill would be a choice.

Becky Giacomini: That would be a good choice.

Scott Hammond: Sea Grill's delicious.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, it is.

Scott Hammond: They used to have the killer salad bar.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, I know it.

Scott Hammond: It was all fresh.

Becky Giacomini: I know.

Scott Hammond: And then COVID.

Becky Giacomini: Don't start. I know. Mm.

Scott Hammond: I know.

Becky Giacomini: And they also sold Harris Ranch beef, which we sold our cattle to, so maybe that's why I like Sea Grill.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Yeah

Scott Hammond: I bet the beef was delicious.

Becky Giacomini: It was, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Let's go get beef at the C Grill.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, we did.

Scott Hammond: I guess you could surf and turf.

Becky Giacomini: W- well, yes, you could, or just a salad bar and-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … beef. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Gosh, y- I haven't eaten there in years.

Scott Hammond: We used to-

Becky Giacomini: I haven't either.

Scott Hammond: We used to have lunch there every Tuesday with the BNI networking group.

Becky Giacomini: Right. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And that was, you know, and then you take it for granted. It's like we used to eat at Abruzzi all the time in Arcata.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: We'd always trade, and we'd go, "Oh, are we gonna go to Abruzzi again?"

Becky Giacomini: Again. I know.

Scott Hammond: And now I'd give my right arm to go to Abruzzi.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: It's amazing.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: We just lost Chris Smith, the former owner.

Becky Giacomini: I know. He was great. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Sweetheart. Oh.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: What a great guy.

Becky Giacomini: Along with Velgeno. What a, what a duo they were.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Yeah. Oh, dynamic.

Becky Giacomini: Mm.

Scott Hammond: Nobody, nobody more fun. So, uh, Sea Grill is your final

Scott Hammond: answer.

Becky Giacomini: Well, it could be.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Can I have three or four?

Scott Hammond: Go.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, okay. Benbow.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm. Ooh.

Becky Giacomini: Do a little trip and yep, fun.

Scott Hammond: Benbow Inn.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Let's show everybody where Benbow is.

Scott Hammond: It's-

Becky Giacomini: Yes, it's way down

Scott Hammond: … toward the bottom

Becky Giacomini: … bottom, yes.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. On 101.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, way down there, but beautiful.

Scott Hammond: South of Garberville. Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Beautiful dining room.

Scott Hammond: And warm sometimes.

Becky Giacomini: Very warm, and you could sit outside-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … in the warm on the patio.

Becky Giacomini: It's-

Scott Hammond: Very refreshing down there.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm. It is. It is. And I will throw in Ferndale with Ivanhoe.

Scott Hammond: Oh, okay.

Becky Giacomini: Maybe. The old Ivanhoe.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Um, way back when-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … 'cause it was kind of the place.

Scott Hammond: Weren't they famous for ravioli or something?

Scott Hammond: Or-

Becky Giacomini: Oh. Uh

Scott Hammond: … some I- Italian dish?

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Well, they were great on lots of great beef.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Becky Giacomini: And they, and they did, um-

Scott Hammond: Was it Harris Ranch Beef?

Becky Giacomini: No, I don't think so, but it was okay.

Scott Hammond: But it was … It was delicious.

Becky Giacomini: It was delicious. It was. They did a great polenta.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: You know, real Italian stuff.

Scott Hammond: I think that's it, the polenta.

Becky Giacomini: Polenta. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Hmm.

Becky Giacomini: You know, the old time. But it, and, and what makes it fun is 'cause you always see somebody or five or 10 people you know.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Becky Giacomini: And so it, it-

Scott Hammond: And it may b- have been a while. Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … yeah. It's kind of a social thing.

Scott Hammond: Was Carlotto's party for, for two?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yes. Carlotto's for sure.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. That was, that was kind of the gathering spot for after the rodeo and after any event or after the auction yard after, on Wednesdays.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And there again, you knew everybody that when you walked in so.

Scott Hammond: Well, good job. You have done so fabulous.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, gosh. Thank you.

Scott Hammond: Um, I wanna hear about some more, uh, committees and stuff, and I wanna hear about the rodeo, but first I-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, okay

Scott Hammond: … as you know, I like to make a good presentation.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, h- okay. Here, here it comes.

Scott Hammond: Are you ready?

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, I'm so. I'm waiting.

Scott Hammond: You don't have one of these where you live, but you have one down the street.

Becky Giacomini: Oh.

Scott Hammond: A Dutch Brothers card from our friends at Dutch Brothers.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, Dutch Brothers.

Scott Hammond: Located in Eureka, Eureka, and Arcata.

Becky Giacomini: Yes.

Scott Hammond: Is there three?

Becky Giacomini: I don't know.

Scott Hammond: I think there is three.

Becky Giacomini: I know there's-

Scott Hammond: Um, so congrats. You've done so well.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, thank you. Oh, and-

Scott Hammond: And, and the Scott Hammond State Farm Emory board.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, I think-

Scott Hammond: Look at how they fit together

Becky Giacomini: … oh, they're so cute. How nice.

Scott Hammond: Thank you.

Becky Giacomini: Thank you so much.

Scott Hammond: And thank you for participating in our, um, weekly-

Becky Giacomini: Ding, ding, ding

Scott Hammond: … quiz here.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm. Okay.

Scott Hammond: 100% Humboldt podcast.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: With my new best friend-

Becky Giacomini: Mm

Scott Hammond: … Becky Giacomini-

Becky Giacomini: Mm

Scott Hammond: … if you're just joining us. So I don't know why I'm whispering all of a sudden.

Becky Giacomini: I don't know. It, am I supposed to be whispering?

Scott Hammond: No, you can-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, okay

Scott Hammond: … talk regular.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, okay, good.

Scott Hammond: I'll make it weird here. If you don't mind. I had a, I had a job interview when I, uh, worked for Cox Cable and Suddenlink, and I gotta tell the story.

Becky Giacomini: How many jobs have you had?

Scott Hammond: Like two.

Becky Giacomini: Okay.

Scott Hammond: Tri-City for 20 years and Cox Cable-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, okay

Scott Hammond: … for, Suddenlink for 10. Oh, and this job. I've had three.

Becky Giacomini: And this j- Okay, you've had three.

Scott Hammond: Not bad for a guy 87 years old.

Becky Giacomini: That's f- well, took you a while.

Becky Giacomini: Okay.

Scott Hammond: It took me a long… No, he's conducting the interview, and I'm, I'm like, I, I'm like you. I'm getting excited. I'm driving. You know, uh, let me just tell you about me, and I have this amazing history. And let me, "Hey, Brent." And he goes, "Excuse me, Scott." He goes, "I'll conduct the interview if you don't mind."

Becky Giacomini: Ooh.

Scott Hammond: And I said… And I listened myself into a pretty good 10-year job.

Becky Giacomini: Well, there you go.

Scott Hammond: Yep, grew a lot.

Becky Giacomini: You learned. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Sometimes, Scott.

Becky Giacomini: See, that's what you're supposed to do is be learning-

Scott Hammond: That's right

Becky Giacomini: … as you go.

Scott Hammond: That's right.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: So, uh, rodeo committee. You, you've probably been part of the-

Becky Giacomini: Um

Scott Hammond: … how many? 110 rodeos?

Becky Giacomini: A hundred, yeah. Did, what year is it? I don't know. It's 104 this year.

Becky Giacomini: I th-

Scott Hammond: It's a lot

Becky Giacomini: … five or whatever.

Scott Hammond: You just had your 100th, right?

Becky Giacomini: Yep, yep. So I think we're up to that. But Walt, uh, competed not all those years-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … but it seemed like it, but, you know.

Scott Hammond: Is he on the, the, the chair or the, the committee with-

Becky Giacomini: No, he's not on the committee. He was a participant.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: But, you know, you show up, and, you know.

Scott Hammond: Help out.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Whatever. But no, they have a very strong rodeo board.

Scott Hammond: Oh, yeah.

Becky Giacomini: And, um, they've been doing it for years, and, and, uh, and now obviously it's a week-long event.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: So it's not just the rodeo on-

Scott Hammond: All the stuff

Becky Giacomini: … Saturday and Sunday.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. It's now, it's Friday night. Now they've added a concert and… But they've rolled with the years and, and as you should-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … and added some things, took some things away, but yeah.

Scott Hammond: Do you see me smiling right now?

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: I, I have the rancher's name at my Swiss Hall.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, hurry. Tell me before you forget it again.

Scott Hammond: I won't forget. Wait. What is it?

Scott Hammond: Kurt. Kurt-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, Holgerson

Scott Hammond: … Holgerson.

Becky Giacomini: Yes.

Scott Hammond: What a sweetheart.

Becky Giacomini: Yes. Yeah. His, their kids are great. They're all, yeah. In fact, some of their kids grad-

Scott Hammond: Teresa

Becky Giacomini: … yeah.

Scott Hammond: Hi, Teresa.

Becky Giacomini: Hi. Oh, yes.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Teresa's our good friend.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: She lives up the street from us on Dow's Prairie.

Becky Giacomini: Okay.

Scott Hammond: Which is in McKinleyville, which is in California.

Becky Giacomini: Is it still on that map, or is it off that map?

Scott Hammond: Thought you'd never ask.

Becky Giacomini: Uh-huh.

Scott Hammond: It's, it's…

Becky Giacomini: Where is it?

Scott Hammond: It's to the north of Eureka and Arcata.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, but it's very nice, but it's a long ways from Rio Dell

Becky Giacomini: to say.

Scott Hammond: It's a heck of a long ways from Re- well-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … I mean-

Becky Giacomini: I mean

Scott Hammond: … if we're in LA, this is not a big drive. 55 minutes would be a commute.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, that would, but the, yeah.

Scott Hammond: That's straight driving. It's not even in traffic.

Becky Giacomini: No, it, most of the time. Just-

Scott Hammond: Well, unless you're in the lights in Eureka.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Let's get started on that.

Becky Giacomini: Let's not.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Becky Giacomini: Because you might w- not wanna hear what I have to say.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. Okay. Fair enough.

Becky Giacomini: Fair enough. Okay.

Scott Hammond: So, uh-

Becky Giacomini: Hi, Teresa

Scott Hammond: … are, are you in the Farm Bureau?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, we are members. Yes.

Scott Hammond: Members? Okay.

Becky Giacomini: Yes. So we participate. I, I'm still very involved with Cattle Women, who is kind of a arm of Farm Bureau-

Scott Hammond: All right

Becky Giacomini: … which we do things. Yes.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm. You guys are big.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. You know, Cattle Women, well, my husband was president of Cattle Men-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … way back when.

Scott Hammond: Is that with Larry Ford and all the guys from the market?

Becky Giacomini: All the guys. Yeah. Cattle Men is all, you know, uh- Humboldt, but you know, it, you just, all the ranchers kinda take their turn to be president-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … and get the younger ones involved.

Scott Hammond: Were you a Rotarian too?

Becky Giacomini: My husband is.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: So now I'm kind of part of that, but I was Kiwanis for many years.

Scott Hammond: Okay. Cool.

Becky Giacomini: President in Fortuna and so yes.

Scott Hammond: Kiwanis is great.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, it's a great-

Scott Hammond: I like Kiwanis

Becky Giacomini: … organization. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Is there Optimist too? Is there one in-

Becky Giacomini: There is one in Fortuna, but no, I just support them.

Becky Giacomini: But-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Becky Giacomini: … yeah. So Humboldt Sponsors is a huge one that I'm-

Scott Hammond: Yes

Becky Giacomini: … very involved with, so.

Scott Hammond: Tell us about Sponsors. What do they do?

Becky Giacomini: Sponsors, Sponsors is a group of, uh, probably about 40 active

Becky Giacomini: members-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … and, um, total about 400 with associate members.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Becky Giacomini: We raise money and give out grants to, um, everything

Becky Giacomini: kid-wise.

Scott Hammond: Right.

Becky Giacomini: Camperships, playground equipment, all, all sorts of things. And so the grant period is right now.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: So last year we gave out 102,000, and we have ov- went over 3 million-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Becky Giacomini: … for all the years we've been doing it, so.

Scott Hammond: Wow.

Becky Giacomini: Just a small group of ladies.

Scott Hammond: And then there's the big, is it the McLean, McLean-

Becky Giacomini: McLean Foundation

Scott Hammond: … McLean. McLean?

Becky Giacomini: McLean.

Scott Hammond: Uh, and it, they're in Fortuna.

Becky Giacomini: They are in Fortuna.

Scott Hammond: Was that a branching family or are they just a-

Becky Giacomini: No, um-

Scott Hammond: … giant foundation?

Becky Giacomini: They, um, Mr. McLean, Grace and Mel owned, uh, Eel

Becky Giacomini: River, um,

Becky Giacomini: logging.

Scott Hammond: Okay.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. So they had that and that's-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Becky Giacomini: … yeah. No children, so they wanted to give back to the community-

Scott Hammond: Beautiful

Becky Giacomini: … and start a foundation.

Scott Hammond: Wow. Did you know the PL folks too?

Becky Giacomini: Um, yeah.

Scott Hammond: What's their last name?

Becky Giacomini: Well, we had the Murphys.

Scott Hammond: Murphys.

Becky Giacomini: Yes. And the Campbells and-

Scott Hammond: Right

Becky Giacomini: … yep, so.

Scott Hammond: Murphys.

Becky Giacomini: Murphy. Yep.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. So they were all-

Scott Hammond: Legend

Becky Giacomini: … legend.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. The whole Palco thing was a legend, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Sustainable lumber town. Could you imagine?

Becky Giacomini: I can't imagine.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: But hearing the stories, it's kinda cool.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: It's sad to see the kinda the, the way things go, but that's-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, that's kinda history. That's, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Welcome to America-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Hello

Scott Hammond: … and capitalism and how it-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … you could play by the rules and still…

Scott Hammond: Anyway.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Another story.

Becky Giacomini: Another story.

Scott Hammond: Another story for another day.

Becky Giacomini: Yes.

Scott Hammond: You know what I don't like?

Becky Giacomini: Do tell. I can tell you're gonna tell me.

Scott Hammond: I have a like, I must be getting old 'cause I have a list of things I don't like.

Becky Giacomini: Oh.

Scott Hammond: But one thing I don't like is people that show up at meetings and get heard, and then won't sit down after they got heard.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: And then get voted down, and then are still not heard and still wanna be heard. So you've been heard.

Scott Hammond: Take a seat.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: You're, it's good. We'll-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … we'll move on.

Becky Giacomini: Thank you for your comments.

Scott Hammond: It's, the d- democracy continues and everybody had a voice, and the board voted and, um, you won-

Scott Hammond: … because you got to talk-

Becky Giacomini: That's true

Scott Hammond: … and participate. And we supported you.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, we did.

Scott Hammond: I, I don't know where I came up with that one, but.

Becky Giacomini: I don't know. Something must be, mm, buzzing.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. You know, I think there's some things that bug us once in a while, and it's okay to vent them-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … and, and maybe… Maybe I should do this at home with Joni.

Becky Giacomini: You're, at least you're sitting down and not standing up.

Scott Hammond: Well, let me tell you one more I got, curmudgeon. No, I'm kidding.

Becky Giacomini: That's all right. It's nice to have thoughts.

Scott Hammond: Tell us, tell us more about Women in Wellness. We, uh, it's kind of… I, I know that it's special. I don't know if it's… I perceive it might be a little bit super special for you, but I know you're very involved. Joni's involved. And what, what do the Women in Wellness do as part of St. Joseph Providence?

Becky Giacomini: So what it started, I don't know, three or four years ago, just in, um, starting it with just kind of a thought. Somebody, um, heard that they had done something like this at the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … and, um, started it, and we came up with our name, Women for Wellness.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And it's a group of ladies. Um, gentlemen can join too.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: So you join, um, and-

Scott Hammond: There's guys? There's dudes?

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, I think-

Scott Hammond: I mean, I've-

Becky Giacomini: … we have a couple

Scott Hammond: … I've come to a couple functions, but I didn't join.

Becky Giacomini: Well, you could join. We'll take your money.

Scott Hammond: Do I get the Holly Yashi earrings?

Becky Giacomini: No, no earrings. We'll put one in your nose, but… Oh, that's very nice.

Scott Hammond: I'm thinking about it.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, God. Ugh. Um-

Scott Hammond: It's Humboldt, man. You can get away with it.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, I know. It's a wonderful, uh, thought that we're, everyone donates $1,000 for the year.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: That money is pooled, and then the, the members get to decide how that money is spent.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And it is, uh, for the hospitals, both St. Joe's and Redwood.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And, um, so we find projects or capital items that are needed i- in each different, uh, department, and, um, we fund those things.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: So a lot, most of the times it's, um, equipment, sometimes it's

Becky Giacomini: education. Um, and then we have, through the year we have, um, socials with, um, education wrapped into it for-

Scott Hammond: All right

Becky Giacomini: … learning about health-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … for women and what's, what, what's happening in our community that, you know, women need to know about or what kind of questions do you have-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … on health issues.

Scott Hammond: I think it's a super cool network.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, it is. It is. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And Erin, is Erin still involved?

Becky Giacomini: Uh-huh.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, Erin.

Scott Hammond: Erin.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Hi, Erin.

Becky Giacomini: Hi, Erin.

Scott Hammond: She's super-duper.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. No, she's taken it and run with it, so it's great.

Scott Hammond: And you guys just throw really nice get-togethers. It's not the usual-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, it's just-

Scott Hammond: … let's go to Blue Lake or some tent and have an

Scott Hammond: auction and-

Becky Giacomini: No, this-

Scott Hammond: Hey, Rex, love you, but I've…

Scott Hammond: How many-

Becky Giacomini: We've done that

Scott Hammond: … how many Rex auctions have you been through personally?

Becky Giacomini: Many.

Scott Hammond: Many.

Becky Giacomini: Many, many. As my husband says, "Have we done this this week?"

Scott Hammond: Right.

Becky Giacomini: I mean, there's, there's many, but as, there again, the community comes together and

Becky Giacomini: it just-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … always amazes me.

Scott Hammond: I like yours 'cause you guys have had a creative angle at the fundraiser, and I'm sure you've done the Rex auction-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … and the, the for, the silent auction, and all the dinner and the-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, yeah

Scott Hammond: … the tri-tip and it's-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … it's great. We all wanna help and support.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: But you guys, you know, you did the one out at the, uh, botanical

Scott Hammond: gardens.

Becky Giacomini: Yes.

Scott Hammond: Pretty-

Becky Giacomini: That was-

Scott Hammond: Pretty dang cool

Becky Giacomini: … that was very fun with, with education wrapped around a beautiful area-

Scott Hammond: And some booths

Becky Giacomini: … and a little social. Yep.

Scott Hammond: And go, go talk to people and meet.

Becky Giacomini: Yep.

Scott Hammond: Rub elbows.

Becky Giacomini: Yep, yep.

Scott Hammond: So I wanna get to the core of who you are real quick, if I may.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, you may.

Scott Hammond: With your permission.

Becky Giacomini: Oh. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: So I get, I get the fact that you, you serve and you support.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: What drives that? What do you, what do you think-

Becky Giacomini: I like her

Scott Hammond: … the top three things that, that give you the love and the time and the resource and the, the grace to go out and, and pour out your life for people?

Becky Giacomini: I think about it a lot 'cause people comment on the many things that I do, which, you know, I, I love all the things I do. If I didn't, I, you know, would step back.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: But I think it's just a kind of a great feeling to be able to

Becky Giacomini: serve and-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Becky Giacomini: … and enjoy. I'm, I'm very social. I love being around people.

Scott Hammond: Mm.

Becky Giacomini: I like all the different aspects of any group I'm with.

Scott Hammond: So it's energizing for you.

Becky Giacomini: It is energizing.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And, um, you know, it's kinda, you just never know who you're gonna meet-

Scott Hammond: Right

Becky Giacomini: … what kind of a, a atmosphere it's gonna be, and yeah, I always look for that. I don't wanna turn down things 'cause, you know, you might miss something, might miss meeting somebody-

Scott Hammond: Right

Becky Giacomini: … that, you know. It-

Scott Hammond: FOMO, fear of missing out.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yeah. My kids say that all the time.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. You didn't go to that thing. It was amazing.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: The one concert we didn't go to, Bruce Cockburn downtown.

Becky Giacomini: Oh.

Scott Hammond: It was amazing. They said he… Jenny Scheenman played, and it was-

Becky Giacomini: All that

Scott Hammond: … it was the whole thing, and it's like-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … "Ah, crap, FOMO."

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, I know.

Scott Hammond: Ah.

Becky Giacomini: Well, my call… My kids like to say JOMO, joy of missing out.

Scott Hammond: The joy of missing out.

Becky Giacomini: They're not like me.

Scott Hammond: So they're reclusive. Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Not too bad, but they're… They look at me as, you know.

Scott Hammond: The joy of missing out.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, I know. That's a new one, right?

Scott Hammond: Whoa. I think Joni's gonna use that one on me.

Becky Giacomini: I have stepped back a bit, but you know-

Scott Hammond: Sure

Becky Giacomini: … you never know. It's fun.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. So Joni and I step back. Uh, we call it quiet night in.

Becky Giacomini: Oh. Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: It involves cozies, which is sweats-

Becky Giacomini: Yep. Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … and just sloppy-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … hoodies. It involves delicious salad-

Becky Giacomini: Okay

Scott Hammond: … and, uh, kicking back in the living room-

Becky Giacomini: Mm

Scott Hammond: … and senior Citizen TV programming.

Becky Giacomini: Whoa. Senior c- mm.

Scott Hammond: And it's quiet at our house.

Becky Giacomini: Yep.

Scott Hammond: And it's kinda like, oh, we're not doing… It's t- what'd you call JOMO?

Becky Giacomini: Joy of missing out.

Scott Hammond: Uh, that's a new one. I'm gonna… Can I, can I coin that one?

Becky Giacomini: Oh, you so can.

Scott Hammond: I like that.

Becky Giacomini: Yes.

Scott Hammond: That's a good one. So, um, you love connecting with people. You're a connector.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Uh-

Becky Giacomini: I missed, uh, you know, I… At, at work, you know, you're around a lot of people-

Scott Hammond: Mm

Becky Giacomini: … and, and it's constant. It's go, go, go, and it's-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … every day is different. I, I guess I miss that with retiring, but-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … um, I still was active then, but I-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … you know, just kinda switched gears as, you know-

Scott Hammond: Right

Becky Giacomini: … took on a couple other things, let some things go, but-

Scott Hammond: I love it.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: Good on you, man.

Becky Giacomini: It's all good. Yeah, it's all good.

Scott Hammond: What else drives that? Anything else?

Becky Giacomini: I think it must be, um-

Scott Hammond: This is like our therapy session part.

Becky Giacomini: I know. It is. I'm been think- you know, I was, I was at home today. I saw a picture of my dad m- on a picture frame, and, and he was like me, you know, loved the social.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: He was, um, in… He was the mayor of our town, and, and he was-

Scott Hammond: Wow

Becky Giacomini: … a fundraiser, and I'm thinking, "Mm.

Becky Giacomini: Mm."

Scott Hammond: What was his name?

Becky Giacomini: Ken. Ken Beyer.

Scott Hammond: Everybody knew Ken.

Becky Giacomini: Everybody knew Ken.

Scott Hammond: Ken from Claremont.

Becky Giacomini: Yes, Ken from Claremont. Yes.

Scott Hammond: That's cool.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, so.

Scott Hammond: So this is, like, '60s?

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, it was.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Growing up in the '60s.

Scott Hammond: So it was a small enough community you could be.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: It wasn't LA like we-

Becky Giacomini: No

Scott Hammond: … know it today.

Becky Giacomini: Definitely not.

Scott Hammond: Could-

Becky Giacomini: Great community to grow up

Scott Hammond: … could do that quite today probably.

Becky Giacomini: Probably not. No.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Don't think so.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Which is okay. Those were good years.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Kind of interesting years.

Scott Hammond: And I've learned to respect that, that I'm outgoing. I wanna go to the bougie club and hang out and say hi and high five

Scott Hammond: 'cause-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … FOMO.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, yeah.

Scott Hammond: And Joni's very content going, "You know what? If it's just the four of us having dinner somewhere at somebody's house

Scott Hammond: or not-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … uh, it's all good." You know?

Becky Giacomini: That's Walt too.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Small groups.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Small groups. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: It's good. I, I res- I'm, I'm learning to respect that.

Scott Hammond: They-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … the, the, the weirdos are, are… I respect them.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, me too. I've learned after all these years, you know, it's, uh-

Scott Hammond: And they think we're the weirdos.

Becky Giacomini: I know. That's all right. He's, he's stuck-

Scott Hammond: JOMOs and FOMOs.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. He's, he's stuck with me all these years, and he just kinda go, "You, you go. It's fine."

Scott Hammond: Yeah. That's fine. We call that divide and conquer.

Becky Giacomini: Ah, true, true.

Scott Hammond: Yeah. And we had to do that a lot with nine kids-

Becky Giacomini: Oh, yeah

Scott Hammond: … so we got to-

Becky Giacomini: Okay, yeah

Scott Hammond: … do a lot of dividing, a lot of conquering-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … separately, which is-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Maybe juggle. You figured that out

Scott Hammond: … could do it. I don't, I don't wanna do that anymore. I don't have to do that anymore.

Becky Giacomini: You don't have to do that, yeah.

Scott Hammond: So that's the beauty of retirement.

Scott Hammond: Uh-

Becky Giacomini: Very true

Scott Hammond: … I call it next season. My business coach, "Hey, we're going into next season."

Becky Giacomini: Next season? Oh.

Scott Hammond: So retirement, not really… Uh, I, I don't… Retirement is like, "Are you going to golf now five days a week, Scott?" Like, hell no. You know, "Are you going over the hill and pasture with the other- … people and…"

Becky Giacomini: No. You pick and choose.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: And so, yeah. And I think there's… You, you do pick and choose, and that's legit.

Becky Giacomini: It is.

Scott Hammond: So, uh, last question of the day.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, here it comes. And?

Scott Hammond: Your legacy.

Becky Giacomini: Oof.

Scott Hammond: What, what are we gonna say at your, uh-

Becky Giacomini: Hmm

Scott Hammond: … your celebration of life-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … Becky Giacomini?

Becky Giacomini: Ooh.

Scott Hammond: What, what little quote is on your tombstone-

Becky Giacomini: Hmm

Scott Hammond: … maybe that would, would resonate with you?

Becky Giacomini: I showed up.

Scott Hammond: Ooh.

Becky Giacomini: Um, I think it… And I've heard that from other… A- and I just think it's important.

Becky Giacomini: If-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … if you take something on, you show up.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm.

Becky Giacomini: And you, you know, do what you can and enjoy it and, um, know that, uh, you did the best you can, and, but show up. It shows, you know, you're connected.

Scott Hammond: I love it. Showing up, man.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: Um, Joni's dad lived in Torrance in LA.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: My dad lived in Oceanside and then-

Becky Giacomini: Mm

Scott Hammond: … in Seattle later, but both of those guys showed up, and it, and there is something to the showing up of the act of showing up.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm. Exactly.

Scott Hammond: I mean, you gotta talk.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, you, yeah, you gotta be there, but yeah.

Scott Hammond: You wanna shake a hand- … high five somebody and, um, be pleasant. But I think that support of just, uh, Joni's dad put it well. He goes, "You know, I, I show up for these events, these occa-" My dad called them nice occasions.

Becky Giacomini: Nice occasions. Oh, that's a good one.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Homeschool graduation, Rohnert Park, and… It's Rohnert Park.

Becky Giacomini: Rohnert.

Scott Hammond: Rohnert is a town-

Becky Giacomini: Yes

Scott Hammond: … which is south of there.

Becky Giacomini: Yes. Way south.

Scott Hammond: But Rohnert Park sits in Fortuna, which is right there.

Becky Giacomini: Yes. Right there.

Scott Hammond: And so he would come to these gra- little homeschool graduations that they would do.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: And, um, s- both of them. And they would just take joy in being part of

Scott Hammond: that-

Becky Giacomini: Yes

Scott Hammond: … that piece. And, and it's funny how, um, we remember

Scott Hammond: those-

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm

Scott Hammond: … that come and show up and support.

Becky Giacomini: Mm-hmm.

Scott Hammond: And are legitimately and genuinely there to be there-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … and to love and support.

Becky Giacomini: Exactly.

Scott Hammond: And kindness and, um, I expect some grace and some faith are behind what you do, too.

Scott Hammond: It's the-

Becky Giacomini: Probably

Scott Hammond: … that kind of, that love thing.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, I love that.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Good on you.

Becky Giacomini: Well, thanks.

Scott Hammond: So, uh, what, what are we gonna say at… So you, you showed up on the tombstone.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: What else do we want us to, what, what

Becky Giacomini: What else?

Scott Hammond: Can you prompt us to what to say at your funeral?

Becky Giacomini: Is it coming soon?

Scott Hammond: No. Hopefully not.

Becky Giacomini: Hopefully not. Oh, gosh, I don't know. Um, yeah, she loved well.

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm. Good.

Becky Giacomini: Showed up and loved well.

Scott Hammond: I love it. I love it.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah, I think showing up is really big. Showing up is key.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Um, anything you wanna add?

Becky Giacomini: No, but this was very fun and, uh, you know, Humboldt's a great place to raise kids-

Scott Hammond: Mm-hmm

Becky Giacomini: … and, and live, and there's always something, and it's, uh-

Scott Hammond: Yeah

Becky Giacomini: … yeah, it's good.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Evel's gonna-

Scott Hammond: And for all the downside, the, the upside are the people.

Becky Giacomini: Yes.

Scott Hammond: Like you and I.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Yay.

Scott Hammond: And, um, and Nick. Hey, Nick, what's up?

Becky Giacomini: Is he still there? Oh, I hear a phone.

Scott Hammond: I hear a… Oh, there he is.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, there he is.

Scott Hammond: And then, um, and then the natural beauty.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah. Oh, exactly. I mean, it's… What a place.

Scott Hammond: Somebody said the original God's country.

Becky Giacomini: Mm.

Scott Hammond: Not God's country. Orig-

Becky Giacomini: Origin-

Scott Hammond: The O-

Becky Giacomini: OG

Scott Hammond: … that's O- OG.

Becky Giacomini: Oh, really the OG.

Scott Hammond: That's another one. I got JOMO, now we got OG. OG God's country. I, I love it.

Becky Giacomini: It's a great one. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: You know, it's like, um-

Becky Giacomini: Wasn't quite sure when I moved up here 55 years ago, but, you know.

Scott Hammond: You're starting to s- settle in a little bit.

Becky Giacomini: Uh, I think so, finally. Yeah.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: It took a while.

Scott Hammond: It takes a minute.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah, it took-

Scott Hammond: Acquired taste

Becky Giacomini: … just a minute. Mm.

Scott Hammond: I think we discovered it during COVID.

Scott Hammond: We just-

Becky Giacomini: Ah, yeah

Scott Hammond: … would go to a scenic drive by Camel Rock in Cl-

Becky Giacomini: Yes

Scott Hammond: … in Tr- Trinidad and pull the van up.

Becky Giacomini: Yep.

Scott Hammond: Bring out the Dick Taylor chocolate.

Becky Giacomini: Yep.

Scott Hammond: Perhaps, uh, some adult beverage.

Becky Giacomini: Bever- yes.

Scott Hammond: And just-

Becky Giacomini: I'm so glad-

Scott Hammond: … watch the ocean

Becky Giacomini: … I lived here during those years.

Scott Hammond: Oh my gosh. And-

Becky Giacomini: And we were-

Scott Hammond: … the sun would set, and it-

Becky Giacomini: Yeah

Scott Hammond: … it would refract off the, the ocean.

Becky Giacomini: Oh.

Scott Hammond: It would be about 70 degrees.

Becky Giacomini: Yeah.

Scott Hammond: This is crazy. And then it would go down, and it would, and then it would snow.

Scott Hammond: You know?

Becky Giacomini: That's Humboldt.

Scott Hammond: That's it.

Becky Giacomini: Wait five minutes.

Scott Hammond: You l- have your layers.

Becky Giacomini: Many layers.

Scott Hammond: Uh, what a pleasure having you.

Becky Giacomini: Well, thank you.

Scott Hammond: Yeah.

Becky Giacomini: Thanks for asking.

Scott Hammond: Appreciate you.

Becky Giacomini: This was fun.
